Don't think I will get to Italy but it's been fun - ish - planning :-\
Maybe a short hop to Bruges instead.
-
What a shame CLKD but Bruges is beautiful too - and all that chocolate ;) Mrs P, that looks gorgeous.
We've just booked a fortnight in Fuerteventura in September - we went last year and loved it so decided to have two weeks there this year - might be the only sun we see..... ::)
-
do you take your dog with you Mrs P ?
-
Mrs P that looks lovely. We've been looking at the Lake District for 2013, but not sure yet. Time will tell.
-
Mrs P
What a loveable and cute dog.
Used to have 2 cats - they had a long and happy life but haven't had any pets since. My OH & daughter are trying to persuade me to get a dog. Can't see it happening as don't think it would be fair if we are out at work all day. Could be persuaded if my OH takes early retirement and it was a wee cute dog and not a massive hound.
Love the look of the holiday home and in such a beautiful location.

Thought I would start the ball .....
Looking to go back to Canada for OH's birthday in June.
-
You're so lucky beaglelady, I would love to go to Canada. I've always wanted to since I was in my twenties when my brother went there. The photos were gorgeous. :)
cm xx
-
he's proper cute Mrs P.
We always take our boy. Think I would miss the beach walks with him, but I agree with what you say in that it restricts you having a dog with you.
-
Hi Beaglelady
Its the big 50 for me next yr....so am daydreaming of where to go...OH says I can choose!!! :)
Stumpy xx
-
How exciting Stumpy whats on your short list?
-
oooo well.....
New Zealand...would be divine, but the flight OMG.
So be somewhere a lot closer!!! nice beach to swtich off & read on.
Stumpy xx
-
It is a long way. 10 hours is the most I've done.
-
Me too LM & that was 3-4 yrs ago now.
Long night flights home are the worst thing ever.
-
You could fly first class then you get a seat that folds into a bed and you can sleep ...........
-
mmmmm....'he' will be paying so some serious flattery will be required for that LM!!
Stumpy xx
-
Yes Mrs P, would be Fabulous!!!
I still dont think I could do the long haul anymore though.
Stumpy xx
-
Well it's a special occasion and you can't take it with you Mrs P.
-
How true LM
:)
-
I'm still debating on this years - got to somewhere hot.
-
Im back to the isle of wright in feb as my granddaughters are getting christened on the island. Only going for a long weekend though and hopefully shall not be as scared as i was this year, the lovely thing too is that all my family will be there too.
My daughter is going abroad next year to and has asked me if i want to go with them, but i just not sure what i want to do. I have to decide soon as she will be booking it. But its going with daughter me and her do have a difficult relationship was very stressful this year and then the going abroad bit too and if i'm honest i do feel for my daughter as she has to be thinking of me and if am panicking, thats the one thing about anxiety it has made be have to be the one taken care of. My granddaughter is starting to use the panic word too i feel sad about that as she hears my daughter talking about me.
-
With this weather we are having I think a lot of people will look to see if they can afford a holiday abroad next year. Watch for the special offers from travel agancies ..
We will stay in the UK but not sure where yet. We usually think about as our holiday finishes and we're not going till September.
-
.. or have the nerve to fly :-\
-
flying makes my arms ache ;)
-
flying makes my arms ache ;)
 (http://:rofl:)
-
We are flat broke, and can't afford a hol this year. I was so hoping for a decent summer in the UK as we live by the sea/South Downs and can at least spend the weekends on the beach, picniking, barbequing etc. but... dear God this weather is so awful, and it's so depressing - endless weeks of drizzling rain, and there's no escape! My OH and me fantasise about sneaking off for a short, out of season hol, maybe 4 or 5 days off-season somewhere hot, but... I have two teenagers from a previous marriage who have absolutely NO interest in coming on hol with us (we are old, boring and embarassing, even if we could afford it!! ::)) and we simply cannot leave them at home, unsupervised, if we did manage to afford a short break. All family members are far from home, and we would need someone to feed the dog, and basically act as bouncer on the door otherwise I just know there would be wild parties, a wrecked home etc. etc. on our return - aggh, kids!
Any ideas from you guys? :)
-
lock them in a cupboard .... joke ;D
I can remember when we were in that situation. They grow and leave eventually. Better to wait and have a relaxing hols rather than one full of worry.
Any friends living near by who would 'check' on the house daily or more often? That's about all I can think of
-
We went to Cornwall earlier this year, I love it there.
-
;)
-
Hopefully we will be going to:
Norwich - to combine sight-seeing with an antiques fair in Feb..
York
Alnwick
-
Well we'd originally thought of going to the Lake District for a week. But seeing how horrid the weather has been this year and all the flooding, we've had second thoughts.
Now we're thinking of Jersey. We went to Guernsey many years ago and had a lovely holiday. Have any of you been there at all, or maybe someone on here lives there. We can fly from our local airport, think I can cope with a 2 hour flight. Much easier than the 9 hours this year!
-
Just booked our holiday in Jersey. There were only 4 seats left on the plane so had to get a move on. Phew! Now all we can do is hope for good weather come the end of August or is that asking a bit much, considering what 2012 was like? ;D
-
Norwich trip - booked!
-
cubagirl I have always wanted to go to Jersey in fact i'd love to live there. But not made it yet. Not sure i will either its not that cheap to go is it?
Of to the Isle of wright end of January cannot believe how the time has flown by since i posted that i was going. I'm scared and excited lol. Mostly scared incase we get snow or strong winds going over on a ferry is not much fun though it was very bad when we came back in june so i'm trying to tell myself it cannot get much worse.
-
Not had a foreign holiday for about 6 years due to our old dog, we did not want to leave him in kennels just in case something happened when we were away. Sadly he is no longer with us so this year we have booked our first ever cruise to the Canary Islands in April. So looking forward to some hot sunny weather.
:sunny: :sunny:

Norwich trip - booked!
Are you staying somewhere nice CLKD?
I ask because I have sent loads of people to this "secret garden" in Norwich (even locals who have never heard of it). If you're up that end of Norwich it's well worth a look.
Click on "history" and you'll read all about it. Obviously better in a few months time.

hi
I lived in Jersey for 18 years. You will love it. it should still be very warm at the end of August. loads of great places to eat out and visit but it can be expensive.
Mac
-
Thanks Mac, hubby works with someone who has holidayed there recently so hubby was asking him about it. We had a lovely holiday in Guernsey about 25 years ago and we all loved it. Apart from home sick son who thought at the age of 3 that the trip on the plane was the holiday. Soon put him right on that one! ;D
-
Thanks PennyF ...... can't remember the name of the B&B ::) think it's on the Yarmouth Road ..........
The trip to the Isle of Wight doesn't take long, I was in trepidation but sat outside, the sea was calm and I watched egrets in the mud. There were 2 dogs to pat on board too ;)
-
Taking the dog with me CLKD he comes everwhere with me, though i think my family would prefer he didn't. ;D
-
Our dog went everywhere with even, even to work ;)

We are heading over to UK and Europe for 6 weeks in May June, from New Zealand.
We've been saving furiously to travel premium economy on Air NZ, it's a treat for our silver anniversary.
Starting holiday proper in Bordeaux with river cruise; then Prague for a week, where a friend will show us the sights for a couple f days then rest of week on our own. Week 3 is Belgium, not decided which city yet but want to see just one and see it well. Hoping for one with brewery to tour.
Week 4 Cardiff, week 5 north Wales and steam trains galore, week 6 with hubby's family in Yorkshire... then home to winter.
Phew!

Where about on the Isle of Wight are you staying? We love it there, it's like stepping back in time :)

Bring some dry weather with you Coffee Cat ;D

My son and his wife went to Prague they loved it they also went to Belgium but only for a couple of days
They then went on to amsterdam son loved it dinlaw didnt dope shops she was not amused heheheh
Phew!
-
Libby Last year we stayed in Ventnor thats where most of my daughters, husbands family live. We are going to stay in West cowes this time. All the family are going.
-
CoffeeCat, I can recommend Antwerp - we went there last year around Easter. Beautiful city with plenty to see and do and very close to the Dutch border so you could pop there for a day as well if you felt inclined.
-
GroundH - how did you travel? We would like to do a chunnel trip this Spring ...........
-
How exciting Suzi Q. We weren't impressed with Belguim. The people are very serious, nothing like their Dutch neighbours. Waterloo was quite interesting if you like History.
-
Bit closer to home for us.....I have been thinking of Oban. I have not been there for many years.
Don't know whether it will just be OH and me or not.....I can live in hope......can't I.

-
Only been for a day, but it looked nice. Weather can be hit or miss though. But then again after 2012's weather nowhere is guaranteed good weather.
-
It poured when we went to Oban in the 1990s but we enjoyed it even so - except the distillery was closed :o
-
We're thinking about going over to Mallorca for a week at the end of Feb - has anyone been and if so can you recommend any good places? Not too loud and brash and we like to walk.....
-
We went to Pollenca in the North one year for a week, but we weren't overly impressed if I'm honest, too British! Son's GF went all inclusive to Santa Ponsa last October with her sister and their mum and said it was beautiful and would recommend it. Of course it depends on what you are looking for.
-
Thanks CG, I'll have a looksie at Santa Ponsa. Want somewhere a bit quiet and off the beaten track if possible - all we really need is a couple of decent restaurants and a supermarket nearby.
-
We've now pretty much decided on Brussels, as a base in Belgium, mainly because of better accommodation choices at the time we are travelling.
We visited UK for 3 1/2 weeks and Ireland (Dublin for few days) in 2010 and had a little bit of time in Wales last time so want to see more of Cardiff and of course Doctor Who (squeee!). We definitely want to get to Snowdon an there are so many steam railways up that way. All this is part of our decision to return this year but with a slightly better class of travel options, getting too old to skip the comfort lol
-
Italy this year.
-
Oh lucky you L-Minnie ;)
-
I'd like to go back to Croatia again. I really loved it. Have to see what the Old Boy says. ;)
-
I have booked a cottage in Oban for a week. I pushed the boat out a bit and got some where a bit special.
Seems a bit tame but it's what I think I will be comfortable with.
Really looking forward to it......I think.

-
Oban is lovely. Quiet once you get off the beaten track. What I like about self catering is the un-necessity of having to eat out, face people, be in crowds - getting away with a Very Good Book is a good place to begin ........ anythign after is a bonus ;)
-
PF Ah Croatia, loved it!
HB I'm sure you will love it. Do as you please, just take your time getting there. Self catering is great for just doing what you want when you want. We thought of that for this year, but decided on B&B.
-
Changed our mind about Mallorca and now going to rent a cottage up in Norfolk somewhere so we can take the dogs with us too :)
-
Look in 'pets welcome', a paperback book of places which welcome pets. We had a lovely cottage in a small village many years ago with quiet walks, not far from Swaffham
-
Thanks CLKD, think we've found one on Owners Direct, right on the coast, literally a stones throw from the (dog friendly) beach :) Just waiting for them to contact us to sort it all out.
-
I have decided that going away with family members is just far to stressful. Could not wait to come back home even though i love the Isle of wright and we even came back a day early. I'm thinking that i will try my best for just me and the dog to go somewhere most likely the Isle of wright. Just not sure how lonely i will be.
-
I don't think you will be lonely. If you have your dog, plenty of reading, magazines, bubble bath ......... you can eat/sleep/walk when you like, not having to answer to anyone.
-
If you choose somewhere with the Internet we can talk to you. :)
-
Thanks littleminnie thats a good idea. don't think i will be brave enough to go to the seaside even though i love it. Going to try what taz said in another post and go to a BB not to far away and see how i get on.
-
Packed!
Off to Norwich for a few days ........ :whist:

Lucky you CLKD, love Norwich.
Have you visited the secret garden? I only discovered when I was last there.

Will do, have found an article recently about 'the secret garden', however, Norwich are playing at home so will probably look for things to do away from Carrow Road ;D

Didn't know about The Secret Garden.
Well, if I did it wouldn't be a secret ;D
Thanks for that info CLKD.

Off home later to start packing for our week in Norfolk tomorrow. And trying to work out how the dogs list is bigger than ours....... ::)
-
;D ... great time had. Good B&B, Park and Ride, City buzzing ........ The Yellows won on Sat. ;). Now back to do the washing and plan our next trip. We went to the Castle Museum, wandered along the street with antique shops in - GREAT for browsing and chatting with like-minded people; drove out to Wroxham and round but didn't get as far as the coast - this time. Watched the snow ::)
-
Glad you had a great time CLKD, I know the Castle Museum like the back of my hand, the times we had to go and see the "mummy" :o the kids were always fascinated.
Did you see the "The Mustard Shop"?
Always loved Wroxham too.
-
Not yet - next time .........
I didn't see 'the Mummy' .......... there were however, mummifications in one of the antique places in Magadelen Street :o
-
Id like to have a week up in Oban xx

It does not rain all the time and in any case there is never bad weather.....Just inappropriate clothing.

Off again tomorrow and probably next Friday ......... Mothering Sunday soon ::) followed by Easter then ........ Norwich or Brighton for a break <phew> ;)
-
Do weekends away count as holidays? I haven't been away since October and I'm off on a trek north tomorrow to see my younger two sons at university in Leeds. I was going to stay with one of them but one is in halls and the other shares a house with 4 other lads and another friend is staying there too - the thought of 7 people sharing a (lads) bathroom where resides the only loo in the house, was too much for me! So I have booked into a hotel for a couple of nights, and looking forward to four hours to myself on the train to catch up with some reading.
Hurdity x
-
Yes they count as holidays.
Don't blame you for booking into a hotel. Don't know what your sons are like but mine who is old enough to know better is a nightmare in a bathroom so I can just imagine what it would be like X 7.
Now you get a lovely weekend without having the need to clean a bathroom.
:)

I'd be booking into a hotel too. 7 guys and 1 loo, no way. ::) If you're like me the general mess would drive me round the bend! I can't cope in a hubble.
Have a lovely time.

Hotel every time ;)

We want to go to Norwich again soon! and Wroxham Barns etc..

I don't think so Pennyfarthing, I've known about the Plantation Gardens for years when I stayed at the Beeches Hotel next to the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist,we came upon them by chance.
Its lovely area but I love the whole of Norwich and Norfolk and lived there for years.

Busy packing ready to spend a few days with Mum and DH's relations from Thursday p.m. - unless his cold gets worse or any more snow
falls . Enjoy your weekend! :foryou:
-
:-\ .......... home again.
We went to Anglesey Abbey and Holkham Hall. Busy. Lots of people enjoying themselves. Fortunately dry though very cold. However, having suggested to Mum that we could take her 'away': to places of interest that she can't get to otherwise: to which we are still awaiting a reply, I over-heard her on the 'phone to my nephew extolling the places we are going to take her .......... :o >:(
-
I have spent 3 hours - so far - trying to find either B&B or self catering for 3 people. Us 2 and my Mum. In Dorset. I don't want a B&B that has a small 'single' room - wouldn't want anyone to feel that they are being pushed out of the party so to speak. The same with self catering, some suggest that they have 2 bedrooms but really the spare is only large enough for bunk beds or clothing :(. The place needs to be around a specific area, naturally any near Weymouth are full already. Popular area of course. Don't want to go as far as Bournemouth. Nor down to Lyme. <sigh>
-
When do you want to go CLKD?
Taz x
-
We haven't decided yet. Sooner rather than later as my anxiety levels are rising even though nothing is fixed. :-\
Every place I think would be suitable is already, according to the web-sites, booked up. So will whittle places down and ring the owners in case the web-sites are incorrect. Or they have cancellations.
-
Have you had a look on this site? http://www.ownersdirect.co.uk/weymouth.htm
Taz x
-
What about Swanage? :) x
-
Where are you going from CLKD?
Taz x
-
Kingston Courtyard in the Purbecks but quite expensive and also Studland YHA/YMCA Sandyholme, I think its called. A friend of mine stayed there with her family?
-
our gate
-
SuziQ ???
We want to visit Moreton Church and surrounding area. For 8 years I have holidayed without anxiety. As soon as I decide to take Mum with us, it starts. I can even feel the woozy head and light headedness starting - I know that I have medication if all else fails, must buy new R Remedy too. Perhaps she will say she can't go :-\ ......... that was the excuse previously, that she wouldn't leave her house. Have spent 4 hours on the net and have found 5 suitable self-catering properties .......... so that's a start ::)
-
You're anxious because you don't want to let her down - it puts pressure on us when others are involved. I also find that as well as worrying that I might get ill with a bug when away, if there are others with me, I worry about them getting something too. Daft way to be!!
Taz x
-
Taz that is quite a lot like myself. She's very manipulative too but I think whilst away, she would be different. Although we will get a lot of 'when Dad and I were here last' - like in Holkham Hall on Sunday it was "I've never been in this room before" : now the last time I was there with her was when I was 8 ::) ........... what exactly she wanted me to do about it .......... "calm; calm; calm;"
-
DH has told me to stop looking for accommodation in Dorset and I am writing to Mum today to tell her the idea is shelved for the time being. :-\ It really isn't worth putting my health at risk again. I was doing SO well. <sigh>
-
Perhaps just arrange to take her for days out CLKD.
Your hubby is right there is no point in putting your health at risk. Your intentions were good and your heart in the right place.
Rest up and plan something for just you and hubby.

Thanks Honeybun. Have sent off a letter in the post this moment, explaining the difficulties I have had trying to find somewhere for 3! and also, info about 'wild flower mats' which we talked about at the weekend. Mum wants to have less work and thinks a wild flower area would be pretty ............. tummy still tight though :-\
-
CLKD it's not worth getting het up about - you tried your best.
Seem to remember your mum hasn't been easy......
It would be so stressful going away together

Off on hols tomorrow birthday soon!

Mum seems to be understanding that we can't go away, she was quite sociable on the 'phone this morning and told me to get on with my retirement and to enjoy myself with DH :o phew  I still feel slightly anxious though ::)
-
We're already had our holiday this year. We went to Florida in January. Am about ready for another one now though :spin:
-
So where would you choose to go?
-
I'm looking for somewhere for the 2 of us to go in France for a week in July. OH would like to go somewhere different from where we usually go (Basque Country where we have friends). Countryside maybe with a pool, not too expensive! I've got exhausted with looking online.
We are going in May to a friend's house in France and I can't wait. May not be that sunny, but likely to be at least 20 degrees with sun some days.
I can't take much more of this awful weather ::)
-
So where would you choose to go?
Oh somewhere like Haven would be nice. Plenty for our LO to do and we could explore a part of the UK we've not seen before :)
-
LO? ???
We like - Northumberland around Craster, Anwick, Bamburgh; Sussex, particularly Brighton and Lewes; North Norfolk coastline is nice, Cromer, Sheringham, in-land to Holt.
As for France - DH loved Annecy last June ;)
-
LO Little one :)
Sorry, so used to posting abbreviations x
-
You've done a lot more exploring than we have, lucky you :) I fancy somewhere in Scotland actually. Have never been there and I hear its beautiful

It is Evanstar....

A bunagalow called Killimanjaro not far from Dornie, the village where Eilen Donan stands ........ on the west coast. Driving from Glasgow, turn left into Glen Coe and the World changes. Scenery to die for. We had 4 days on the Isle of Skye, everyone sunny and we ran out of words to describe the beauty. The following week the road between the Bridge and Portree was washed away :o
The North Norfolk Coast; Sussex; Northumberland; Wales; the Lake District; Derbyshire; Plockton ......... if we get the weather the UK is the bestest place to be
-
The West Coast is the prettiest but then again I would say that.
I love seeing all the islands on our coast and to me just open sea looks so strange.

Open sea can be weird and a bit scarey. I too like the water broken up a bit, usually on the Cambrian Coast it's broken up by dolphins :-*
-
My lovely husband has booked us a holiday :) Not until September but he thought it would be nice to have something to look forward to - he's so thoughtful sometimes :) Off to Fuerteventura again - we love it there and always stay in the same resort although this time he's booked a different apartment.
-
You enjoy! I think once we have found a destination we are comfy with: and once we have done the sightseeing, it's time to soak up the warmth and ambiance of our choosen area ;)
-
Off to Norwich again next week so have spent the afternoon looking on the net for stuff to do - have printed off LOADS and none of it weather dependant. Should be meeting up with an internet friend for the first time who I have been in contaact for years, who will be in the City at the same time as us!
Thought last week that I would know what to pack >:( ::)
-
I've just booked fancy restaurant for when we're in Jersey. Always struggle to find something for Hubby's birthday. Never knows what he wants, blah blah. So that's his birthday sorted. Hope it's as good as reviews make it out to be!
-
We're going to Northern Portugal in June and I'm looking forward to it. Never been before but it looks like we'll enjoy it. :)
-
Well we started the year with such big ambitions, holiday wise. But now it doesn't look like we can go away at all :(
We have my hubbys mum living with us, and he's her full time carer, pluse we have 3 dogs, 2 cats and marine fish, all of wich take some looking after, in the past my daughter and his have shared the chores which wasn't too bad, but they have now both moved out to their own places and even though his daughter will come to look after things (it is her nan) after some trouble recently (long story on the private forum) my daughter has said she doesn't want to help with his mum at all again. unfortunantly his daughter can only ever do 6 days at a time, as she works regular nights which somprise of 7 on 7 off. So the cruise we wanted is out the window, mainly because (it's 12 days) most of it is on her working week. But i've got my lovely memories to live on :)
Hope you all have fab times wherever you go, and if anyones thinking of taking a cruise and needs any advice just ask away and if I can help I will.
xx
-
That's a shame Joyce. Have you thought about putting your mum-in-law into respite care while you are away? My neighbour does this with her husband - she is his full time carer - and she goes off on a cruise and comes back ready to tackle the next six months.
Taz x
-
My mum did that when my step father was alive. She was happy that he was being taken care of and I visited him while she was away.
It worked really well. In Scotland the elderly are entitled to six weeks respite in a year.
Honeyb
X
-
We have looked into it, but it's nearly as dear as the holiday, then we'd have to put the cats ina cattery and the dogs in kennels, so not much change from £2000 really. Also I don't think she'd want to go, and then hubby would have the guilt if he made her, which wouldn't make the holiday very relaxing for him :(, she moans if we go out for a couple of hours, and one of the reasons my daughter doesn't want to look after her again, is that last time she did nothing but moan about being on her own in the day, and mithering about when were we coming back.
xx
-
Is there no other family that could help.
My mother is a trial but at least sis and I share her and help each other as and when.
Could you not consider a break in this country. Perhaps if she were in respite for a short time your daughter would see to the pets......at least they won't mind.

My neighbour has the same problem with her husband - he never wants to go and sulks dreadfully for the weeks beforehand. Sadly being ill can make people incredibly selfish and only focused on their own needs. Once there he is ok. You are entitled to a life and you have been married such a short time.
Did you discuss all of this before you married - it is really important that you do get a break from caring. As he is her full time carer I suppose he gets all the allowances he is entitled to? Is so then you may be eligible for the respite care to be paid for. I'm not sure if you have checked out this possibility? http://www.nhs.uk/CarersDirect/yourself/timeoff/Pages/Accessingrespitecare.aspx My friend gets her husband's care paid for plus a sum towards her own holiday.

You could perhaps have a look at one of the 'pet sitting' companies? Those that come into the home and live with the animals? Although it is easier to remain at home, you and DH should get out and about during the day. Start be seeing if there is a 'sitting' Agency in your area, ask at AgeUK or social services or even in the local village 'rags'. People when ill get worried that their needs won't be met and there might be a certain amount of "I could do that if I wasn't ill" mentality.
Will be busy packing on Sunday ;)
-
thanks for that Taz, i'll take a look later.
CLKD, she's not ill, she's just a bit slow and needs a stick (she's 89) and unfortunatly, the more huuby has done for her over the years the less she has done for herself, she's like billy whizz if she thinks she's in on her own, we've come back sometimes if we've forgotten something, or if i'm in the front room and she thinks we've both gone out, and we'v e caught her lol
-
;D .........
Must think about what to pack :o ........ will have a look at the weather on Sunday evening ::)

Have as good holiday!

:thankyou: case half packed ::) - stick insects to clean out next .......

Have a smashing holiday! :sunny:

Watch none end up in your suitcase CLKD. Daughter brought stick insects home from school when she was about 10. I ended up looking after them. Took them back after the summer holidays. Should have seen the teacher's face. She expected them to die. Wish she'd told me that. I fed them on neighbours privet, not wanting to disappoint children ;D
-
;D ...... stick insects (28 of them) are safe in their tank ::)
Case not packed yet :o

Three weeks yesterday and I am off for a week. I so need a break and have already decided I cant go a whole year without another break away from things so intend to go somewhgere in September October time.
My anxiety may play me up for the actual getting away bit but I am going.
Have a lovely time CLKD.

Thank you. Rescue Remedy and BBs to hand ;) ....... keen to get going before anxiety sets in but we are returning to the B&B we used in Feb. and will be freely able to choose where and when we go sightseeing :D

Have a great time :)

So far so good. Drove straight to the beach at Caister on Sea on Monday, sun came out as we walked on the sand ...... we have been out and about, mainly looking for antiques. We met up with freinds for a meal on Tuesday evening ....... lots still to do in the area so will need to return later in the year. Off to spend a few days with Mum and back home on Sunday ready to babysit next week :D
Sharp showers and warm sunshine although the wind is COLD unless I am in the shelter.

Enjoy the rest of your holiday CLKD

I tell you what .... I am so glad I booked a weeks holiday in Portugal in June. SO glad. The weather I just had on my mid-week break was dire and I was wearing layers and layers of clothes. I think we all deserve to feel a little warmth on our bones at least once a year. :)

Poured most of Friday. Now it's sunny and warmer. HOME :bounce:

Isle of Man anyone? Neighbour has given me a T-towel from his recent visit and it's enthused me ::) ....... now to getting there :-\

Isle of Man. Went there last year. In August. It bucketed it down. Nicest thing to say about it is that it has had it's day!

How did you get there?
-
We've been looking at Croatia again for September. Porec is where we went last time in 2007.
We are also looking at Lake Bled in Slovenia, we prefer self catering. I have spent blooming hours on the internet in the last few days.
-
I've never been to Croatia but two of my sons went to lake Bled last year on separate occasions interrailing last year and loved it and said to us we should go. It looks and sounds lovely.
Hurdity x

a friend went to bled and said it is very beautiful
-
We stayed in Cavtat, Croatia a couple of years ago and absolutely loved it. It was peaceful, beautiful and the scenery was stunning. It's just a short boat or bus ride from Dubrovnik so you get the best of both worlds.
-
Hotel Croatia in Cavtat by any chance Pennyfarthing? ;) We went for a week beginning of September a few years back. It was lovely, great weather and hotel was good too. So near to Dubrovnik, which is lovely. We did a few trips. One to Mostar.

How did you get there?
I flew to the Isle of Man. Stayed in Douglas (in a promenade hotel - room on the fifth floor - no lift!!!! - check this when you book). Not a good holiday all round!

Cubagirl - we stayed at the Iberostar Epidaurus which if you keep walking as far right as you can through Cavtat, you will come to. It's the very last hotel and in a lovely quiet spot.
-
Ah, know where, I think. A nice quiet bay. We loved it there, nice place to chill out. Some lovely little bars and restaurants too.
-
OK, all booked up. We are going to Croatia in September, we are staying in a hotel in Porec & it is right on the waterfront by the harbour. It is a stroll from the old roman town. There are some lovely little bars & restaurants there if I remember rightly, where we can sit & watch the posh yachts moor.
We can get a day trip ove the Adriatic Sea to Venice which we hope to do.
Oh I can't wait now.

Lovely! I actually believe I could live there - I just loved the whole feel of it. Have a fantastic time and let us know all about it.
When we were in Cavtat we got talking to a woman who was hurrying around the headland. She was on a cruise ship which had dropped them off at Dubrovnik and they'd had a short coach ride down to Cavtat. She asked us a few questions about Cavtat and I asked her why she was in such a hurry and she said "because it is so beautiful and I WISH we had longer here. I am trying to see as much of it as I can before the coach leaves again. I don't want to leave actually." She said when she got home she was going to book a holiday in Cavtat and I often wonder whether she did. :)

This all sounds lovely! I think I'd like another holiday already!

How are you Honeybun?

Mostly packed, but just been hit with a bit of a bomb shell. My daughter now can't make up her mind if she is coming with us or not. She has till 10pm to make up her mind. She thinks she may be bored. I have to say I am less bothered than I thought I would be. She was never asked she just decided she wanted to come.
It's really up to her. If she comes then fine I'd she doesn't then that's fine too.
Nothing is simple it would seem.
Just looking forward to a rest.

So what's her decision? I remember offering our daughter holiday when she was about 19. She thought it wouldn't be cool, so stayed at home. She was miserable & wished she'd gone.
-
She is not coming with us so now I am sitting here feeling a bit funny about it.
If we had internet access then I think she would go but we don't. I do think she would be bored but I wish she had said something sooner. It's just a bit of a bolt.
She is going to wonder what has hit her but her brother will be here some of the time.
Oh well.

My partner and I are starting to think about booking a holiday for October (I've got a week booked off then, also one in August but everything will be too expensive then!!). I'm hopefully about to sell my 'marital home' and get my share of the equity (I was divorced last September) so we've decided we will use a little tiny bit of that to have a week's holiday. We're pretty hard up so it's all quite exciting. We need to get the most we can from our money!
Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions: we want somewhere pretty, with good food, that will at least be warm in October, if not hot (Lee's not mad keen on really hot weather!), some sea, architecture, good coffee and cheapish! I noticed some discussion of Croatia. My son was there at a music festival last Summer and said I would love it there, he said it's like being on the Med but loads cheaper. What do you think?
Thanks! x
-
We certainly had a lovely week in Croatia. Low to mid 70s beginning of September. We booked online. Shop around, which I'm sure you will.
-
Back from our week in Oban. First holiday on our own for 24 years. It was so peaceful.
It is the most beautiful place. The weather was really good. We lazed around and did lots of sight seeing.
Can't believe the week went so quickly.
The scenery is quite breath taking. Don't want to be back home but hey ho back to normal.

Ladies I'm off to our friend's villa in Spain tomorrow for 2 weeks. It will be hubby's 60th while we are out there ;) Feeling nervous and have had stomach cramps for days now worrying about every little detail - have i booked the right date, have I filled all the flight details in correctly, have I booked the car parking, have I booked the car hire for all the right dates and times ::)
Have I provided enough food for son to cook and eat, has he listened to a word I've said about what needs doing and when - I doubt it.
Hubby leaves all the booking to me and then on the day - it's 20 questions "What time are we flying - when do we need to be at the airport - which car park do we park in - who's the car hire company .... on and on which makes me really anxious. I keep saying I'm going to leave it up to him to book everything next time and see how he feels - I won't though ;D
Once we're there and I'm happy everything is OK at home I'll be fine.
See you all in 2 weeks

I end up doing holiday bookings now. If I've told hubby holiday dates once, I've told him a hundred times. My Hubby's excuse for not doing bookings is that he doesn't have time, though he has time to play computer games. Hey ho.

Mum is slowly starting to feel a bit better after all her stays in hospital/shingles etc so yesterday we discussed the idea of going away for a few days. I've booked us a nice static caravan up on the Suffolk/Norfolk border for 3 nights in a couple of weeks time - she's thoroughly looking forward to it :) Just me and her although my youngest sister might come up for the day on the Friday :)

You enjoy! Hopefully the weather will have settled again. Sitting. Chilling. Chatting. Dozing ...... will do you all good ;) - there's places to visit up there too .........
-
Thanks CLKD, Mum's really looking forward to it. Already looked at boat trips nearby that are wheelchair accessible so that's a possibility, much will depend on the weather of course. I'm not expecting it to be a holiday for me - this is for Mum, she's been through so much this year she really deserves a nice break :)

It's been too hot to take our camper anywhere ::) - yet!

At this rate you will be using it in the snow. Does it not have air con?
The call of the open road seems to be ignored at the moment CLKD.
Dust off that passport and get out there. ;)

Yes - get out there CLKD. Friends with their camper van have been out every weekend. They love the coast - really cool breezes. Take a fan!
Taz x
-
Our town is full of camper vans from all over the world. We were stuck behind a convoy of 6 of them yesterday and they were all from Belgium. They were beautiful and all had bikes on the back.
In our last house which was on the sea front we used to get them parked up opposite the house. It was funny watching them pottering about in their jammies in the morning.
The freedom must be great. Just stick a pin in the map and off you go.
Honeyb
X
-
Not as much freedom as one would think - the World, his Wife and Dog are out there too ;D ...... so booking is, these days in the UK, essential. We do have aircond.. But I can't be out and about in such heat so going anywhere would be a waste - we like to up and doing when we visit somewhere.
Going to see Mum in the morning :-X - not in the camper this time. Be back Friday ???
-
You need to head for the coast in the hot weather CLKD - the sea breeze makes a lot of difference.
Taz
-
The World and his Wife are there Taz
Back from visiting with my Mum (phew)
-
The world and his wife are most definitely not up our coast line.
It all depends on where you go. There will be the big tourist destinations and then the miles and miles of empty coast line and the peace that it brings.
I think you are still trying to get used to your new van CLKD and are not ready for adventures as yet.
Hope you get used to it and get to enjoy it soon.

We are using it but not for over-nighters - yet. Too many other issues in our Life :( ..... back from a visit with Mum, then we have baby sitting commitments and someone wants to do supper as a 'thank you' for something we did: but it isn't really necessary but you know how it is ;) - so 3 evenings next week are taken up already ............. then our garden is keeping us busy.
We have on the list though: Brighton, West Wales, Paisley, Castleton ........... :whist:

Oh well.
You need to watch where you park your van or it could become static....ie no wheels. ;D
Honeyb
X
-
My reaction was the same as honeybun!!!
But you are pretty close to Loch Lomond and the trosachs, both worth a visit....and Glasgow, but yes, watch where you park!!!
-
We were in Paisley yesterday for a funeral. It sure hasn't changed. Take care parking though. Some bits of Paisley area are ok though. I used to stay on outskirts, between Paisley & Glasgow, it was fine, but hated going into Paisley itself. Loch Lomond, Trossachs both beautiful and well worth a visit.
-
I can park on my friend's drive: where he parked his 'van for years. We already 'know' how beautiful that area is: we always say, get to Glasgow, turn left and onwards: into the beautiful scenery :-*

We were there for a lovely week in June.
There are some great places to visit. If you want some ideas then let me know.
If you like seafood then the Seafood Shack on the pier is a must.
Great shops and scenery to die for. We are about a three hour drive away. The roads there are a bit slow but lovely scenery but nothing prepares you for the sight of Oban Bay as you drive down the hill into the town.
Oh I could go on.....but I will restrain myself ;D

Thanks HoneyB , Will try that place , love seafood , cant wait to go there , we are staying at Traylee holiday park , its near the beach at Benderloch .

It's lovely there.
The seafood shack is the one that's furthest down the pier not the ones that are outside the shops.
Don't forget to visit Seil Island. You go over the original Atlantic bridge to get there. The views are stunning.
We rented a cottage for a week. There is a great pub called The Barn. It's on the road north out of Oban. The folly is hard to find although you can see it but it's worth the hunt as the views are wonderful.
Enjoy.

Edinburgh is lovely, great shops. Don't be put off by the building of the tramline, though. You can get bus from airport right into centre of Edinburgh, only £3.50. Well it was last time I went on the airport bus. Much cheaper than taxi and only about 20 minutes.

Off to Lowestoft tomorrow with Mum for her mini-holiday - the weather forecast is looking great for us as well :) 8)

Mum and I had a lovely break - the weather was great and the holiday park was quiet. No amenities so no kids - sea wall walk right at the end of the park that took us all the way into town. We even managed a river cruise on Oulton Broad on the Friday - Mum really enjoyed herself and we'll definitely do it again next year :)

The thing is you'll get a better view from the TV!
Several years ago we set off from Chester to watch the F1 at Brands Hatch, yes quite a few years ago.
We arrived at about 5.30 in the morning, pootled about, were driven around the track, had fresh doughnuts etc.
All went well till F1 cars started, they were SO loud, felt sick, couldn't hear Concorde or Red Arrows flying overhead. :o
We ended up driving back to Chester and watching on TV ::)

My hubby loves F1. He has in the past travelled all over the world to watch.
For him the noise is the very best part. There is no accounting for taste.
I would be running in the other direction ::)

Away on my hols tomorrow. Yippee! Though have had to juggle luggage as plane we are going on only allows very small hand luggage. Thankfully I still had old small ones which are within limits. Thought I was going to have to buy new hand luggage. Phew! Be good while I'm away. ::) ;D
-
Have a great time CG! We just bought new cases to Ryanair specification only to hear that another budget airline has reduced the size of hand baggage even further. No doubt Mr O'Leary will do the same so our cases will be no good >:( We only take hand luggage so it will be a struggle to fit 2 weeks wotth of kit into even smaller cases.
We are off on Tuesday - to Spain again with friends this time.

Hubby does archery so we use the camper for day competitions.
MotoGP is motor bike racing, Valentino Rossi and Cal Cructchlow - both doing well :-* :-*
We may have a wander over to the Cirtcuit tomorrow anxiety allowing :-X
We spent a few weeks looking at the Celebration VW T5 but DH could not reach the handbrake as the seats were too high, maybe the leisure battery and swinging platform to mvoe the seat was underneath. Weather was brilliant whole week - mid 20's most of the time. Lots of walking, just as well as we ate lots of fab food. Best meal though was at Mark Jordan's place. Except for the anxiety attacks <sigh> ....... but will push on!
-
Do you know which bit you are anxious about CLKD? Being away from home? In a small space? Having an accident on the road? You might be able to narrow it down and try to tease it all out.
Taz
-
Anxiety isn't logical. So don't know what the trigger is .......... I do know that whereas anxiety used to strike when I was away from the house and here was a sanctuary, once the panic happened in the house no-where is safe <sigh>
But I will lay out what is required for the remainder of the week tomorrow, buy a few items required in the camper and ......... DH is going fishing with his brother and wife, I want to sit and read, wander, chill ..........
-
I just thought that the trigger for this particular bout has been the camper van so which part of going away with the van are you uncomfortable with?
I know what you mean about somewhere that was safe no longer feeling safe. This is what happened to my son and led to him finally taking anti depressants via the local mental health team. It was here that the dangers of the benzo drugs such as Ativan etc. were explained to him. A short term fix for a long term problem was how it was explained. He is doing well now - back to normal - but it was also explained that after a few years on one type of anti d he would probably have to change to a different one as it would cease to be as effective and the anxiety attacks could begin again.

I went to Majorca for a week all inclusive in July 8) (hubby couldn't get time off and other 2 kids in school so just my elder son and I - he's 17 and was surprisingly good company!! laughed loads!)
I had a glorious almost 2 weeks in Devon in summer holidays 8)

Might be sunny in October, you never know your luck.

We can live in hope!

There, I've just jinxed it! ;)

We came back in the rain yesterday from a couple of days away. I don't like being on busy motorway when it's lashing with rain, even though OH was driving :o Had a headache when we got in, kind of wrecked the relaxing time we'd had :-\
-
I HATE motorways .......
It turned very cold on Thursday and wet - so spent a couple of hours in an underwater zoo type place ........ then the rain dried up for the evening. DH has been fishing with his bro., they were surprisingly successful :clapping: ....... although I don't like fish much being as it was straight from sea to plate it was delicious.
Warmed up on Friday - went to Holt for the day. Fished in the evening.
Stopped by to see Mum for 24 hours on our way back. Home .......... but who did a wash with a tissue in the jeans pocket >:( :P
Ferry Meadows soon :)
-
Good your'e back safe
Did you have a nice / good time?
-
Is an "underwater zoo type place" an aquarium?
-
;D ;D
I kind of wondered about that one.

:thankyou: Limpy - yep, no anxiety :-* and apart from the weather it was a lovely break
:thankyou: Taz - yep, acquarium springs to mind ......... fishes large and small, sea-horses :-*, weird music supposedly atmospheric - not ::) .........
-
Hurdity - how do you manage with damp washign etc. whilst away?
-
:thankyou: I have a round peg thingy but no where - yet - to hang it ::)
There are dryers on site but we weren't on site long enough to explore the drying room
Haven't bought an awning - yet ......... :whist:
-
If you are only there a couple of nights take 2 bath towels each, after your first shower but them in a bin bag and throw them in the boot of the car and deal with them when you get home. They will be ok for a night. When start going for longer get one of those camping whirligigs. Simples.
-
We have a camper van ;) so have to keep damp stuff away from the rest otherwise at this time of year the whole area feels cold. Black sacks will be useful .............. wellies, wet socks, smelly fishing gear ........
-
Ah yes, that wouldn't work then. Unless you take the car as well to put the wet clothes in. Lol
-
TREY - where you been? ??? 6 days on the road ..........
-
smelly fishing gear ........
Haha I have one of those!! Husband who likes fishing. Most of the smelly stuff goes on from near where we live fortunately (ie not much in the van) - come back with buckets full of mackerel or bream or various others and they all have to be gutted. Tasty though. Are yours sea fish or river/reservoir?

Last week it was the East Norfolk Coast so eels and bass. He has access to occasional fly fishing for trout and has a river Licence for pike. Oh the smell :sick02: ;D
-
Got back from Fuerteventura on Saturday morning (wee hours) and tomorrow we're off to Holland for the weekend - parents-in-law's 50th Wedding Anniversary so a big family party. We get back on Sunday evening and poor hubby has to go to Turkey on Monday for a convention ::)
-
Gosh your feet haven't touched the ground!
Turkey ....... emmm - too close to Syria for my liking although a friend went recently and said the area they were in was quiet enough. She loves it there.
Off tomorrow for an over-night stay near peterborough :-\
-
Got back from Oban , was lovely would certainly go again , lots of places I wanted to see and ran out of time , weather was kind to us to.

Welcome back from Oban! How was the weather? When we went in the early 90s it was alternate days of rain and sun ::)
-
How can you remember the weather after 20 years. ;D
I can't remember last weeks.
-
Must have made quite an impression for one reason or another.
I remember 2 weeks of wall to wall sunshine 40 years ago whilst on holiday in Arran. Great holiday! ;)
-
Thankyou for the welcome back , The weather was dry, a couple of sun/cloudy days , loking forward to our next trip away .

We got back from Croatia last weekend. Had a fantastic time & the weather was great - not too hot so just right.
The hotel was fab, right on the harbour, although the view from our bedroom was not very good - a brick wall about 10 feet away, still we couldn't afford a view of the Adriatic.
We went on some lovely walks along the coastline & a boat cruise down the coast.
Came back thoroughly refreshed & relaxed ............... & then got a stinking cold. I knew I would because there were a lot of people coughing & sneezing on the plane going over.
-
We were wondering whether to try Croatia next year. What's the food like?
-
Very good food.
In the north (Istrian Peninsula) it is influenced with Italian food. Lots of past dishes, lovely pizzas. The area is famous for truffles so again there are some dishes with that in. I didn't like the smell of truffles so didn't try them (it's a marmite thing, you either love them or hate them).
You also get Slovenian dishes too. Our favourite was Cevapacci (grilled dish of minced beef).

Pork, Venison, Veal & beef are all available.
Being by the Adriatic Sea there is plenty of fish. Hubby had catfish one evening which he said was one of the best things he had eaten.
I thoroughly recommend it littleminnie - it is the perfect holiday resort - well so long as you are not too bothered about the beaches as they are normally made out of rocks/boulders.
This is the area we stayed in.

Ooh I love Italian food. Thanks for that Cazikins.
-
We off back to Cyprus next Wednesday, we booked it last minute, well two weeks ago anyway, we're going to celebrate our annerversary 24 years.
It's a lovely Hotel 5 star and all inclusive and the food is so good, I just hope I feel better as at the moment I feel completely knackered, Even having a shower this morning exhausted me, maybe my ms fatigue is back, but keep getting more flushes that just seem to last for ages. So nothing today except eat and drink, luck my hubby is good at cooking and housework!
-
Take a couple of days to pack that case and enjoy Smokey and :congrats:
Croatia is very popular. If I was a flyer I would go there!
Back now .........
Oh the remembering of the rain in Oban - I had a cocker then and she was either very damp or very dry ;D ............ one day it blew a gale and she refused to get out of the car .........
-
Thanks CLKD I shall.
I wish I could take the plunge and fly further, my hubby wants to go to the cape verde island but I'm always worrying I'm going to be unwell, should have gone before all this meno lark!
-
I dont think the Cape Verde islands aren't much further than Cyprus.
Someone at work went last year and loved it.
-
According to Travel Math it's four and a half hours to Cyprus from Heathrow and just over six hours to Cape Verde.
I really envy you ladies who can still travel - I'm finding it increasingly difficult to even do my trip to my favourite place - something I used to do at least once a month thinking nothing of the 360 mile round trip. I'd often go just for the day but now so many worries and "what ifs" creep in that I don't go.
Taz x
-
Oh Taz! I drove this morning for the first time in months ::) ......... had to go buy DH some presents. Was aware of how much traffic/noise/idiots there are on the roads even more this morning!
4 hours is a lot shorter than 6 ;) plus booking in time and waiting for the cases at the other end.
-
I don't mind waiting for the cases because it means the flight is over.
What sort of 'what ifs'?
-
Mainly "what ifs" about health. It seems to take longer to get over even ordinary bugs now I have reached late fifties so it puts me off going especially as I like to go alone. It's part of generalised anxiety disorder. It's always there but if everything in life is going ok then I can keep it under but if other things become stressful then the underlying part rears up again.

-
I think we build up a resistance as we age, so you will 'grow out of' this Taz ;). For a while in my 40s I seemed to have cold after cold after ::) but within 2 years of my 50s I didn't have any. You are feeling the effects of your current long-term infection and the 'bug'. Once that is over you will pick up :foryou:
-
Can't see how that works but thanks for the optimism CLKD? How old do I have to be to "grow out of it"
Taz x ;D
-
Once you get in your 80's you'll be fine. :)
-
:crutch: :crutch: :crutch:
-
Once you get into your 80s you get constipated, well men seem to do ;D
-
On the plus side your memory will have gone so you won't remember what you were anxious about. ;D
-
;D
Well, I was in my early 50s ;) .......... as for memory, didn't we have a thread about that here somewhere ::) or did I imagine that too!
Off again at the weekend, Duty Visit this time :( - you will have Peace and Quiet for a few days ;)
-
We are going away for a few days :bounce: ...... looks like snow though ;D
-
Where are you off to? No snow forecast up here.
-
N/w of Lincoln ;) in the camper. Have also booked B&B in Lewes for mid-December 8)
-
Sounds lovely but .....ooh aren't you going to be cold in the camper? Maybe you have a heater as it's a luxury one ;) !! We had our last campervan trip at half term - end of October and don't fancy it at this time of year - but ours is old school....! Have fun

There is blown air heating run from the diesal engine on a thermostat. I woke cold once in the early hours, that is, once I actually got to sleep! An owl, outside ::) …………. spent 8 hours in and out of antique shops ;) - home now.
-
DH is taking me to Sussex next week, leaving on Sunday :-* so must sort out medication to take before the anxiety sets in. Back mid-week ;)
-
Home ;) : back from Lewes and Brighton, called in for a light-lunch at Petworth on the journey home:
away again on C.mas Eve though :-X
