Have suffered the palpitations, think as you panic it gets worse!  Upping my hrt and thyroxine for borderline thyroid stopped them but still get a sort of tumbling sensation twice a day , slightly unnerving,  ::)

Hi Jayne748... I am constantly fatigued...like full body shut down, aches especially in neck and back, joint pain, migraines and dizziness.

I had them too,

All these symptoms are down to fluctuating or low estrogen. Estrogen affects almost every organ, including the heart and blood vessels, and brain included.

Are you on hrt?

I'm age 65 and 6 years menopausal and I've been getting palpitations/flutters for the last 6 years.
I've had 5 ecg's 24hr and 48 hour monitors on and nothing showed up. They can appear in the morning/afternoon/ nighttime or during the night - totally random. They woke me at 1am this morning and didn't stop until around 6am?!
The Doctor did my bloods last week to test my thyroid again (been tested for this quite a few times) and once again it's within the range .. so score that off.
It must just be the depletion of oestrogen?
I'm not on HRT.
The Doctor offered me Beta Blockers to take everyday which I'm now considering.
I still get night-sweats and hot flushes throughout the day but the palpitations have been my worst menopause symptom by far. 😬

I get this too.  Sometimes just a flutter and then other times, like last night, I felt as though my heart was beating up into my throat.  Horrible 😞

Hey Bluebell - there is an idea put about - gps and consultants (not usually meno experts mind..) that the menopause lasts 5 years and then it stops and some talk about stopping womens hrt after 5 years or when they are 60 but we all know from the forum here that for some of us it starts late goes on to our 60's and then it doesn't stop!!! :-\  Sounds like that's you and you are not taking hrt either.  All those symptoms sound like low oestrogen to me. I'm 57 and will be taking hrt till I drop.  My peri symptoms were horrendous and remained horrendous for 10 years whilst being on the wrong hrt.  I've  just got a bit of life back and I wont be giving it up any time soon.  Just cos you are 65 and 6 years post doesn't  mean the symptoms will just stop.
Is there a reason that you don't take or cant have hrt Bluebell?

Agreed - palpitations can be one of the worst symptoms of menopause.  I had them in long, very scary episodes 24/7 for several years throughout peri & postmenopause, often coinciding with intense night sweats/flushing, but also at random.  Had the 24hr Holter monitor, treadmill test, echocardiogram & more - only showed harmless ectopics.  They persisted until I finally started HRT 3 years postmenopause within a few weeks of tweaking thyroid medication, so either or a combination could have resolved the palps.

Stress reduction strategies can help if employed regularly - meditation, relaxation exercises etc, but I found physical exercise seemed a challenge in that palps tended to be worse afterwards when the heart seemed to be struggling to readjust pace to a lower resting rate.  Cold weather was also a trigger & had to stop swimming as cold water sent rhythm haywire  :o

Palpitations have been discussed often before on the forum, so anyone wanting more reassurance might like to put palpitations or irregular heart rhythm or similar into the search box.  I feel for anyone who has them badly - I found them very hard to ignore & was hugely relieved when they more or less stopped a little while after starting HRT.  Big hug for anyone afflicted - they are pretty much par for the course, but nevertheless very unnerving, I know.

Hi Ladybt28, I tried HRT 3 years ago and it gave me acute anxiety and insomnia.
The Menopause nurse said we needed to tinker with it to get the proper dosage - it was Evoril patches and I wasn't too bad on half but when I went on a full patch I felt awful. She said it was the Progesterone. Anyway - I stopped it. 🤷🏼‍♀️
The Doctor is now saying to start HRT at 65 years or over trebles your risk factors.
Apart from the sweats which I'm now used to it's the palpitations that's my only bugbear. 🙇🏼‍♀️

Hey Bluebell, she was right.. tinkering at the time would have been good.  Maybe if she had been a bit more knowledgeable she could have got it right for you - I "tinkered" 4 times over 3 years before I got it right and couldn't do Evoril patches either!  Glad you can manage most of the symptoms. I couldn't and can't and no way would I even consider doing without hrt but then that's me!! Have you tried any natural "anxiety" regulation for the palpitations?  I would recommend Dormeasan oral drops by A. Vogal which is for "mild sleep disturbance bought on by anxiety".  don't let the sleep thing put you off although it works great for sleep but because it is drops you can vary the dose.  You can put up to 30 drops in about 2 inches of water and that would be a strong dose at night but if I feel panicky in the day about 7 drops in an inch of water takes the edge off but doesn't make me sleepy.  It is primarily Valarian-Hops which is known to work naturally for anxiety and sleep problems, no "nasty's" in there, but it may just have a calming effect.  Not all the products with Valaran root work the same.  I got this from a specialist health food shop.

You might have gathered from my previous posts, my peri and meno were/are horrendous and I am not adverse to trying any remedy I come across to see it it works...I don't have any health anxiety in that regard  ::) I suppose it's because I have been so desperate in the past...! but I have had this in my cupboard for 5 years or so and even though my meno meds are working if something throws me anxiety wise - it works a treat to take the edge off.

Thanks Ladybt28, I will certainly try the Dormeasan drops. I've used Vogel products before and always had peace of mind when trying them. My friend suggested I try CBD oil but the Dormeasan is much cheaper so I'll try that first.
I love coming on this forum and having ladies giving advice on products they've tried. Fab!! 👍🏼😉

Hi all

At age 42 I had regular palpitations, every day. Felt horrible and not able to ignore them, especially at night. I had 72 hr monitoring and they did find very short periods of very fast heartbeat. Prescribed beta blockers, really low dose at 2.5mg, which really did the trick. Had hot flushes, mad ones where I had to go into a room alone and take off all my clothes to cool down. After a year or so the specialist suggested I could try meditation to bring the heart rate down, which actually worked very well.  Proper relaxation guided on the iPad.

Went back on the betas 4 years later and now, 7 years after the original heart to-do, am on hrt, and feeling ok. Very occasional palpitations, once every couple of weeks.

No one mentioned hormones but I am now convinced the whole thing was blasted hormones.

We're all unique so I do hope you find a solution. If beta blockers are needed they really did work for me. Kept the tearfulness at bay, too, although I am happier on hrt.

Good luck

Prior to taking HRT I used to get palpitations. They made me a bit panicky, I think the very nature of them does that, but I got far less panicky once I realised it was a normal menopausal symptom. HRT has fixed them, I get an odd one very occasionally now.

Interesting to read about the Dormeasan drops for anxiety, might give them a whirl when I start catastrophising.

Jane and Bluebell, hope you find something that helps.

Hello ladies.

Earlier on in my menopause journey I had very strong palpitations which, as we know, make you feel terrible.

I was wondering if the internal shaking,  jittery feelings that some of us have are another version of palpitations and if so, how would we have that diagnosed? My friend gets 'the jangles ' as she calls them and would also love to understand them better. I do have Beta Blockers available but when I've taken them I don't really notice a difference.

Take care everyone.

K.
