Has anyone else noticed how virtually all the discussions and coverage of the proposed war on IS is being conducted by those of the male gender? It seems that they all have very short, very selective memories too. It all reminds me of boys fighting in the playground - I've got a bigger, better fighter plane than you! For the first time in my life I agree with Diane Abbott, who is one of only two women I have heard express a opinion. Oh dear :'(

I hate to think what's going to happen to that Taxi Driver from Bolton.
He'd only gone to distribute aid.
I can't see IS taking the decision for Britain to participate in the conflict well.

Not sure what we can do but try and oppose the dreadful things that are happening way to close to home.
Perhaps if the world had more female leaders then then things would be a lot calmer......unless they were menopausal of course ;D

I had the same thought Honeybun, then I remembered Mrs T and the Falklands. I just don't think we women get so hung up on a show of force.

Not sure what else they can do to be honest. I hate wars, but something needs to be done to stop them. Diplomacy doesn't seem to work in these situations.

I'me sure you ladies are correct, something does need to be done to stop the horrible things that are being done. Still concerned for Alan Henning though.............

It's a step back to the dark ages.
I never thought in my lifetime I would have to read of these atrocities except in history books.

Yep - the Crusades were ordered by the Pope. No media in those days but men still rallied, putting their women-folk into Chastity belts. Problem is 'out there', it's Tribal. Old habits die hard ………

These sort of atrocities do happen though Honeyb. Beheadings are quite commonplace in Saudi Arabia - you just don't hear about them very often unless you live or work there. They are a spectator sport. Not nice at all. How can these things still be allowed to happen?

but can it stop them because they think they are right in what they do so they won't just say 'oh, ok, we'll stop'. If they feel their way is being threatened won't they fight for it all the more

I heard some soldier on the Today programme who said exactly that. His view is that an aggressive response from the West just feeds their warped view of us and that we should therefore do nothing. He also suggested that other countries like Saudi Arabia and Kuwait could do more, since they have the capability and are themselves Arabs

We have played right into their hands, just what they wanted, they embrace an eye for an eye.
Nothing has been learned from the atrocities of the WW2.. and all other wars.
I really can't see what the answer to all this is, just more deaths.

there was a woman on the news last night from Wootton Bassett, talking a lot of sense, but I didn't catch her name (Sheila someone?).
War's an easy way out for politicians who have to be seen to be 'doing something' about I.S. Saw a report in the Guardian that IS are worth at least 2 billion as they control oil resources as well as grain, water etc.
Not so easy to cut off their funding and we are so dependent on oil from very dodgy regimes.
It makes us all so much less safe too. Here in London, I worry about OH on the tube. You can't police the tube and you know someone will try something sometime.
Saw the craziness has spread to Algeria following France's airstrikes on IS. Some poor mountain guide (french) was beheaded. Evil bastards.

oldsheep my son commutes into London on train and tube each day. I have to try very hard not to stress about it all but I understand your concerns.

Of course we worry. It's the unexpected-ness of bombings etc., because 'they ' know more than those they attack. I wouldn't go to MK because of all that glass for longer than I had to, haven't been to London for years ::)
However, brutality is closer to home than we think: i.e. abuse to children, women being attacked by partners/husbands …….. most abuse can be 'justified' by the perpetrator …….. sadly it's historic as well as going to happen in the future :'(
If you think how families argue and how, like a pebble in a puddle that can spread down the Centuries …… :-\ ………. these Tribes won't negotiate and the Arab nations will unite …………. :-X
