Title: Prempak C for post menopause
Post by: ann58 on March 07, 2014, 04:52:07 PM
My doctor has just changed me from Everol conti (I took it for 8 weeks) to Prempak C. I haven't had a period for 2 years so am post menopause. All the info I can see relates to Prempak C being for perimenopause? Has anyone else who is post menopause been prescribed it? I am so nervous about taking it and thinking it will be the wrong one for me is making me worse.

Did the doctor say why s/he changed you to Prempak C? Also why did you change from the Evorel? It won't actually do you any harm, but it is one that will give you a regular monthly bleed - which you don't need to have if you are post-menopausal, although some of us still choose to have a cycle.

Some post-meno women - get irregular bleeding in the first few months of taking HRT for the first time but this generally settles when the body adjusts to its new dose of hormones.

He changed me because he thinks tablets are better then patches but I really think he may have prescribed me the wrong one. I was doing okay on Everol conti  apart from some breakthrough bleeding and breast tenderness. He said I woul be less likely to have bleeding with the Prempak C.

Hi ann58,

You are right. He has definitely prescribed the wrong hrt. Prempak c is a sequential combined tablet hrt for women still having periods. He should have prescribed a continuous combined hrt prep similar to the one you were on. The nearest one to Prempak is Premique.
I don't know what to suggest over the weekend other than see your pharmacists and see if they can sort something for you.
Best of luck

Luckily I have enough patches to last me until a week on Monday so will stick with those until I can speak to the lady doctor who knows more about menopause stuff. I called the doctors back ans said I thought I had been prescribed the wrong one but he just told the receptionist to tell me it is right :( I am so stressed with it all :( Have sat and cried tonight.

I have been chuntering away on your behalf. I used to be a pharma rep for Prempak c so I know he's utterly wrong! I'm so angry a could slap him clean into next week!!!
Please ask to see a different doc asap as this is so close to malpractice.
<takes a deep breath>
On the plus side, the patches were doing a not bad job. Breast tenderness is not uncommon in most preps, just a matter of find one which suits you the best.
Thank goodness you have some spare patches.

Take courage, you knew he was wrong.
And have some  :foryou: dry your eyes and enjoy your weekend.

Thank you so much for your reply. I was so upset tonight, I spent £15.70 on tablets I didn't feel were right but thought I should trust my doctor. I will call first thing Monday morning and insist I need to see the lady doctor. I am wondering if it was changed because the patches I am on are more expensive to them:( I suffer with anxiety anyway and tonight has made me worse. I really appreciate your help, Thank you.

Double
I suffer from anxiety too, and I know this would be the last thing you need.
Take heart from the fact you knew it was wrong, and look forward to you appointment with the lady GP.
Taking loving care of yourself this weekend. You deserve it.

Thank you again Galadriel and also Hurdity for your reply. Going to try to get some sleep now and hopefully will be able to update you on Monday if I can get to see the lady GP.

Just wanted to say not to worry too much about the breakthrough bleeds. It can take up to six months to fully settle on a conti.
I am on Evoril conti and after the initial spotting I am now totally bleed free.

Good luck with a different GP. I would consider complaining to be honest. He could be excused the first time but to get it wrong twice is unprofessional.

The other point is that tablets are NOT safer than patches: they carry a higher risk of blood clots/ stroke.
Honestly, drs like this should be struck off! I cannot believe how they are practising when they don't know the basics of some treatments.

Also Evorel patches contain bio-identical oestrogen - ie the same as we produce in our own bodies whereas Prempak is derived from horse urine and containds a mix of oestrogens, most of which we do not have in our bodies. The only possible issue with Evorel conti is if you react badly to the progestogen (norethisterone) which gives some women headaches, anxiety or pms symptoms, but if you didn't have these then keep on with them - hope you can get your money back if you haven't opened the tabs - due to incorrect prescription!

Thank you all for your replies. It is hard to tell if the Everol make me anxious as I suffer with anxiety anyway and I think I may have got more anxious worrying about going on hrt! :) I am feeling more positive today and going to tell the doctor I want to continue with the patches.

I managed to see the lady doctor today and she was lovely. She agreed I should stay on Everol Conti and that the Prempak was not good for me. In future I will make sure that all my appointments are with her.

Good news ann58!  :)  I hope the patches continue to suit you.

Did you suffer from anxiety before menopause or before taking HRT? It may be that the norethisterone in the Evorel conti is adding to this as this does have this effect in some women. You might like to think of changing to Femseven or even separate oestrogen patches and bio-identical progesterone (Utrogestan) if you suspect this to be the case - but if you are generally well most of the time probably best not to change things at the moment!

I have suffered from anxiety since 2003. It was really bad for a year then I just had little blips now and again until 2 years when I had an accident (fell off a ladder!) and it triggered the anxiety again. it is a lot better again now.
