Title: feel so ill
Post by: porcia on June 19, 2014, 07:26:35 PM
Hi to everyone.
Im pretty much new to this great group,iv only posted once before and that was a few months ago.
At the moment im feeling rather rubbish,i was diagnosed in 2009 with hypothyoidism and am taking thyroxine for this.
For the past two years i have been having a good few bouts of either uti,s or sinus problems,i have had a procedure done where they look at your bladder and everything was good.
I also had cryotherapy done two weeks ago as i had a mild cervical dysplasia.
Im going to be 43 in a few months time and i feel that whenever i approach my gp about possible peri menopause they dismiss it or say to me that the only way for me to know is if i no longer have any periods.
My periods for the past year are early every month, and sometimes they are lighter then sometimes heavier.
Iv also had a scan done to check my ovaries and to check for fibroids everything was fine.
My anxiety has gone worse ,im not sleeping properly, feeling hot then chilled, heart palps sometimes, pmt has gone a lot worse, muscle tension headaches, depressed more.
I have had blood tests done today for my thyroid again, allergies, fbc,.
Im just at a loss at the moment,
xx

Thank you  :)
The gp who was talking to me about menopause had probably been through the menopause herself, not being horrible by saying that but its so upsetting when you explain what is going on and being told to get on with it,
I just dont feel like me anymore.
Coupled with my youngest daughter who is 16 and has now left school and ready for college in septemeber iv got this empty feeling to,
Gosh it just sucks lols xx

Im going to give them a ring next week hun when my blood test results are back and see if i can have a chat with the main gp there she is lovely.
The problem with my practice is that when i went there 2 years ago there were 4 gp,s there and now there is only 1 ,and 1 or 2 locums.
Its a nightmare .

Hi porcia

I know how you feel too, I was having a horrendous peri meno which started about 3 years ago,I also have an underactive thyroid keep an eye on your levels as the thyroid can play up around this time, I am now taking HRT the patches which are kinder if you suffer from headaches or migraine, I had so many symptoms which at the time I had never heard of, my Mum sailed through with just a few hot flushes! I thought id be the same, but was diagnosed with ms at the same time, together with a tumor on my Parathyroid which thankfully was non cancerous.
When I woke up from surgery I could feel vibrating, and no one in the hospital could say what it was, and yes you've guessed it. It was meno symptom, I also had a cobweb feeling on the end of my nose, burning mouth sore dry eyes, palpertations doom and dread feelings, kept crying for no reason and wouldn't go out for a while .

Have you thought of trying anything HRT wise ?  I'm 48 now and no longer have any symptoms. There is light at the end of the tunnel! And there will be for you too.

Xx

Welcome!  Peri-menopause can happen at anytime, no age is 'too early'  ::) ……… add to that thyroid problems …..

Make a list of your symptoms, keep a food and mood diary for 3 months and see if there is any link.  Make sure you keep well hydrated, eat regularly, exercise when you are able to …….. have a browse of the menus, left of screen!

What blood tests has your GP arranged?  Hormones alter all the while so testing is well known for being un-reliable, one needs to go on symptoms.

Let us know how you get on!

Hi there,
Thank you both for your input :)
What i tend to find is that out of say 28 days a month i get 7 days that are ok,the rest are awful.
Iv had an allergy blood test and a fbc done at the hospital on wednesday, then thursday i have had a thyroid test, fbc again, testing for diabeties, and liver and kidney function.
I dont know if i can go on my owm mothers experience but she was around 50/52 when her menopause had finished.
I have had the burning tongue problem, dry burning eyes and today i feel as though my period is going to start even though im not due until july 4th.
I dont drink alcohol and quit smoking 6 years ago dont drink coffe only de caff tea and water, and flavoured water, pretty basic lols.
I dont eat afull meal as to be honest its to much for me and i have awful and have a reflux with it .
Im thinking of asking my gp on monday if i can give hrt a try xx

Yes hun im going to :)
The last gp i saw who is a locum a lot older than me basically told me to just get on with it  :-\
Looked at me strange when i was telling her all of my symptoms and said to me "what makes you assume its perimenopuase" :( xx

I would spit bricks! "How long have you got" springs to mind  :cuss: ……… don't these GPs realise that they are there to help, assist and listen!  she'll be there one day  ;)

Lols i think she already has had her menopause.
I also want to check with them about dizziness as im getting that often to.
Also this feeling of looking back on what i could have done with my life,i dont know its kinda hard to explain xx
Title: Re: feel so ill
Post by: CLKD on June 20, 2014, 07:43:12 PM
Oh that's another thread altogether  ::) - nowt wrong with looking back, we are here because of our History  ;).  Writing down how you are now and where you thought your Life might go when you were 20 can help sort out whether we did take the right decisions …….. I have done some silly things but I think I've got it right!  It's common at this time of Life to wonder.

As for the dizziness, this could be due to a nerve trapped in the back of the neck?  I get this sometimes, makes me go 'oh' …….

Im going to mention the neck and shoulder tension on monday.
I just wish that gp,s would not skate around the obvious when it comes to menopause, stop acting as though its a taboo subject.

There are so many symptoms that can mimic what ladies go through during The Change that it is easy to be fobbed off at a time we feel extra vulnerable!

Yes sadly I understand that, when I was diagnosed a few years ago with an underactive thyroid I spent a whole year going back and forth to different gp,s having endless blood tests and being offered different brands of antidepressants to combat depression, but after changing my wording from being tired to not having any.energy I was finally sent for a thyroid test.and it was badly.underactive xxx

Hi Porcia, I too have an under active thyroid and have done for over ten years now. my medication is stable now and has been for a few years, I feel a lot better I.e. not falling asleep all the time lol but I do have other issues with it too.
I went to the Gp about three years ago with really bad anxiety, depression, heavy periods and lots of other peri symptoms too but I was dismissed as I was not old enough!! I was 44!! I had started my periods really early as I was still in primary school. She relented and said gave me a hormone test only because I took my husband with me and said 'well isn't there a test you can do? but it came back normal, I had previously been given anti depressants by another Gp in the Feb but I didn't want to go on them.....but by the time I saw the other Gp who was an older lady herself I gave in and took them, as the anxiety was stopping me from going out on my own and even dreading going to work too, I felt like I couldn't function normally.
I also went to the hospital for scans on my ovaries, womb etc and was told everything was fine and there was plenty of eggs still!!
I was given tablets to take when I had a period as they were so heavy which did help during the day but at night when I obviously didn't take one I would flood and have clots.
Since this January I have missed two periods, have had hot flushes albeit mild ones, feel anxious again and wake every morning feeling the dread of the day but I know deep down there is nothing to worry about, I also had tense nervous headaches every days for weeks too.
I went to the Gp three ago on Monday and I saw my old favourite Gp, I told her what was happening with my periods and that I'm so heavy I flood at night time and have to get up and have a shower etc and told her about how I feel and my hot flushes. Straight away she said would you like to go on HRT!! OMG I thought someone is actually taking me seriously and I said yes as I need the reassurance of having regular periods as I never know when the monthly will happen.
I've been taking Elleste Duet 1mg for nearly three weeks and two and a half weeks after my last period I have had another, at first I thought it was break through bleeding but no it's been a full on period heavy leaking and feeling generally like crap wanting to cry and just go and lock myself in a room on my own.
So I know how your feeling and you feel as if your talking to yourself. Maybe it's because I'm 47 now that I'm being taken more seriously I don't know.
Early days yet but I shall give them a go, I just don't want periods like this every month.
I had my yearly Thyroid blood test on Wednesday so we'll see what the results are I've been on 100mcg of thyroxine a day, and at one point I was on 175mcg!! and I have been losing weight over the years too which is a bonus!!

Hope you don't feel too down for too long I'm always up for a chat and go back to your GP's don't battle on like I did for three years because one dr don't want to listen and take you seriously..
Good luck

Sue

Hi sue.
Thank you also for your reply.
I am hoping to.see the gp tomorrow who does understand and hoping also that my blood results are back.
I to was told when I had my.ovaries scanned that all was fine, I saw my gynaecologist in.April.this year as I had to have a check up before I had my.cryotherapy done this month.
The gynecologist said there was a good supply of blood around my pelvis and told me what foods and drinks to avoid as I am prone to utis, although when I do have a dip test done at my gps I usually don't have one, so that's why I then.went to.an urologist so they could check my bladder and again all was good.
My periods started when I was 11years old, I'm coming up to 43 now.
It's horrible when you.don't have a gp who will listen to you I know my own body and what I'm.going through, even ad I'm replying iv got all the tell tale signs my period is imminent and according to my planner it's not due till July 5th,iv got to log my dates as I'm.early every month.,there was one month.when.I.was 8 days late. X

Just been to see my gp and all my blood test results from last week are marked as no further action,so iv been sent for a fsh test, had that done earlier and gp has given me a load of leaflets to read so I can decided if I want to go onto.hrt, she has said that even if the fsh test Comes back showing normal she is still offering me hrt due to all the symptoms I have x

Thank you ladies.
My gp has given me patches but there was.none in at my chemist so I'm.picking them up today gosh I can't rememywhat they are called so.will post back later,my fsh test came back as 14 but my gp said that she doesn't really go by that test x

Glad you are getting something sorted. 14 is very low but I can't remember how old you are? It's good that your GP doesn't go on FSH results but more on symptoms. My level was around 70 at age 53.

Chemists usually have to order patches in.

I know hun it's like everything has come at me the same time,my eldest daughter who is 26 is getting married in 4weeks time and I'm stressed a bit about that as I have pretty bad anxiety and struggle when I'm around a lot of people,my youngest daughter who is 16 is going into.college this September so I kinda feel a bit empty tbh,iv now picked up my patches and they are everol sequi iv had 8 patches and have to use 2 a week gp told me to start them when I have my period x

Title: Re: feel so ill
Post by: CLKD on June 27, 2014, 04:59:11 PM
WOW! that's a lot - not.  How does your GP think that will help  ::) .......... 2mg is hardly enough to make a worm sleepy ........ you are hardly going to become addicted - I was taking 10mg 3-4 times daily 'as necessary'  ::) .......... rant over <sigh>

So take 2mg the night before? another dose at breakfast to stop those anxiety surges ......... what time's the wedding?  Hat or fascinator thingy?  Colour, ribbons, feathers ..........

What happened was the diazepam I have left are from.the 12mg altogether she prescribed for me this, month for when I had my cervical procedure, I may ask her if I can have a few more'the wedding isn't until 3.00pm and I have all 4 of my daughters and 3 grandchildren staying over at mine the night before, it's been hard as my daughter has changed her colour scheme twice,iv got a.fascinator a silver one with.a few feathers in it, x

Hi Porcia

I'm glad you got HRT patches, I'm on the same ones and found them excellent!

My Doctor told me to start them on the first day of my period, but also said if its irregular and and you can't wait that long you can also start them when ever you like.

I'm sure I started off on the estradiol/estrogeon only ones of which you will have four of them and four of a mixture of estrogeon and prog. They prompt you to have a bleed each month, but mine are light, I get mine on the last week of prog patches, they may appear differently for you until they settle down.

They are pretty quick in working on the hot flushes, I saw a difference in about 4/5 days, they emotional ones I think took a bit longer.

If you have any questions please  feel free to ask.

Good luck

Hi smokey and thank you :)
Im on the ones that say on the patches systen 50 and there are 4 of them then another 4 that have systen conti on them .
Tbh my hot flushes havent been at the stage where im soaking in sweat its usually under my armpits and boobs, and i have had a lot of cold sweats to.
It took me a while to work out what it was as i was diagnosed with an underactive thyroid 6 years ago, thats regulated and i had my bloods back last week and thats fine.
I have been taking iron supplements prescribed by my gp as i was low on iron as my periods were so heavy it was crazy.
I guess i have been having a whole load of perimenopause symptoms for the past 3/4 years and if im honest i put it down to my thyroid playing up or stress as there has been an awful lot of stress in my life.
Im currently waiting for CBT counselling but thats another matter.
Iv had a whole load of blood tests taken ,scans different procedures done and everything was fine.
Im dubious about the patches as my bad habit is i have to read the part about side efects,
x

Yep we all read the 'side effects' info  ::) but remember in these days of legality, the Companies have to state everything that might go 'wrong'  :-X .......... now I usually take the medication then read to see if the side effects are 'expected'  ;)

Lols :)
On a more serious note is it possible for women to go.through perimenopause and have the hot flashes but not to the pointbwhere they are dripping in.sweat?
I'm just asking as I.have read on here that so many ladies have night sweats and are soaked through.
I have had a few hot flashes where my face has been.burning and under my.arms have been sweating, but mine tend to be more of cold flashes if that kinda makes sense x
Title: Re: feel so ill
Post by: CLKD on June 28, 2014, 05:41:17 PM
Yep.  I had a few years of sudden warmth after my bath about 10 mins. after taking me evening meds..  Never understood what had caused it.  I also had itchy insteps in the evenings!

As for cold flushes, I had these when taking Tamoxifen - so it is hormonal!

Women are all different porcia when it comes to hot flashes/flushes/sweats.

For a couple of years mine were as you describe and then intensified into the sweating type - drenching everything all the time and steaming up my glasses! Some women don't get any at all and others suffer for the rest or their lives. There seems to be no rhyme or reason for it. Only today I was talking to a friend's mum of 83 who had never had a hot flush but her coffee-morning friend is 86 and has had them every hour during the day and up to three times a night since she was in her mid fifties.
