Title: TMJ
Post by: honeybun on August 21, 2014, 01:19:58 PM
I have had jaw discomfort for the past four of five days. It radiates down the side of my neck and along the top of my shoulder. I thought initially if was dental related but I have had a good poke and prod around the teeth on that side and all is fine. It's now around my ear and round the back of my neck.

Could it be TMJ. My jaw is also quite stiff.

Oh I'm fed up with these aches and pains. Slowly falling to bits.

HB this sounds muscular, you could be clenching your jaw ( stress and tension) probably in your sleep and causing the pain the your jaw and down your neck  and top of shoulder.

You have been doing some heavy lifting too, as well as being stressed.

I have had this off and on for years.  The doc could find no cause for it however I only seem to get it at times of high stress.  Pain so bad at times have had to sleep upright on the sofa as I could not bare to lay on the right side of my face.

Hello honeybun and sorry to hear that you are suffering.

Have you changed anything in the last six weeks that could have contributed to this? Different mattress or pillows, even altered posture. I ask because I noticed that laying on the sofa began to give me stiff shoulders and the new footstool that my husband used and said was very comfortable ended up causing him hip pain. A doctor told me that it often takes six weeks for muscle problems to manifest themselves so people don't always make the right connection.

Best wishes and I hope you find a solution soon.

K.

Maybe Silver lady is right in the fact I was doing some heavy lifting last week. Perhaps I strained something.
I really don't know, I haven't changed anything else. It comes and goes so maybe neuralgia, maybe a tooth. If it's no better by Monday I will see about it.

I get fed up with all these niggly things.

Maybe with a bit of luck it will just go.

If you can get to a physio who knows about TMJ, they can do some helpful things.
Mine is chronic and I go to see her when it gets too bad. I'd been twice to the dentist for 'toothache' and X rays - all from the damn jaw muscle in spasm. Physio explained that it's the body's strongest muscle.

You know me too well CLKD.   :sigh:

It's been a lot better today so will see what tomorrow brings.

I do know no matter what I must go for a check up and a chat with the dentist. Just got to pick up that phone  :-\

So pick up the phone for a discussion, he may well suggest physio or a visit to the GP  ;) - I'll hold you hand when I come up your way ……...

the physio TMJ manipulations are interesting. Not just jaw but temple and top of the head too. You'd prob need your neck massaging though, although massage isn't in itself enough.
Damn anxiety. Good luck Honeyb. x
