I have a question....Has anyone ever had chronic pain along the outside edge of their foot - at the bottom of the side below the ankle? I have tried looking online for answers and found none, and my new insurance does not kick in until Jan. 1 so no asking doc at the moment.
It seems to be worse with rest, and I can barely walk in the morning. Stiffness in the ankle/foot seem to go with it. It has been in the right foot for nearly three months, while just starting in the left about two weeks ago. The pain is present all day, though to a lesser degree once walking around for a bit.
Anyone have any clues as to what to do? Heat/cold seem to make no difference.

Thanks, Taz! Interesting read.
I know it's not the shoe problem, and would have said could not be the stress fracture because I'm not a runner and rest seems to aggravate it, but from the comments section I do wonder if that's what it is. Seeings how I am on my feet all day when I work, and it started while I was full time it really makes me think that's what's happened. Slow coming on and the fact it can be in either foot - both in my case. I have also gained - blech!! - nearly 30 pounds since the start of this year and would guess that's my biggest issue with my feet.
Need to figure out what to do since staying off my feet until it heals is out of the question. Don't like the idea of it getting worse though. Bad enough already.

I've been having trouble with my feet for the last 18 months. They go between burning, tingling, numb and then horrible pain on foot or ankle. Have had various tests and seen specialist etc and no one knows why. I changed hrt at the same time so not sure if it's hormonal. I have tried to cut down on hrt in order to see if pain goes away but my head feels all over the show and I end up upping the dose again. I am fed up with it but unsure what to do.

Amazing how things come together when you are going through something.....
Just saw a girl (she's mid 20's) at work who'd been out for several weeks. She had a boot cast on her foot. She'd originally been out to give birth to her second daughter, and had happened to mention to her doctor about increasing foot pain on the outside part of her foot. Turns out x-rays revealed hairline fractures in her foot. The only explanation for the fractures was being on her feet for work.
Sheesh! Are our bones getting thinner as a society or something?
LizeeeH - how long have you been dealing with it?
meno Lesley - very interesting to think hormones may be to blame. Guess that would make sense in the case of a pregnant young lady, as well!
-
Have read quite a lot lately about how pregnancy affects the feet. Perhaps I am barking up the wrong tree with hormones but when you are in constant pain you tend to grab onto possible reasons - well I do.

My OH has this, his GP sent him to a Podiatrists, who the referred him for an Xray and he is waiting for results, she said that a lot of people wear the wrong type of shoes, even having a leg slightly shorter then the other ( very common) can cause pain along the side of the foot.
The shoes she has recommended he gets are "Hotters"
It can be nerve pain too, even arthritis.

Hi lilfeather,
What you are describing sounds very much like plantar fasciitis. It was one of the first things to present itself when I first started having menopausal symptoms 10 years ago and also became hypothyroid. I remember my GP advising to buy Scholl foot inserts which did nothing to allieve it. It only disappeared after commencing Thyroxine to treat my thyroid. I believe it is the fascia in your feet that becomes dried out which is why it is so painful on rising in the mornings as you stretch the fascia after sleeping. Hope this helps.

I agree with last post, a relative of mine had this and got cortisone injections which helped, but did not clear it completely.

I have similar, particularly on the balls of my feet and tingling/numbness in my toes. I also have it in my calves. It is also worse in the morning and not so bad when wallking. I haven't tried HRT so it isn't connected to that. i also have under active thyroid (since birth) so that gets monitored regularly.

Ive been dealing with this for about 10 months....amongst all the other flaming aches n pains!!!!!

Hi lizeeh
Are your pains in the feet like the muscles have locked?

I get foot pain too. I used to have it in my left ankle, but suddenly one day I realised it had gone. However, it's now moved over to the outside of my right foot. When I stand up from sitting for a while I walk like I'm a 90 year old woman. It does ease up after a while, but it seems to nearly always be there.

Are you on hrt Dana?
Lesley x

Yes, Estradot 50 and Utrogestan
-
I take one and a half pumps of estrogel and utrogestan. Am floundering around wondering whether it's hrt or just me. I have tried coming off hrt but felt like I was going mad.

In my case I don't think it's HRT because I've been on that for a couple of years now, and this foot problem has only presented itself in about the last 6 months. I do need to lose some weight, so I'm wondering if that could be part of the problem. It's not overly debilitating though. I can still go walking most mornings without too many problems. The main problem for me is when I start walking after sitting for a while.
When the pain was in my left ankle I told the doctor and she didn't seem that interested, so I haven't mentioned the switch over to my right foot yet. Hopefully it might just disappear one day, like it did in my left foot.
-
Well, OK then. Got the inserts for my shoes and had a little relief the first couple days of using them, then right back to the same ol' painful deal. No difference at all whether or not I use the inserts at this point.
Dana- your experience with your feet sounds similar to mine, though I am not using HRT. Left foot pain disappeared for a couple months but now is back full-force. Hate walking like I was 30 years older than I am!

Rather surprisingly, the pain in my right foot seems a bit better lately. Maybe it's time for it to do it's disappearing act, and show up somewhere else. Interestingly, the knuckle on my middle finger on my right hand has been sore now for about a week......... ???
