Title: Hip pain
Post by: lizzog on October 28, 2011, 12:21:05 PM
Im 45 now and been on Evorel Sequi HRT for about six months now.  Am waiting for an ultrasound to check for fibroids before having a Mirena coil fitted as I am still getting quite a lot of breakthrough symptoms and heavy periods. The Meno clinic I attend feel that is the way to go at the moment.
Since I started the Meno I've had on/off pain in my left hip (only ever the left one never the right), and it often coincides with lower back pain.  This last week it has been horrible, particularly at night when I'm lying down and excrutiating to try and turn over. Also had discharge, not painful or unusual, just the type I always get mid-cycle, but more than usual. Been to see a physio, who seemed slightly cynical when I mentioned I thought it was related to my hormones, and said that the pain in my hip is referred from a problem in my facet joints.  He's working on realigning my spine too which is out of kilter  :o....
I've had an ultrasound before about six or seven years ago and no fibroids were found, but I wonder if there is one lurking there somewhere - probably about another three/four weeks to wait before having the scan, so not too long, but wondered if any other ladies had experienced this type of hip pain (abit like a grinding "toothache"), and what there's was "put down to" !!

Hi Lizzog, estrogen can relax the ligaments and I think that one of the warnings is that the patch can cause back pain,  I think personally your phsio may be right,  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sacroiliac_joint  and your patch may contribute to pain.
I have had this and the pain is as you described, mine is on the left side, I was sent for phsio and was given exercises which did help.

You will probably know more after you have had your scan and at least know if anything else is  causing the pain.

Just to add catlady your phsio can't be that good if he did not know that estrogen and progesterone relaxes ligaments, my NHS phsio confirmed me this with me.

lizzog hi

Your hip pain is exactly the same as mine.   I have been suffering for about a year, its been worse since I fell down the stairs in April.   I have some arthritis in the facet joints.   After hoovering I get sharp pains in my left lower back that make me cry out.   Often at night I wake up as I turn over with the pain.   I have to do stretching exercises to get rid of the pain.   I had made an appointment with my GP to ask about it but in the end I cancelled it as I dont think they can do anything about it.   I am 52 and nearly two years post meno.

Keep in touch and let me know if the physio helps.

Thanks for your replies. Just come back from second lot of physio.  He's working on my spine as it is not very flexible in addition to the facet joint problems.  The hip pain is still there in the background - more of a dull aching sensation to be honest.  Will see how I am this week - another week before next session  :(

Hi Lizzog and Sweatybet

Mine was as you describe and between that and the fibro I got to the point I could hardly walk 500 yards.   Mine also started roughly 1.5-2 years post meno and made me cry out with pain.

I had combination of deterioration of the lower part of the spine grating on the nerves which run along my back; spine out and one leg shorter than the other due to misalignment over years.

I had 2 x specialised physio/myofascial release treatments, HRT and chiro over a space of time to bring it into line.  That also included pressure point treatment (pressing painful points in muscles with elbow or knuckles until you almost scream - pain at 8 or 9 out of 10, then hold steady until pain subsides to around level 3.   Then do stretching exercises.

On-going chiro helps mine dramatically.  I also use pressure point treatment myself now and that helps to ease off the pain in the contracted muscles, then I stretch as you do.   I have stopped HRT (perhaps temporarily) so monitoring to see if it deteriorates again.

Cannot tell you the improvement after one year of HRT, some physio and the ongoing chiro.  I am hoping to keep it at bay with a few chiro sessions a few times a year.  chiro says stretching very important.

It may just be a combination of things Lizzog that have come along at the same time to create more worry.

I was looking at an old post of mine back in 2011, and realised, no surprise, that my symptoms of dull left hip/pelvic area pain are still ongoing.
I went to see my GP today as it seems to be getting no better at all, and I thought she would at least examine me, but she hasn't and has referred me for physio. One thing that I have noticed is that when my hip/back is bad, I get other symptoms such as palpitations, restless legs etc at the same time.
Does this sound familiar to anyone???

<wave> - how long will you wait before you see a Physio.?

I have low back pain + sciatica and restless legs.  The latter is helped by eating lots of bananas.
I try to exercise  ::) ........ have cleared the treadmill and it now requires dusting  ;)
Do you need to take any pain relief by mouth?  I find that Nurofen helps in the day but not at night; I wake with left thigh burning  :o - no symptoms in the day time

Not sure how long will have to wait, hope not long!  I exercise by dog walking, about an hour, two hours a day, and am active and "on the go" a lot. I also do yoga once a week.  :-\
What is annoying is that this weird pain/aching seems to last about a week then improves, then comes back.

I've been keeping a "symptom diary" for last three years, and even with the mirena and hrt I don't seem to have really improved. No bleeding now thanks to mirena, so at least I don't feel as wiped out as I did.

Hi Lizzog

I have been experiencing hip pain since February, probably exacerbated at the time by overdoing aerobic exercise in a bid to help me lose weight.
The pain I had was on my right hip running down the outside of the thigh. The pain was dull and constant, then occasionally I would get a sudden pain like an electric shock in hip/thigh area. The pain was also occasionally in the front of my thigh. I couldn't walk for any distance or I would get lower back pain.

Upshot is, I finally started physio around a month ago, was given stretching exercises which hurt like hell to do at first. After 2 weeks I was given exercises to stretch my back and front of thigh. I cannot believe the difference in only a few weeks after suffering for months. Physio said that she though it was coming from my lumbar region. The first exercises were to stretch out a nerve root problem, this then moves to the lower back area and then the back stretches relieve the lower back pain.

I am only just post meno (if you don't count the blip a couple of months back), my GP reckoned the lack of oestrogen could be the cause.

I am not on any medication and don't yet have many meno symptoms.

I really hope that physio helps you, I was sure that it wouldn't work, but I am so so glad that I went.

I really hope t

I found a sore spot over my trochanter last night (outer hip/buttock region) - bet if I made an appt. it would have gone by the time I saw the GP  ::)

CLKD my sore spots are there all the time, the Consultant pressed them and I nearly jumped off the couch, the Osteopath would not massage my back because of the sore spots.

Because he said he would not treat me until I had seen the consultant, got a MRI and hopefully a diagnosis.
