Title: Vagifem tablets with applicator
Post by: jgr on November 23, 2014, 07:07:14 PM
Hi ladies, it's the dreaded smear time again and after a painful one three years ago the nurse told me to get something to make it more comfortable this time.
She has put a prescription in for me and this is Vagifem. The pill is at the top of an applicator and this has to be inserted into the vagina (sorry for TMI), i don't really fancy this but i know i need to do something. Have any of you ladies tried this, how easy is it to use and did it result in a better smear ?

Hi jgr

I can't help with using this only for a smear - but how long is it until your smear is due?

The idea with vagifem is that it plumps up the vaginal tissues so that they are not so thin and therefore less liable to bruising and tearing if something is inserted.

However since it is a treatment for vaginal atrophy it works by using daily for 14 days (to plump up the tissues initially) and then twice daily thereafter. Most women who embark on this treatment continue with it indefinitely because the tissues benefit from local oestrogen to keep them plumped up. Without they will revert to their original state ie thin....

I would make sure your smear date is at least a fortnight from when you start using it.

Hope this helps

Thanks Hurdity, I have to use it for 4 weeks and then make my appointment which is a little bit overdue.
