Title: Hibernation
Post by: honeybun on December 07, 2014, 03:52:21 PM
Is it just me or does anyone else feel very tempted to hibernate for the winter.

It's so dull and cold and wet, I just want to stay indoors. I have absolutely no inclination to go out at all. I really have to force myself to do anything that involves putting my foot over the doorstep. I have done the majority of my Xmas shopping online as I just can't be bothered.

I love been outside in nice weather but at the moment the urge to curl up and snooze the winter away is very appealing.

How do you get the energy to do anything in the winter ?.

Taz, this does not apply to you.  ;D

I know what you mean HB.
I'd rather be indoors with the lights on and my LED candles flickering away. :o
It's much brighter in than out. 8)
You only have to look outside on a dull and dreary day and it makes you feel depressed. :(
Well, it does me anyway  ;)

Certainly I was getting fed up with the constant dull damp air ……. we had break yesterday with very sharp frost, blue skies and sunshine.  Today; dull again.

I want to hibernate in order to avoid C.mas  :-\

I think it's got something to do with lack of natural daylight. Even my dog semi hibernates at this time of year.

Some people buy daylight lamps, I know a couple of ladies who have one because they get depressed in the winter.

I'm glad you said that it doesn't apply to me honeybun. I'm beginning to get that panicky feeling now as the shortest day approaches! I feel so alive at this time of year but just want it to last forever. I get a bit annoyed that Christmas is during the winter and takes up a lot of my winter time where I could be just drinking in all of the winter atmosphere - short dark days - lovely!

I have to go out every day for exercise and fresh air, come evening and I like to feel cosy don't want to be anywhere else but at home especially in the Winter.

I tend to go out much more in the winter than in the summer. Hate the brightness of the sunshine and want to squirrel myself away indoors. In the winter I just love the sights and sounds - the trees all bare showing off their shapes - the smell of the leaves or just the winter smell. I also love the fact that I can go out for a walk and not feel too hot. Best of all is the way the dusk falls and everything is hushed up apart from the robin singing his last song of the day. Everything seems to be holding it's breath and suspended somehow.

CLKD, hubby has TV on, but he's playing patience on his tablet. I've given up moaning about it so thought I'd amuse myself!  ;D

Maybe it's different down south Taz but here on the Scottish West Coast it's dull and dank. Either that or it would blow you off your feet.
Today we have had such low light levels my lamps have been lit all day. Can't remember when I last saw a blue sky.
I love my coastline but when it's gun metal grey and roaring waves all the time I just want to curl up indoors and ignore the world until the milder days arrive.
We are forecast sleet and snow tonight and gale force winds by Wednesday.

I still want to be a door mouse and hide myself away till spring.

Yep dull and dark and dank with the little indoor lights on. Can't explain it but I just feel right in that sort of weather. At work last week I watched the rain sweeping across the farmland towards the school and I just felt at home. Don't worry - it will soon be summer again honeyb.

Any ideas?

Stokes up the fire  :whist:  in the 'wild' we would rise with the sun and go to bed at dusk regardless of time of year …….. more 'natural' then trying to keep time with the alarm clock!  However, I'm glad we've moved out of the cave   ::) ………

Interesting thoughts...

It's not dull and grey here - I live for the bright crisp winter days - today was one such - well not quite winter yet. Beautiful sunshine and light, and amazing colours of the leaves. Wild branches waving in the wind. Also lucky to live not far from the sea - 20 mins drive so the waves and storms are fantastic - bound to make you feel good. I love the summer too and get excited when the year turns, (winter solstice - sorry Taz!)  but then I like all the turns of the seasons. To me there is something about each time of year that appeals so you just have to look for it. OK I am really tired a lot of the time now but it doesn't mean I want to hibernate!

Honeybun yes you live by the sea - but I think it's probably to do with your situation more than the time of year - I think the greyness and cold can make one less able to deal with life's problems. Also you mention the low light - I've just looked it up and for those in Scotland your day in Glasgow is nearly an hour shorter than mine near Exeter!  it;s also much colder! No wonder you want to hibernate!

Glasgow sunrise: 8.33
sunset 3.44

Exeter sunrise 8.02
sunset 4.09

That's it - I'm moving!! Actually I've noticed that on the Woolacombe webcam. Much lighter there than here in the late afternoon.

Ah yes - I constantly have this conversation with my friend who lives in The Orkneys. She says it is ideal for me in the winter but in the summer I would have to move back down south.

I have always felt the same in the winter so can't really blame my circumstances at all.

Yes we have short days but it's the constant grey skies and grey water and just grey everything that pulls you down.

Wishing for some winter sunshine but not holding my breath  ::)

I have to do at least a couple of organ practices a week at the church, on top of my home practising.  At this time of the year, in between services, it can get absolutely icy in the church because it's a high, stone building.  A wall of cold can hit you when you open the door into the church, from the corridor.  I have been known to sit at the organ dressed like the Michelin (wo)man and on one occasion, I remember having to stop after an hour because I thought I was going to freeze over (and that's with my blow-heater on beside me)!  These are the times I envy those little hibernating doormice.................... :)
