I'm in the middle of The Mountains Echoed by Khaled Hosein. Nothing to gory so far. I read Kite Runner some years ago, which was good - somewhat more graphic than the film I have to say.

I really like Lisa Gardener.

They are detectives novels and quite gritty but oh so good.

When I have one of those I can't do anything but read.

I am reading through all the Peter Robinson "Inspector Banks" series, which I really enjoy. Only a couple more to go and not sure what to read next. I do like good detective/crime fiction - might look at your Lisa Gardener novels HB - see if I might like them  :)

Really like Alexander McCall Smith, they are nice and gentle, both the No 1 Ladies Detective agency and the other series (the names of which I can't remember    ::) )

Just got into M.C. Beaton, the Hamish Macbeth and Agatha Raisin series are both very readable. Oh, and Agatha Raisin is mid fifties, so quite a lot of things ring true.

No littleminnie going to listen to it on my Kindle, I have got it recorded though, but want to listen to it first, my daughter and granddaughter ( who love the book) say the TV series is different but it is coming together now.

I thought that Under The Dome book was ok, not S.King's best though and a bit formulaic...... but the tv series is rubbish and nothing like the book, plus iffy acting.I like all books by Kate Atkinson, a brilliant writer [British] and for sheer joy and laugh out loud well written funnyness, [I defy you to NOT laugh out loud!] Mc Carthy's Bar by Pete McCarthy and also The Road to McCarthy by same author [British.] Hope you enjoy. Also just read Before I Sleep  by ??? female British writer, really good and keeps you guessing [nothing nasty in it.]

The reviews that I have have read for both the book and the TV series have been positive , from what I can gather its the creeping sense of unease that makes it so good.

I suppose its horsed for courses, for instance  I love StarTrek "The Next Generation" but the purists say its not really StarTrek, but for me Captain Jean Luc Picard is StarTrek :)

Couldn't resist this

I apologise panseypotter you were right! I did start to listening to "Under the Dome" and did not like it, it was too gory and did had bad language,

not the sort of book for listening to in bed and wanting to feel relaxed, so I returned it to Audible UK and got my "credit" back.

A book I have just finished listening to and enjoyed Is "The Chaperone" by  Laura Moriarty, read by Eliazabeth McGovern) Downton Abbey "Lady Cora"

Will tell my daughter and granddaughter I was not impressed,  can imagine what they will say ::)

there is a good selection to choose from here, I have a kindle and was browsing some of the reviews for some of your choices when I clicked onto one with high reviews which was called Forty shades of Pearl, I accidently  pressed the wrong button and I had purchased the trilogy and didn't think anything of it  I have done it before.Thought well I might as well give it a go wow, I could feel myself blushing. I haven't read fifty shades of grey cos I thought it was not my type ,I want this man Alexandre Chevalier just for a week or so  has anyone else read this.

I have recently enjoyed C J Sansom's  Shardlake series. Shardlake is an unlikely, likeable hero. He was a hunchback  lawyer in the time of HenryVIII. Very good read. I have enjoyed all of Robert Goddard's novels. But for an absolute indulgent fluffy read, I recommend Katie Fford. Brilliant for those foggy brained, low days.

Also Winterose have you tried Marcia Willett, vey similar to Rosamunde Pilcher, I have read most of her books and listened to them too, most of them are narrated by June Barry and so relaxing to listen to.

Hi jo61, I read all the Fifty Shades of Grey books and wondered how the heroine could walk straight after all the sex she'd had! I also wondered why she thought that 'stalking' her was romantic. Anyway, I for one will not be going to see the film because usually the book is better than film and as the book was passable, I don't think film is going to be any better. Read 'The Island' again by V,Hislop and loved it all over again. Also read 'We have to talk about Kevin' which made a very deep impression on me.

I haven't read fifty shades of grey, but downloaded forty shades of pearl by accident on my kindle.thought well I might as well read it. I had no idea what it was about and found myself blushing while reading it,I really enjoyed the story and at first the sex was so exciting but after a while I started skipping the sex .I told a friend whose eyesight is bad and she said she would see if it was available in audio book I don't think that is a good idea lol.

Post by: Rose on October 22, 2013, 11:23:31 PM
No don't think so jo61! After a while the sex does get boring but as there really isn't much more to Fifty Shades it's hard not to read about her "chewing her lip" which sends him off again. Anyone who has read book will know what I mean!  ::)

I loved reading 'A thousand Splendid suns' wow, what a book, I cried after, also 'Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop cafe'- a real 'chick book. A stunning read.

Two fantastic books, Valient! Have you seen the film of Fried Green Tomatoes? It's one of my favourite films.

Post by: valiantkate on October 26, 2013, 09:59:53 AM
I saw the film, it was good, and then I read the book which I think is better. I love Jessica Tandy- the elderly lady and the part when Kathy Bates ran her car into another one, oh I laughed.
I enjoyed Memoirs of a Geisha-  not one I would pick really but it was a wonderful story- history, love, hardhip, passion, jealousy- phewie. A book I read in  a weekend- I kept sneaking upstairs to just read a chapter, once agin i cried when It was finished, I always cry at a good book or beautiful music but rarely at sad stuff. I think i'm a bit strange!
I love the CJ Sansom books- medieval detective stuff, looking forward to the next one, loved the Boy in the striped Pajamas too but it was harrowing.
I like the victoria Hislop stories, I could go on....
You could say I'm a bit of a book worm!  :)

Valient, loved 'The island' by V Hislop as did all my girls. A thousand Splendid Suns is a fantastic book. Could never read about the concentration camps until I read Viktor Frankl's book 'Man's search for meaning' for my course. It's a survivors tale without any tear jerking stuff, uplifting. I will try CJ Sansom books as we seem to have same taste. Memoirs of a Geisha was great too. I thought that the film of Fried Green Tomatoes was well done as I knew the book was excellent. Such great actors.

My friend lent me the 50 shades. I found it a bit 'flat' and boring. I'm thinking of writing '46 shades of magnolia'-
' Abland tale of moderate passion, flanelette nighties and hot water bottles'
.Oh and a cup of cocoa!
