Title: Anyone had testosterone prescribed?
Post by: Lewis on January 16, 2014, 09:03:26 PM
Hi
New onto here and wondered if anyone can help?  I'm 49 and  I've been on hrt for about 4years-three different kinds-now on evorel conti patches which are managing sweats etc fine.  Some spotting after 2 months but I understand that's quite common.  Main problem for me from the off has been lack of libido-just fell off a cliff as soon as I hit menopause.  I'm.seeing a private GP but she won't hear of prescribing testosterone off licence.  I understand that some private consultants will and wondered if anyone has done this? I've found some gel for women from Australia on the internet but have been advised that it would be safer to have it properly prescribed.  Any experiences would be great to hear about.
Thank you.

My GP told me that testosterone would lower my voice and it wouldn't come back ........... though I know my lack of sex drive is hormonal, has been since the 1970s  >:(

Unfortunately, there is great reluctance to prescribe testosterone particularly as the patches have now been withdrawn for commercial reasons. I have been prescribed tibolone hrt with testosterone for a 3 month trial. Now 2 months in and seen no improvements ( however having other health issues that most definitely get in the way of any improvement on libido) and I will be 60 this year. You are much younger. Worth looking into ?

Your GP gave the wrong advice CLKD. If the balance is right then this wouldn't happen but maybe that was some time ago?

Thank you for all your replies.  I have tried livial but my night sweats came back after 2 months so I had to start on the patches.  Sounds like it might be worth trying to find a private consultant.  Will keep looking...

Have a look at the menus left of screen for a menopause clinic?

I think that menopause clinics are not happy to prescribe testosterone either - well the one I was treated by wouldn't. I may be worth ringing around though.

Hi Lewis

I am new to this site (found out about it after Patsy Kensitt's appearance on This Morning like lots of others and have just joined).  I am 49 and am going to put my journey with hrt on here just as soon as I get a moment.  However, in the meantime saw your post re testosterone and thought I'd share my experience with you.  I saw my GP a couple of years ago with all the usual peri menopausal symptoms one of which was lack of libido.  She referred me to a Mr Spooner at Rotherham Hospital (don't know where you live, I am in Yorkshire) who specialises in this sort of thing.  He prescribed me intrinsa patches but unfortunately after 18 months they were withdrawn (a funding issue I think which is a real shame as they worked brilliantly).  I then went back to Mr Spooner and he prescribed me Testogel which is really for men but women can have it you just need a smaller amount, a pea size twice a week.  It is early days for me with this so I cannot say if it has worked as I have just changed hrt (long story) but my point is there is something you can do.  All you need is a good gp (mine is female and in her 50s so is sympathetic) and to be persistent.  PS I was prescribed a years supply on one prescription so it is also affordable.  Good luck

Interesting. The GP I have seen recently has suggested I see a gynaecologist she has worked with. However the initial appointment will cost £210 and a testosterone implant will cost £490, and that's not including follow up appointments. If I knew the treatment would work, we would find the money somehow. Was the Testagel on the NHS? Has it made any difference? Any problems?

Hi peri
Thank you for your reply-very interesting as I'm also in yorkshire! I will speak to my GP to try and get referred, or maybe see if I can go private, and see what happens.  Will be really interested to hear if it works for you and hope you get your hrt sorted soon.

Hi Ju Ju

Yes the testogel is on the nhs, I was given a years supply on one prescription so it is affordable.  However, I haven't started it yet as I have just changed my hrt and wanted to give that a chance to kick in without complicating things, new hrt is amazing and I haven't had any side effects yet once I've been on it a month I will introduce the testagel and let you know how I get on.  In the meantime I am new to this site and am just about to post my meno experience so far, peri xx

Thanks. Just had my blood taken to see if Tibolone has any impact on my testosterone levels. I suspect not. One of the side effects of low testosterone is the lack of erotic dreams and that is sadly lacking. If still low, I shall go and see the private gynaecologist.
