Hi there
I am interested in how others may have coped. I am 44 years old and up to 20 days ago (around 3 weeks )had a normal 28 day cycle. Initiall ( maybe 6 weeks ago) I started getting 3-4 intense hot flushes ( though flush does not really describe the sensation more like a rush) in the night, that woke me up so I was exhausted in the day.
2 weeks ago I booked a Drs appointment as I was a week late with my period and suspected the peri menopause to which a blood test came back as 'confirmed menopause'.
Ten days ago I went from a functioning working mum of 2, to a wreck. I almost collapsed on the school run, ( a 5 minute walk), feel exhausted, look and feel like I have run a marathon, am dizzy/feel faint if I move too quick ( even looking left and right). I look noticeably ill, am grey and have drooping/ heavy eyes.
I have now been on HRT for a week as I was desperate to take anything, but with no real improvement as yet. I have also had a suite of blood test taken, all have come back normal. The GP is hoping that it just 'blows over'. In the mean time I have been signed off work for the next 2 weeks as I cant actually function.
Anyone out there experienced the same and did anything help?

To be honest it sounds to me that you have more going on than just the meno. It does really not generally cause such severe symptoms. Could you have picked up a virus that is making you feel so poorly.
Of course not sleeping does impact a lot but you sound as if you are ill along with being menopausal.
Can you go back to your GP and ask perhaps.
Meno kind of sneaks up on you rather than hitting you over the back of the head and making you ill.

You may have a bit of wear and tear in your cervical spine if you feel woozy when you turn your head.
Getting up and down quickly can = wooziness, postural hypertension?
Could you be anaemic? How is your diet?

I had the exact same symptoms for years! They were all caused by peri and I had tests of every kind (MRI, ent, brain scans etc). I wa hit with severe vertigo to the point where I could barely stand - this was eventually fixed by using progesterone - I had the symptoms cyclically from ovulation to menstruation! I know these are severe symptoms but they do happen!!
Hb mine hit overnight - no symptoms at all to literally lying on bed unable to move - everyone is different!!
Hope you feel better soon x
Ps I also used a homeopathic remedy for the dizziness (vertigo heel) - I wasn't expecting much but it did help a bit!!
Ps keep a diary of your symptoms but hopefully the hrt will help.

Keep a food diary too for 3 months ;)

Yes, yes, yes- I had the exact symptoms at 48 the vertigo wrecked my life. The Doctors could not find anything, told me it was Labrynthitis...... but from about 7 days before my period I felt drunk all the time, it was horrid.
On HRT and find when I withdraw I get dizzy. I looked ill and never knew how bad the meno could be. I could not function without HRT
Good luck W

Hi - thanks for the answers, helps to know I am not alone. I should add I am pretty health conscious and eat a protein and vegetable rich diet. Before this I did exercise 3 days a week but now I cant even do the washing up without feeling exhausted. I have started to track my food on the free fitnesspal food diary on the web and seem to be doing ok for 'maintain current weight'. will check out homeopathtic help for vertigo, thanks :)

Hi Ktoon
:welcomemm: from me too.
I tend to agree with honeybun - it sounds like you have menopausal symptoms and quite possibly a virus - I say this because I had the dizziness thing and thought there was something terribly wrong. Went to the doc who thought it was bppv but it seems to be better now - it went on for about 2-3 weeks. I dropped my cup of tea when lifted my head off the bed and practically passed out due to dizziness when doing sit-ups at exercise class - also had the head-turning thing - felt dizzy and light-headed when I was standing up while out working. Also exhausted.
I too eat an extremely healthy diet - nothing needs to be improved on, take exercise and rarely get ill
Not saying it's not meno- but could be both - and this particular virus seems to be a weird long one.
Keep an eye on it - and just a thought - what sort of HRT are you on because you would expect side effects initially anyway?
Do hope you feel better soon anyway!

Sounds like labyrinthitis or BPPV, the symptoms are very similar, one is a virus and the other an problem with the crystal's in the inner ear, there are other reasons for dizzy symptoms too.
The Eply manoeuvre can help with BPPV or sometimes it resolves on its own.

Don't automatically assume that the symptoms are a virus.

I had some dizzy episodes before HRT - just once a week or so and for less than a minute, but the HRT stopped that and I forgot all about it.

Mine was initially diagnosed at labyrinthitis (it wasn't) then bppv (again it wasn't) then possibly menieres (yup it wasn't)! Some women are particularly susceptible to dizziness from hormone fluctuations. I wasted over a year where I couldn't walk to the end of my street from ovulation to menstruation - progesterone initially fixed it but then estrogen dropped and I started full hrt. When I was on cyclical progesterone the vertigo came back after my last day of use. I now use progesterone every day and feel much better.
You will get through this but I know how hard it is!! Xxx
