Title: Should 'older' women wear jeans?
Post by: Morwenna on November 23, 2011, 11:18:07 AM
Following on from the 'should older women have long hair?' thread I wondered what you ladies think about 'older' women wearing jeans?

Well, I'm 55 and I still feel comfortable wearing jeans, so I will continue to wear them. Too old? No way!!!

I'm 54 and I wear jeans!  I wear slim fit bootcut jeans in dark denim.  I am thinking about getting a pair of skinny jeans to tuck into my boots this winter.

I love wearing my jeans and NO mans opinion [not even if it were my mans] would convince me to stop.

They're comfy [as long as they're not too tight] you can dress them up, or down.

A lady I know who is in her 60s still wears her *skinny* jeans and she looks good in them!

I wouldn't know what to wear without my jeans.  I've got bootcut ones and straight ones which I wear with long sleeved T shirts and long cardigans.  I think as long as you take a good hard look in the mirror you'll be OK.

If it were not for jeans, I'd have nothing on below my waist.  I order one brand on sale from the internet and love them.  Fortunately I have slim legs and hips.  Now if only I could tone my arms - yuk!  I haven't changed the way I dress and I'm much older than most of you, but I wear loose tops, not tucked in and try to not look like a teeny bopper.

Just bought myself a pair of pink skinny ones! I am over 40 and I look great in them. On my Santa list I want a pair of cream ones and maroon ones. I think we all get to the stage of knowing whats not right to wear. I can't see myself sitting in a nursing home wearing my jeans so I guess there will come a day when I hang them up but not just now!  ;D

Love my jeans - not so keen on the 'muffin top' that goes with them, but just co-ordinate tops to disguise it! Denim Rules x

I am big (!!) and I will wear jeans as long as they are comfortable!  I buy them in sizes big enough to fit properly, and in a style that actually sits on my waist, not hips, so I don't suffer from that horrible 'muffin-top'!  I wear them with all sorts of tops, depending on the occasion and weather, but the top is always long enough to never risk showing any flesh between top and jeans (yuk!).  I can't see me stopping wearing jeans unless and until I can't fasten them due to fingers not working properly!

At age 55 and size 16/18 and I still wear jeans.  I buy waist high ones as they are much more comfortable.  Doubt I'll ever give up wearing, unless like Scampi, my fingers stop working.

I am (almost) speechless!  >:(

How dare he air his ageist and sexist views so that you feel worried about wearing jeans!!!

They are a universal item of clothing for all aged 1 - 100 - my mum wears them at 83.

If you can, just banish his words from your mind from today and if you can find some that are comfy - just go for it. So what about a bit of a roll of fat - the low slung ones (jeans that is  ;D) are good for that and with todays loosish tops who's to know anyway?

Bloody hell! (Am I allowed to say that?). We have enough to put up with in today's culture without being put down by youth obsessed young (ish) men. I bet he'll be one that ditches his partner when she starts to get old. Grrr! (Sorry Morwenna that's probably unfair to him!).

If I knew where he was I would go a wave my bat wings at him dressed in my denims!

Come on - we don't deserve  this  :)  ;D

As I said on the hair thread - let's just all grow old disgracefully and show them all  :clapping:

I have: royal blue; yellow; grey; denim jeans.  Which I wear with either clashing colours or blend them with greys/yellows/peach.  I wear brightly coloured socks and light shoes for going out, or thick socks with walking boots when we are on the hill.  I wasn't allowed jeans whilst growing up, Dad wouldn't have his 'little girl' in trousers, even when Mum and I thought we had got away with it by her buying me cords from the catalogue  ::)

I don't think that age is the defining factor but shape definitely is if you want jeans to look really good. I still wear mine but know that they look nowhere as good as they did a few years ago due to the fatter tummy. I always wondered why older people chose such dreadful jeans but now realise that it wasn't the jeans at fault but rather the shape they were trying to fit into them! I am 57 and up to 55 they looked really good but now I do have to disguise my shape a little. A nice slim figure with well fitting jeans and a tight t-shirt always looks great I reckon.

I think that anyone should be allowed to wear the clothes they want to though regardless of how they make us look so you go for it Morwenna! I am sure I shouldn't have been wearing my jeans and FT t-shirt and little fur trimmed jacket last night but I don't care!!

I was allowed to wear jeans eventually CLKD but never on a Sunday - my dad always wanted me look like a girl then but I don't know why as he had no religion!

As a child, I was forced to wear a skirt on sundays and patent leather shoes which pinched. Guess who wears jeans and trainers a lot now?!
Stretch is a wonderful invention  ;D  I just ordered some M&S skinny jeans; I've not dared wear them before in case I look like a pig on sticks.
My husband says it's a sign of ageing when you start to wear brighter colours than you did before  ;D

I was very excited earlier this year when I started wearing jeans again after several years! My IBS meant that I could only cope with loose, drawstring-waisted trousers, usually in a size too big.  :( However, since being on HRT my IBS has settled and I'm back into stretch jeans - yay! I've only got one pair - cheap Tescos ones but they fit well. I would like to find some high-waisted ones as on the odd occasion that I feel a bit "crampy", the waistband is a bit too low and presses on the sore area. Any suggestions of where I could look?

I'm 50 and wear jeans all the time when I'm not going out for the evening.
I wear the ones that sit on the waist not the ones that you wear below your belly button.
I tried a pair on once and had to lie down to do them up and when I stood up
I could hardly breathe. They went back on the rail.
I have bought mine in Matalan recently £10.
I have to go where they do different lengths as I'm a shortie ;D

I have had Top Shop jeans in the past but find even in the petite range I still have to turn them up. I think they aim the petite height at 5ft 2 and thats still four inches too tall. I'll have another look in there next time I go to town.

That's a tricky one Taz.  I'm ok wearing m&s ones with heels.  27 inch ones look like half masts on me.  Considering that there are many ladies who were not blessed with height you would think that they might make more shorter length legs.  Mind you my daughter has the opposite problem, can only find jeans long enough in g@p.

My problem is the 27ins length jeans are just a teensy bit short for me,  so I don't feel good in them  [self conscious] so I have to buy the standard length [not sure what that is] and they're a teensy bit too long,  but with a small heel, I can get away with it.

I'd love to be "Gokked" too, but I'd never go naked for him  :o

I  love all the heather colours, pinks and lavenders and dusky ones too, my beige clothes are really creams ranging from light to dark and pinky beige.

I have three pairs of best jeans, dark blue, black and dark grey.

My weekness at the moments is soft woollen scarves to go with the colours I have so when I see a scarf in  in those colours I have to buy it. Today I bought a beautiful soft greeny gray wool one shot through with silver thread.

I found this while googling and although it is not about jeans it is a comment about an older woman wearing what she wants. It was posted by a male

"hahahahaha!! The woman who lives across the street from me is about 65. She is probably five foot, five. And maybe....250 pounds. She is frequently seen, by me, in a bright pink tube top. Of course its not a sight I enjoy, but hey, she raised 5 kids, worked hard all her life, and wants to wear a tube top. I say good for her, not caring what a bunch of strangers think.

A courtesy "tube top day" warning would be nice tho."

My next door neighbour has been wearing calf length skirts for as long as I can remember, seldom in trousers though never jeans.  She actually looks smarter in trousers!  I've always been much more comfortable in trousers. My mother was horrified that I wore trousers so much & went out and bought me skirts to wear, which I only did when I saw her.
I've taken to wearing slightly above the knee tunics/dresses but only with either leggings or opaque tights.  Maybe I'm too old for that, but I don't care.  Hubby certainly doesn't complain, unlike revealing too much up top!  ::)

Makes me wonder why it ever was that women had to wear skirts and men trousers.  Maybe something to do with religion?  If the reason was that men wanted quick access to a woman's genitals in the stone age then why did they (the men) then go to trousers?  :-\

got to wear scarves too as I hate the ageing chicken neck look  :(

skirts are just too cold in the winter imho. Gets too drafty oop top and tights are never as warm as jeans and I hate tights anyhow. Tight on the waist and Norah Battying down the legs (same problem with leggings).
I did stop wearing shorts in the summer a couple of years ago as just thought they don't look right any more.
I now wear those 3/4 leg things or a skirt when it's hot (ie on holiday as it's never hot here  ::))

I have scruffy jeans, smart jeans, skinny jeans, straight jeans and the only common denominator is that they have to sit on the waist to avoid them slipping down and rubbing drainage hole scars from an op 28 years ago. I normally live in jeans, but in this weather I'm wearing shorts. Just had the comment from a friend, "Oh, so you do have legs!" I'm 60. M & S jeggings and Per Una fit me well. If anyone said I was too too old, they would be surprised by some naughty words!

Well I wouldn't lay down the law about this ....

Let's wear what we like and feel comfortable and confident for heaven's sake!!! Age is immaterial!!!!

I'm with JuJu on this one! I'm 61, short fairly slim but not skinny by any stretch, and wear all sorts of jeans and leggings (latter mainly under long tunics either tucked into boots in winter or cut off in spring/autumn), and mainly very fitted narrow jeans/canvas equivalents - are these skinny jeans? Maybe! Sometimes looser ones/cut-offs. I also wear shorts of all lengths in this weather and including very short ones! These come out at the first sign of sunshine in March (not to the supermarket  ;D ) but all the time when camping if hot and at home. Mine have to be low waisted to avoid the embarrassing lack of wasit and how it spills over (yuk!).

I will never be dictated to by anyone about what I should wear at my age, and trust my own judgement when it comes to fashion!

Let's grow old disgracefully and not worry about all of this.

Yes - naughty words....  ;D

Women should wear what they like, when they like and how they like and shouldnt give a stuff as to what anyone thinks as long as they are happy.

I love my jeans which are all different shapes, colours and styles depending on how I feel or where I am going.

Also love cargo /combat trousers with vest tops and cosy hoodies.

I wear all manner of jeans.  I have very small hips and slender legs and can and do wear mid low rise and never give it a thought.  Never too tight or crotchy. But I wear large loose tops as I haven't been so blessed as to be slim on top.

I'm with Hurdity, et al, and wear what I please and actually get nice comments and I'm older by far than any of you.

After the death of my husband I've reset priorities and I don't give a damn about clothing, only the people who are wearing same.  I love to dress for fun and try out different looks.

Yes we should wear what we want but there are some cuts of jeans that look better on younger women unless you have been incredibly lucky to have the body of a 20yr old at 50+.
I don't, so leave the super skinny and boyfriend jeans look to those who can carry it off.

Oops, didn't mean to upset anyone.  Sorry if I did.    :(.
Just to clarify, there are skinny jeans and very skinny jeans.  The very skinny jeans (that are that tight and close fitting that you can't get them on or off) I meant are are not suitable for older women (in my opinion).

In my thinner days I used to wear jeans all the time now it tends to be Jeggings in autumn and winter with long tops.  Summer - well I struggle especially in this heat - usually cropped trous and t shirts.  If I ever lose weight I will buy jeans - not skinny ones or anything like that just nice flattering ones :)

I couldn't wear jeans in summer, loose linen crop trousers or shorts and pretty tops, in winter I have those pull on stretch jeans ( the ones from ASDA are good) and Tunic tops and Jumpers.

I alter the jeans from the knee down to make them slimmer so I can wear ankle boots ( usually laced up the front) and the hem of the jeans rest on the top of the boots,

I have always worn jeans and probably always will  :) I liked jeans that accommodate my sticking out bottom, I am sure Jeans use to be better shaped then they are now, that's why I like stretchy ones. Probably the more expensive ones do. My sister is a different shape to me and she has a flatter bottom so she can get away with wearing any type of Jeans.

Oh Honeybun 'we' were laying in baths or running into the sea to shrink jeans well before that  ;D - that is, my cousins, older friends, Dad would never allow me in trousers and I well remember him not starting the car because I was wearing 'jeans': Mum had bought me a pair of pale coloured cords hoping that he wouldn't notice  ::).  So I HAD to go and change otherwise we would still be sitting there  ;D

If I had ever tried to wear 'boyfriend' jeans then they would have fallen straight down ..........

Following on from the 'should older women have long hair?' thread I wondered what you ladies think about 'older' women wearing jeans?
I have 10 pairs 4 are day to day jeans
4 are designer Jeans I wear at night
2 are Black jeans 1 cheap pair for day 1 designer pair for night
I dont own any dressed and have 2 long skirts thats it
So for me its JEANS every time even in tropical Queensland in the summer

My friend in Brisbane sent me a message yesterday saying that she is cold - it's down to 21  ;)  ..... in the bath last night I read an article in the Guardian about Levi jeans made specfically for ladies in the 1930s.
