Has anyone been to see anything at the Festival or the Fringe? I have not been through for years.

PS. did like the hoover joke!

Isn't it just about over now? We saw some street artists a week past Friday who were very good. There were some not so mind you.

Nope .

Not been to the festival, would like to go.
OH has been telling the hoover joke to anything with a pulse ::)
-
Didn't find it funny …….. perhaps because of the person delivering it …..
-
When I was young I used go every year. The atmosphere is brilliant. Of course there will be things you don't like but plenty for everyone.
The tattoo is great if a little shortbread and kilty.
I think Hurditys daughter was a performer....How great is that.

We've been to see Leith Theatre's Paras Over the Barras. That was really good! Then we're going to hear the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Edinburgh Festival Chorus and Thomas Trotter (organist par excellence! - there's a big organ solo near the end) perform Janaceck's Glagolitic Mass. :great: Can't wait!

Hi there
Just catching up with threads. Yes I've been - my daughter has been performing there every year since 2008 except for 2012 so I've been all of the years she has! I absolutely love it!!
This year I only went to fringe events and usually this is what I go to mainly - but some years ( eg last year when my mum came too) I go to the main festival events eg a symphony orchestra or a ballet as she loves those ( and I do too depending on what they are).
I've never been to the tattoo and fireworks but one year I went to the festival with my two youngest sons and we had an apartment near the Grassmarket just below the castle and we could see the fireworks from there!
The atmosphere on the Royal Mile is amazing and the whole city is buzzing and so beautiful. I love the bridges over streets and how the buildings start way down below and then about 4 or 5 storeys up is the ground level for the street above and the building goes on up. Also the cobbled streets and all the narrow side alleys.
Yes the fringe finished on Bank hol monday but I think the international arts festival is carrying on - I presume that is what you are going to dulciana? Hope you enjoy it!

Thanks Hurdity - yes, it's part of the international festival. We hadn't planned to go to anything but a couple of weeks ago, I was idly looking online at what was on in both festivals when I found out about this concert. I squealed out loud and ran to the phone to book tickets. I must have sounded daft! ::)
-
...............And what a concert it was!! A group of us went - me, Hubby, sister, Dad, sisters-in-law and their hubbies. Oh, the SOUNDS! Symphony orchestra, choir, solo singers and the Usher Hall's mighty and powerful organ played by one of the UK's best organists. We had brilliant seats - centre stalls about eighteen rows back, which seemed to get the very best of the sounds being produced. Part one of the concert was a fascinating new work, and part two was one I knew bits of already but needed to hear the whole thing. Part three was - - - no, it had to come to an end :'( and we went home. But, aaaaah..............I was walking on air afterwards..............!!!
-
Dulciana - Glad you enjoyed the concert.
Assume part three was Janaceck's Glagolitic Mass?
Don't know it but assume it is good to listen to.
-
Limpy - yes, part 2 was Janaceck's Glagolitic Mass and it's fantastic to listen to. The BBC vans were outside the Usher Hall so I presume it will be broadcast or televised some time later in the year.
Would recommend! :)
-
Will pay attention and listen when it comes on.
Are the horn parts any good?
-
I have been to the Military Tattoo in Edinburgh, when you are from a Service family it is something very special, only been once but never missed it on TV, it was always so emotional.
When I lived in Berlin they use to do something very similar at the Olympiastadion Stadium, I always remember when they reinacted "The Burning Of Moscow" it was spectacular and I have never forgotten it.
-
Limpy - there are some sumptuous brass parts in general!
-
Dulciana - Will definitely listen.
-
Limpy - we're given to understand, from hubby's colleague who sang in the choir for this performance - that the concert will probably be broadcast once the Proms are over.
-
Thanks Dulciana

This is for dulciana, he appeared on my FB this morning as I liked "Italian Living" and get updates on my News Feed.

The rest of us can just appreciate how gorgeous he is :)
-
Thanks Silverlady! He certainly is a lovely pianist and makes it all look so easy! And I agree, he is easy on the eye, too.......! ;)
-
Limpy - the concert that included the Janaceck Glagolitic Mass was broadcast yesterday afternoon (Hubby and I missed it!) and is available to listen to on the Radio 3 website for the next four weeks. :)
-
Thanks Dulciana - Will try to get it, however broadband speed is dire at the moment, hey ho
