Title: Hot flushes/sweating getting worse before getting better?
Post by: Liz on October 02, 2014, 08:47:08 PM
Is this possible?  Had quite a few flushes this morning and was boiling in bed last night (more so than before I started the patches 5 days ago)  Just wondering if anyone found they got worse before they started to get better?

Sorry to read this Liz. I must admit that my flushes have always disappeared within twenty four hours of putting the patch on but maybe someone else will be along soon who has suffered the same. What type of patch are you on and is it well stuck down?

Hi Taz - I'm on the Estradot 50 and yes, this patch is staying stuck down much better as I didn't put it on directly after a shower and changed it in the middle of the day instead.  I do feel much brighter mood-wise though, just still feeling "hot".

Today has been particularly hot and humid - I'd see how you feel in a weeks time when the oestrogen level has built up a bit.  We are all different and our response to HRT can be different.  It's still very early days Liz.  You oestrogen levels may have been very low so it may take a bit more time to get relief.

Thanks DG, actually had a better night and felt less hot, so fingers crossed, although woke up with a bit of a sore throat so perhaps I've got a bit of a virus anyway.

Lots of viruses about at the moment so you may have been coming down with this and it would explain how you have been feeling. Get better soon.  DG x

Thanks DG!  Funnily enough was speaking to a colleague this morning who is against HRT and told me it increases my risk of cancer and that I should come off it straightaway.  This was coming from someone who proceeded to go out for her "fag break" and has been smoking for years..... ::)

Hi Liz

I'm still chortling about your friend that smokes.
Just curious but has she got to the age that needs HRT anyway?

Same would apply if she said the same after a late night in the pub  ;D

Both are far more risky to our health.

My docs are the same, not once have they said anything about my penchant for wine (no interest at all).
But each time I go in I'm fed the rubbish scare story guilt trip they like to rollout for HRT.
I guess they don't have to pay for my wine, however HRT costs them around 30p per day ???

I think I'll get the last laugh though when it comes to my docs.
Can't wait to see them deal with patients whilst in the midst of sweat and flush :)

Does anyone remember all the scares about The Pill that resulted in so many women coming off the contraceptive pill and then loads of unwanted pregnancies? The increase in abortions quickly made everyone sit up and rethink things.
There is now so much evidence of the benefits of HRT with relatively small risks, I hope we will soon see a day when women are actually encouraged to use some HRT for a few years to prevent bone loss and heart disease in the long term.
I am personally fed up of women who sail through their menopause with barely a flush and then patronisingly declare we should do things "the natural way".  :bang:
That's my rant to the day!!!  DG x

Agreed both of you!  The colleague is over 60 and yes, you've guessed it, did it "naturally"..... mind you, is "naturally" meaning the use of cigarettes and booze, I wonder??

Me?  I promptly told her that I am teetotal and have never touched a cigarette in my life, so perhaps my risk is lower than average then??

She also said she had a hysterectomy during her 30s, so I am wondering why she never used oestrogen then?  Hey ho!  Not going to worry about this, got enough on my plate with this meno lark!

Having said that, feeling even better today mood-wise.  Much chirpier and relaxed.... bit warm but then again, it has been a very warm day.  Onwards and upwards, I'm hoping!  :)

These last few posts have made me laugh!

Maybe your smoking friend kept her ovaries though Liz and wouldn't have needed any HRT?

As for cancer risk HRT and wine. When I was trying to persuade my doc to continue to prescribe me HRT over the age of 60 I offered to give up my nightly glass of wine (puts me up to the 14 units I know) she laughed and said she couldn't see that happening -we do see each other in the pub sometimes. Her medical advice is to give up alcohol if you are on HRT but it's not something she expects anyone to take notice of!

Oh dear - I've been doing it wrong all these years - well I have cut down alcohol somewhat but only because it affects me more now!

Wouldn't life be boring if we did what we were told all the time!!!

Indeed it would, ladies!  I don't partake in the vino myself, or the ciggies, but I do like a nightly indulgence of Maltesers! ;)

Hi Liz
Im on day 6 of the patches and feel that the flushes are getting worse rather than better, I've had a few really bad days of flushes and feeling exhausted, I even went to bed this afternoon!
I think maybe my oestrogen levels have been non existent so it's taking time for the patches to kick in.

Hi WA!  Yes, I definitely felt that a few days ago and must admit, do feel very "flushy" this morning.  I'm on day 7 today, so perhaps like you said, it's going to take a week or so to build up?  Mind you, it has been very warm here anyway, especially at night.  Weather is meant to get cooler now, so perhaps that will help?  Keep in touch re. your progress.
