Title: GRR! Cyclists!
Post by: Dyan on August 26, 2013, 11:42:33 AM
Just been out for my walk with my son.
We have a lovely walking area away from cars etc.
There are 2 paths, one for pedestrians and one for cyclists.
We were walking on the pedestrian path when a cyclist came tearing down towards us. My son stepped down onto the cycle path but I kept walking.
As the cyclist got level with me I looked at him and pointed to the cycle path.
He turned round and said,"this is the cycle path love"  >:(
I said," no it isn't "
I was livid. :hotflash:
A couple of days ago there were 2 cyclists, one on the pedestrian path and one on the cycle path.
The man in front of me moved out of the way to allow the cyclist to pass but I stopped and said," you should be on there" pointing to the cycle path.
He said, " yes I know, sorry, but I didn't want to bump my wheels down" :-\
At least he knew he was on the wrong path but still annoying none the less.
I'm fed up with cyclists thinking they own the road, paths, shopping centre etc.

Sorry, if this offends any cyclists out there but I just had to have a rant  and get it off my chest on here.

Another thing that annoys me about cyclists is that they think they have the right to go through a red light! >:(

That's it I think! ;D
I've had my rant of the day ;D

They can be annoying. Unfortunately up here we have very few cycle paths/lanes. Daftest lane so far is a stretch less than 50 yds long near me.  Hubby occasionally cycles to work. He mainly uses back roads, but he says it's really hard when there are so few places which are safe to cycle on.  Safer on pavements as roads are way too narrow. I used to cycle many years ago, but it was much safer back then.
However, as you have cycle paths it is very inconsiderate of folk not to use them.

The thing that annoys me about cyclists is when they are on roads, and insist on riding 2 or 3 abreast and blocking the road. It really annoys OH too, and he is a cyclist.

Maybe a word with the Authority which maintains the cycle/foot path then?  No problems here, no paths  ::) but the local Cycling Clubs do tend to ride 3/4 abreast  :o  .........

DH isn't allowed on his cycle currently as he is undergoing dental work  ;)

Does he fall off a lot then CLKD ?   :)

The cyclists share the prom with the walkers although the problem seemed to be in reverse. The walkers walk in the cycle lane which is daft.

It's not so much cyclists that annoy me as the ones on motor bikes. They say that motorists don't look out for them. Then you meet them on country roads going at twice the speed limit and on the wrong side of the road. They over take without a thought. I would ban the whole lot of them.

CLKD - We are not talking cycle/foot paths here. It's the local lanes, with no white lines, where no law applies. If there are ever vehicle collisions here, it's just put down as "knock for knock". Even when there are witnesses / photographs

If he's getting work done anyway, it might be a good time to let him out on the bike....   :whist:

I get annoyed with cyclists too - like you say they go through red lights, if car drivers did that we'd get points or be fined and they get off scot free.  >:(

I'm a cyclist but I am also a car driver and a pedestrian. ;)  My DH and DD are horseriders and sometimes use the roads.

I think ALL road users need to be more considerate to everyone who uses the roads.  A lot of people really do believe THEY are all that matters and nobody else should be on the road.

My daughter has had her knee knocked by a car wing mirror - that's how close they get to her and her horse.  Car drivers can't wait a second to get past and DH & DD always pull in to a driveway or gateway if possible so they don't slow down the traffic.  Often the worst culprits are young Mums racing along with a few kids on the back seat.

Both horses are frequently spooked by cyclists coming up from behind and not sounding their bell, they just whoosh past and this really scares the horses as they don't see or hear them coming.

Some cyclists are hell bent on getting from A to B in the fastest time and don't care that they cut people up.  Some of them also throw down their empty drink containers and walkers like myself, then go along picking them up and binning them!! ::)

We all need to be more considerate.

A BELL  :o - the Laws that apply are: a cycle must show a rear reflector, the user must have lights at night and a bell.  The times I say to cyclists who use footpaths as they whizz up behind, either SING OR USE YOUR BELL.  NONE of them has a bell fitted and I must say, that the one on my bike won't work because if I press it, the blasted thing swizzles round  >:( (note to self  ::) )

Not sure about bells being law. I've never heard a bell yet, too much background noise as a rule to hear one.

Pavement cyclists, the ones who weave in and out people.
I nearly knocked one on to the busy road as I had my back to them when the cycled up, I almost stepped out, really got a fright, but they cycled on.
It's the fact you can't hear them as they come up behind you, my friend nearly got badly injured when she bent down to tie her lace and stood up just as 2 cyclists whizzed past her, managed to pull her out of the way just in time.

Apologies to sensible cyclists, I do think that a lot take their life in their hands due to inconsiderate drivers, but they need to stay off pavements, it is a danger not only to themselves but mainly to the people walking on them.

It's against the law to ride a bike on the pavement, but where are the police? :-\
Never around to enforce it :(
If a car drove up on the path or jumped a red light the old siren would be soon on,you bet!

The same goes for dog mess.( maybe another thread here ;D)
I am a dog owner but it riles me to see that some dog owners don't bother picking it up,despite signs.
But again who is there to enforce it? :-\
We have a school nearby and that is one of the worse places for dogs mess ::)

Going off topic here- sorry!

Beside me pavements are safest place to cycle as virtually no cycle lanes and road way too narrow for cars & cyclists. I don't cycle by the way.
Police have a lot more to concern themselves with than whether someone is cycling on a pavement, unless said cyclist is cycling wrecklessly.
Maybe if there were more cycle lanes it would be OK. Down near daughter there are good sized cycle lanes which run alongside pavements. Our local council were supposed to address the cycle lane problem, but there's no space available.
