Title: Newbie who needs some advice
Post by: Bracken willowshimmer on November 18, 2013, 02:47:10 PM
Hi,  I have been lurking for a couple of weeks and thought I would say hi.  I am 41 and started getting perimenopause symptons earlier in the year.  The worse symptom is anxiety.

I have visited the dr several times and am taking low dose a/d to help with anxiety.  I also take Agnes Castus daily.  I would really like to try HRT but my dr will not issue it because I suffer with migraine with aura.  Has anyone heard of this before?

Xx

Hi sarahm

 :welcomemm:

Sorry to hear about your anxiety. What other peri-menopausal symptoms are you having -maybe you are still having regular periods and no other symptoms?

It is usually recommended to try patch HRT for migraines - here is what it says on this site (A-Z medical conditions - blue menu to the left). However some of the progestogens (which are needed to prevent the womb lining over thickening from too much oestrogen) also have headaches as side effects so body-identical progesterone would be preferable (micronised progesterone) with separate Estrogen patch. You might need to find a doctor in the practice who specialises in menopause!

Migraine
Migraine is often triggered by hormonal fluctuations and therefore may occur around the time of a period. Such migraine may improve at the time of the menopause. Some women find that migraine may be triggered by the daily hormone fluctuations which can occur with oral (tablet) HRT so the transdermal (patch or gel) route is usually preferred with a history of migraine.
