Title: War Horse
Post by: Jillymoo on January 14, 2012, 12:17:02 AM
Hi  :)

Just back from seeing War Horse tonight and I can't even begin to describe how absolutely fantastic this film is,on so many levels!

Moving,scary,breathtaking,thrilling,upsetting,unforgettable  :o

The scenes of the fighting on the Somme were so 'real',you couldn't believe they were just a re-enactment.Even the sets and the music were fabulous.

I hope this film cleans up at the next Oscars,it so deserves to.

Shan't sleep tonight. . . . .

xx

No point me trying as I would howl throughout!  :'( However, Speilberg's films are always brilliant.

Have got a hot date with my hubby tonight - thought we would hit the cinema then go into Edinburgh for a nice dinner. We can't decide between war horse or Sherlock Holmes. Heard lots of good things about both movies. Xxx

In one way I'd like to see it and in another (we have horses ourselves) I wouldn't.

I think DD and myself would howl all the way through it. :'(  I'm well aware of the valuable work horses (and other animals) did during wars but it's actually seeing it rather than reading about it.

Pennyfarthing. . . . if you actually have horses,I would advise reading the book and staying away from the film  :(

The scenes of mass slaughter,of both horses and men (and boys) are extremely harrowing.I don't know how they filmed it,but just so realistic. My friend has horses and I've advised her the same.

Two people had to leave the cinema last night, too upset at some scenes...... :-\

Those of you who do go though, you'll never forget it.I'm off to town no to find the book.

There is good detail here as to how Stephen Spielberg achieved the battle scenes without stressing the horses. I am not sure if it gives too much away of the story though. You can scroll down to Painting a picture of safety http://www.americanhumanefilmtv.org/on-the-set-war-horse/

Our first ever date was the cinema. I thought he would take me to see a romantic film. Wrong! We went to see A Bridge Too Far.
Should have known what I was marrying  ::)

I have seen this at the theatre in London and I cried all the way through it.  I want to see the film but am sure I will show myself up by crying so I might wait a while.

I don't know what it is just lately but anything to do with animals especially dogs has me in floods of tears often for no good reason.

My first date was the cinema too, but for the life of me I cannot remember what it was.  I must have been too busy in back row!   ;D ;D ;D

It would be different if we knew it was just a film but we know that so many horses perished in the wars and that makes it so hard to watch.

hi ladies,
i have just read the book and found it excellant. Will i be disapointed if i see the film? how close is the film to the book. What i would also love to know is how did they do it on stage? Not wanting to spoil the story for those who have not seen the film or read the book yet but is the film and stage play through joeys eyes and words?

Thoroughly enjoyed the film. It was a mix of emotional, funny and heart stopping.
Glad I saw it and hope it gets the rewards it deserves.

Thank you so much for that Taz,very interesting indeed  :)

I bought the book today.....got the last copy in our Waterstones, the assistant said the book had just taken off after the publicity for the film, not surprisingly.

Can't wait to start it.

the book was for sale last time I looked for £3.99 in my local supermarket..the S one. I haven't read it. Am wary of the film as don't feel like howling buckets and snorting into tissues right now. We thought of going last weekend but it was sold out. Last film I went to was The Artist, which was so good that I just thought I'd wait before seeing another one.

We haven't been to the cinema since 1981!

Time you went again then CLKD. Your'll find its changed a bit  ;)

Wow CLKD - is there a reason for that? What was the film you saw in 1981? We try to go to cinema regularly but it can be expensive. There is a small cinema in edinburgh run by a local family. You sit on sofas and get free Pringles. The manager stands at the door in his tuxedo at the end of the film and thanks you for choosing his cinema. It's so much nicer to go there than to the big chains which are often in shopping centres - yuk! Xxx

Is that The Dominion, H&S?
The Glasgow Film Theatre (GFT) has a different atmosphere too and shows European films.

I saw WarHorse last Saturday.  Really enjoyed it and liked that there were kind bits to soften the unpleasant and sad bits.  Spielberg could really have exploited and drawn out the emotions much more than he did and I appreciated that he did not.   The story is somewhat predictable and easily told although I thought it was superbly made and the (almost) 2.5 hours flew past.  Could not even hear anyone eating or rustling.  No-one went to the toilet either!  Spielberg is a fantastic director!

Went home and watched Schindler's List after that!!!   Now that is a movie!

Like the sound of your cinema H&S!  Despite living near the centre of Glasgow for a good few years, never went to the GFT.  Hard to believe.  Nowadays I appreciate smaller specialist cinemas.  We have one up here, The Belmont, but haven't been in it for ages!  It's very run down these days, but it does show some of the lesser known films from time to time.

Yes, our local Picturehouse has a great bar and you can take your hot chocolate or wine in with you. The seats recline too and are mega comfy.  I really enjoy going there. I just don't like the huge multiplexes with old popcorn stuck to the floor, seat etc and people talking throughout the film.
I banned OH from his usual popcorn during The Artist though  ;D

He's doing the rounds currently, visiting different villages ……….  yesterday there was an article by the author about why he wrote the story through the horses' eyes …….
