does anyone else who wears glasses have trouble with them like I do? I envy people who can just pop their glasses on and off they go without thinking any more about it. I am conscious of my glasses all day from morning until night both from the nose pads and behind my ears.
I have learned from my optician that there are a proportion of glasses wearers who are oversensitive to the sensation of glasses on their face/head and I think I must be one of these, but it has got much worse since I was menopausal almost to the point of a bit OCD about whether they are sitting right/straight and I am constantly checking them in mirrors, car windows etc and fidgeting with them.
Is anyone else as sad and bonkers as I am ::)
I have tried contacts 3 times and found them even worse. I have very poor tolerance for any sort of discomfort :(

Hello Babyjane, I hate my glasses, I've had them since I was 10, at 21 I went over to contacts had them for years hard, soft, gas perms, all of them caused problems and I finally threw in the towel 4 yrs ago. I now have varifocals, but I'm forever swapping between the pairs I have, luckily my prescription had hardly changed over the last 6 yrs (blind as a bat) my main prob is ... I hate anything touching my face, couldn't even have the veil over my face going in to my wedding 40 yrs ago, The tops and backs of my ears are very sensitive to the arms, and get very sore, the nose pads dig in to my nose, and I can "smell" the plastic of new ones for weeks and it drives me nuts. I am constantly cleaning them as I can see the frames and "glass" and the marks in it that the makers use for ref. My tolerance of them over my nose has worsened over the last 3 or 4 yrs, it doesn't help that my skin on my nose is so oily since meno struck, use to be really dry. My daughter in law has just had laser surgery as her script was worse than mine, but that is something I could never do... it took ages to even get up the courage to try contacts for the first time. There must be heaps of us out there that can't stand glasses, you're certainly not alone. PS I also hate my short legs, big nose and rubbish teeth.... pre meno they didn't worry me.... Grrr....
-
Babyjane, you are talking about me!!! That is exactly my problem. I absolutely hate my glasses >:( (http://>:()
I too have tried contact lenses with no success. I envy my Son who seems to pop them in and out with ease.
My last prescription (2years ago) was for glasses with 3 levels (the name escapes me - meno brain!) and it took a long time to get used to them. I still have trouble focusing when I walk into a shop while the reacta lite is reducing
Have you ever considered laser eye surgery? I am very interested but such a coward. I worry I will be the one it goes wrong with
I understand completely re your poor tolerance of any discomfort - even labels in my clothes have to be removed before I wear them - especially knickers!! ::) (http://::))
-
varifocals - that's it!! ;D (http://;D)
Thanks Witches Cat x

Oh I sympathise. It's the nose pads which drive me bonkers. Wear for any length of time & I start clawing at my nose. I only wear for close up.
-
I'm okay with the feel of glasses but don't even get me started on varifocals - they make me feel sick and giddy even when I'm sitting still. Walking in them was impossible for me >:(
-
ohhhhhh, whilst I sympathise with your discomfort ladies you have no idea how much better you have made me feel :). I thought I was in a minority of one. I wonder what makes us so hypersensitive.
I couldn't afford laser eye surgery and would be scared of it going wrong. Don't you still need reading glasses after it?
I am 2 weeks in to a new varifocal prescription/frame and they are invading my every waking moment just now. I am ok with varifocals, it just takes me an age to adapt to a new prescription but a new frame and I will fidget for England.
Can anyone tell me if the plastic frames fit better than metal nose pads ones or do they weigh heavy on the bridge of your nose? I am allergic to silicone pads and the vinyl/acetate ones are difficult to get hold of.
-
I hate my glasses. I went from light weight metal frames to trendy plastic ones and they are so heavy.
I know this sounds a bit daft but my distance vision is ok but up close is rubbish....I wish I needed glasses for every thing. Mine are off and on, perched on my head, lost, in my bag, in my pocket, but rarely around when I need them.
I am still wearing my lighter weight ones. I'm not due new glasses until next summer and I can't wait. No trendy ones forme but the nicest light weight ones I can find.
My son wore contacts for years but now has switched back to glasses. He sits,at a computer all day and his eyes hurt with contacts.
This getting older thing sucks.
When I take my glasses of last thing and i shut my eyes I can still "see" my frames.

Well my sunglasses are plastic frames & a whole lot more comfortable than my reading glasses.
I too have to wait until about a year from now to change mine.
-
I've only taken mine off once to clean a non-existent smear while reading this. :o
-
I am very short sighted, must use contact lenses or glasses.
I've had a problem with the eyelid on my right eye for the last few months. This has meant I can only use my lenses for max 6 hours a day, the rest of the time I have to use my glasses.
The latest pair are plastic, were picked for looks, they hurt like b-----y after 3 hours. The trouble is the lenses are too thick for metal frames.
Glasses are easier in the morning, they just hurt so much.
-
Sons GF can only wear contacts on special occasions, as they have damaged her eyes. She has to wear glasses most of the time & she hates glasses.
-
I was going to say it's difficult, but being able to see is quite good. ;D
Glasses are so much quicker but they are awful heavy. ::)
-
I have big red dents in the sides of my nose which can get very sore. It doesn't matter how many times I have my glasses adjusted, its always the same. I hate them slipping as that makes the nose dents worse so I bought some plastic grips that fit on the end of the glasses arms and curve around the back of your ears to keep them in place. They work well but don't stop the nose dents.

thank you thank you to everyone who replied and also for the input about the plastic frames. When my glasses irritate me (probably in about half an hour) I will think of you all and feel a bit better about it
-
I have a small face so they are always slipping down my nose, my long sight is perfect, just the small print is getting more and more blurred, have to use my reading glasses much more often.
I have found that children's glasses fit my face much better then adults.
-
Mine are currently driving me nuts!
-
silverlady I asked about children's frames but was told that the lens size would not be big enough for an effective varifocal. You can apparently get compact varifocals but I was not advised to have them as the reading sections are all much more - well, compacted :)
some of my glasses issues are due to oversensitivity and some to do with being borderline OCD and needing to have everything just so and straight and properly aligned even though my face is not straight and I have one eye socket lower than the other :o ::)
-
Mine too CG >:( (http://>:() I have been out for walk and got a bit warm and sweaty -had to keep adjusting them.
feel better for the walk though :) (http://:))
-
I LOVE mine! OK they sit on my nose skew whiff, the pads don't last 2 mins because reading ones are on/off all day: I lose mine several times a day so have 3/4 pairs …… but we are SO lucky to have access to regular eye tests and the opportunity of buying good quality glasses!
-
CLKD - UR right - But my glasses are very heavy and make me look like Joe 90, except less stylish ;D
-
Who on Earth is Joe 90 ……….
And who exactly made the choice of glasses ……... ;)

That brings back so many memories
-
Joe 90- Sixties science fiction series - Just Google Joe 90, then you will see.
As to who made choice of glasses, well I did ask OH for opinion.........
He favoured the Joe 90 ones, and to be fair, people whose style opinions I respect, have praised them.
I had been quite tempted by a navy blue pair. Anyway, I've got an opticians check on Tuesday. I feel a spare pair of glasses coming on ;D
-
This thread makes me feel very fortunate. I do look better without glasses and tried contact lens at the opticians, for vanity reasons, but couldn't get them in. I wear rimless glasses, varifocals, and tend to forget I am wearing them. I have tried to wash my face with them on, gone into the shower, and gone to bed with them still on!
-
…….. as well as putting 1 pair on over the other ;D
-
Hi sparkle, we sound very similar especially this '(I've got a slightly lop-sided face so it's really noticeable but trying to get them straight is virtually impossible)' but I know that other people don't notice anything amiss because they look at me, not just at my glasses. I am trying to get it in proportion now that I have shared it and received reassuring replies that I am not odd.
I tried rimless ones once but was very conscious of the fittings in my line of vision. I had stepper frames last time and they are also very light but the frame was a bit big for my face. I have had stepper frames again but a better fitting shape and style. I think it is just a matter of getting used to them and not obsessing.
Does anyone else get a headache whilst adjusting to a new prescription, especially a varifocal.
-
I wore contact lenses for years from the age of 18. Hard, gas permeable, dailies.
I have a very bad right eye that needed an implant to bring the sight in line with my left one as it made glasses awkward to wear.
I have now had my eye corrected and tried contacts again but just couldn't get on with them.
I have plastic frames with varifocals and I get on really well with them.
They are light and comfortable. I paid a lot of money to have the best varifocal and I soon got use to them.
There are different grades of varifocal and it depends on what you have as to how you get on with them.
-
Hi Dyan, I too have a more expensive varifocal because it gives me a wider reading channel so I don't have to keep turning my head when I read. I have had varifocals for many years now and the first time it took me months and months to get used to them but now it can take me a few weeks depending on how much my prescription has changed.
You are fortunate to be comfortable with your lenses and your frames :)
-
I have to wear my reading glasses for everything I do that's close up.
I can't go anywhere without them as I can't see anything very well close up !!
I hate having to wear them though, they leave red marks on the side of my nose,
they sometimes feel heavy .
I also have some for distance, these are great, so light I forget I've got them on.
I have thought about lazer treatment but it scares me in case it went wrong so will have to
stick with my specs 8)
-
Isn't there a court case against Optical Express at the moment re a woman who had laser surgery who now excessively light sensitive?
-
Hi sparkle.
I recently saw Philip Scofield on TV showing what happened when he had
lazer treatment. The tests before hand put me off, he had strips of paper
hanging from his eyes, he said it was very painful.

I had to have my new varifocals adjusted today because the focusing wasn't quite right. The lenses had to be angled slightly.
I was just beginning to adjust to the fit of the new frames and wasn't noticing them as much and now they feel different on my nose and I am aware of them all over again.
Just thought I might feel better for sharing and having a little moan
-
Babyjane - It isn't moaning it's sharing.
Hope the glasses feel better soon.
-
very frustrating babyjane
and it is good to share, so don't you worry about that

I have varifocals and it also takes me ages to get used to them if the prescription changes. Last year I decided I would invest in some trendy new frames after having the same ones for over 20 years!!! WHAT A MISTAKE. Plastic frames - look good but feel so heavy and of course red marks on nose. I had my the new prescription put in my old frames with reactolite (?) in the so I could use them in the summer (don't like using the reactolite all the time as it affects the colour of things and can be a bit slow changing. ). Am seriously considering going back to my old frames despite them looking a bit manky as they were a very lightweight wire frame that are quite big (not Dierdre Barlow big but bigger than is fashionable at the mo!) . They are great, especially for varifocals as they is plenty of room for the different strengths of glass and no red marks x Babyjane - suggest looking for a wire frame and speak to your optician about the weight of the lenses. They may have some other suggestionsx
-
thanks for your post annieb. I have my new frame with my new prescription and no reactolite and I also have my old trusty frame with my new prescription plus reactolite which I wear when out and about with the dog. It is the new frame with new prescription which is taking some getting used to but I will in the end. I just find that if I share it then I get less obsessed by it :)
sparkle, every word that comes from your keyboard sounds like something I would have said. It is seriously uncanny ???
Limpy and purplenanny thank you for your empathy.
I will adjust, I will just be a bit of a pain until I do. It doesn't help that I have a cataract which means although the prescription is correct I cannot get really good correction. It is most noticeable when I am reading :(
-
Keep an eye on the cataract (pardon the pun!). If it gets any worse take yourself off to the optician and get referred to a specialist. I had cataracts removed from both eyes a few years ago and my eyesight is better now than it was 25 years ago!!! Op it fairly straightforward and recovery very quick.
-
hi annieb, it is checked at the opticians yearly. Apparently it cannot be referred until it reaches a certain level which is frustrating (for the optician too) as it is a simple procedure if done early on but now it is left longer so is more involved. Rather silly but there it is.
-
'a painful shoulder'
OMG, you are me!!!!!!! :o
I went to my lovely chiropractor on Friday and am using ice and heat and shouldn't really be on the keyboard as it aggravates it.
Mine is a very old injury from my days working in a care home for the elderly. there is scar tissue and the muscle goes into spasms.
-
what can we do to cheer you up sparkle?

:foryou:

My glasses need cleaning ……. I'm kind of peering around the smudges ;D
