Much to my surprise hubby has said he'd quite like one of these for our Christmas meal. Can anyone recommend any? I checked out stresscos today, but theirs have milk products.

Go to your local butcher of farm shop. Ours does lots of combinations at this time of year - support local!
-
Not sure I understand CG.
Are you talking about a bird in a bird in a bird.
Probably just being thick ::)

I haven't tried one myself but a colleague recommended the Lidl 3 bird roast which she has served 2 Xmas's running

Delicious :P
Local butcher - ours will do whatever combination one asks for (within reason!) but did caution again including goose as he said it can make the whole thing rather greasy. You could be assured of what goes into it and that it won't contain milk products.

HB, yes bird within bird, within bird. They showed an M&S one on their Christmas ad, but think it's about £40 & is sure to have butter in it at least. Not paying £40 for just the two of us. Lidl sounds more like it. I suggested butcher to himself, but he doesn't want me going to a lot if bother getting one. He just thought it would be nice for a change. We used to buy turkey, but neither of us that keen on turkey so in recent years I've bought a good quality chicken.

They are brilliant , highly recommend them, look online and they will deliver to your door,

You can do your own. Go to the supermarket with an 'M' in the title as they often have breasts/legs of various birds. You can then layer it as you like: pheasant on the bottom + a layer of potatoes + another bird + a layer of carrots + another bird + parsnips …… cooked in foil slowly and basted a few times ;)
-
I haven't tried it myself but the Aldi one is supposed to be good too :)

DH says to give your local butcher plenty of time as each bird has to be boned out - messy and time consuming but worth while!
Pheasant
Partridge
Pigeon
Turkey
Quail
Venison is also a good change - fat free but is an acquired taste
Served with mash: roasts: parsnips and carrots: frozen peas ………
-
Oh a nice bit of venison. Hadn't thought of that. Mmmmm
-
Whoops ;D now you have choice ………..

Yep! We once had fresh venison roast at an hotel in Perthshire. It was to die for! So juicy & succulent! It had no doubt been running about the local woods a few days before, but have never tasted venison like it since.
-
Well, not a few days before because venison has to be culled and hung - there are plenty of web-sites for deer farms etc., we have 3 near us ::) and if one is feeding a large number, reindeer is also for sale. Plus the skins for throws/rugs …….
Venison needs to be cooked slowly ;)
-
Stewing venison needs slow cooking but a steak or loin which is good for two is a quick cook. It should be pink in the middle otherwise it's as tough as old boots.
If you have a good game butcher then he will keep you right.
I think your bird in a bird in a bird ;D would be too big for two to be honest. You could have a different mixture though. A duck breast and a pheasant makes a good combination.

The trick is to match pheasant - which can cook dry - with something succulent ;) - perhaps practice before the Big Day?
-
Will need to check butchers in town, local one just stocks the usual stuff. Thanks for the idea though.

Let us know how you get on!

Our butcher has a list of things you can order for the day, with prices, and that includes mutiple bird things, stuffed things and deboned turkey things.
My dad swears by the Aldi one. We had it once at his, and it was nice, but I am not sure I would go for it for Christmas, unless I was trying to do an easy Christmas. We usually have a duck from the butcher.
