Title: Mammogram during period?
Post by: yorkshirerose on April 20, 2014, 11:16:29 AM
Just been invited for my first mammogram and sod's law I've got a period for the first time in 5 months - should I cancel the mammogram or is it OK to have one when on a period :(

There is no need to cancel a mammogram due to a period. The mammogram will scan the breast effectively no matter what part of your cycle you are in.

Thanks Taz - will give them a ring on Tuesday to be on the safe side - didn't want to waste an appointment that someone else could have by going and then not being able to have it because of the 'red flag' appearing....thought my membership had run out :(

There really is no need to phone. It makes no difference at all.

There is no need to  ring- honestly!
A period makes no difference to a mammogram.

Can I just ask why you thought it might make a difference? I'm curious  :)

I'd been told that a) if your breasts are sore it would make the mammogram more painful and b) that you could get an irregular result during your period....will ring tomorrow.....

Who told you?

I've never seen this in any information and had 4 mammograms.

If you have bad PMS and have sore breasts then yes, it might hurt a bit more but it's still all over in seconds.

If having a period was an issue this would be stated when you had the appt sent.

Been having yearly mammograms for 8 years now, in every phase of my cycle.

Definitely does not make a difference other than if you have sore boobs - that can be a bit eyewatering, but it's over so quickly.

Yes, it is correct about sore breasts. I've often been told that too, but it wouldn't have any effect on the mammogram itself. If you are prone to having sore breasts it could be a bit uncomfortable, but honestly, it's over so quickly that it's quite easy to just suck it up for a few seconds. Women are made of tough stuff - now men on the other hand..... ;)
