Not sure if this topic has been done before, so apologies if it has.
The very first record I ever bought was actually for my brother's Christmas. He was into the Beatles, as a lot of folk were back then & I bought him a double A side record "Day Tripper & We Can Work it Out". He played it over & over & ..... on his new record player that Christmas. He bought me Pinky & Perky's Runaway Train. Least said about that the better! ;D ;D
The first record I bought for myself though was in slightly better taste, it was the Troggs "With a Girl Like You" which came out in 1967. My taste in music has varied a lot over the years, but hubby was impressed when he found that one in my record collection soon after we started going out together. Unfortunately he barfed at many of my other record purchases, such as the Moody Blues "To Our Children's Children's Children". He was into ELP & Pink Floyd, which I had never heard of before meeting him, blame my sheltered upbringing ;) and I liked some of their stuff.

I remember that one Mrs P.
1972 - Mott the Hoople "All the Young Dudes".
-
Mrs P I went to see him live at the Kelvin Hall in Glasgow around about that time. Friend & I skived off school to queue for tickets. Well it was exam time & we were finished with ours, teachers never checked to see if we had turned up. Found half the fifth years in the queue!
Mott the Hoople, had forgotten that one.
-
em...*cough* I am quite a fan myself. When I discovered Rolan Bolan's website a few years ago I posted a message and was over the moon to get a reply from Rolan.
When I was a teenager every single wall and celing of my bedroom was covered with pics of Marc Bolan. I remember me and my best friend screaming at the telly when he was on TOTP's. And here is a little titbit of gossip to pass on to your hubby from me. My late dear friend John lived in London in the 60's and 70's and was a friend of Mickey Finn. How cool was that! 8)

1973-Young Love - Donny Osmond. :o
Yes I was one of those teenyboppers. ;D
Convinced I was going to marry him one day ;D
-
Metal Guru by T-Rex.
First time I heard it I was hooked. Went to see him at Belle Vue in Manchester. Wonderful.
Also liked Gilbert O'sulivan Mrs P. Remember "Claire"?
-
Metal Geru- YEAH,YEAH,YEAH! good one CM!
Gilbert O'Sullivans "Alone Again Naturally" is my favourite of his Mrs P.
-
Everything is Beautiful by Ray Stevens! And yes, i still have it somewhere under the stairs!! ;D
v x
-
Alone again naturally is a favourite of mine too, in fact I think I loved just about all of Gilbert O'Sullivans songs. A very fine song writer he was.
Wonder if he is still working in the music industry, I haven't heard of him in years. :-\
-
;D Nice one LD.
This is a good thread. Brings back some good [and] funny memories! :)
-
I do beleive you LD :)
How old was you when you bought it. xx
-
First record bought uuummm - I was heavily into the musicals when I was 9 years onwards so South Pacific was probably my first LP. EP - uuummm - A Scottish Soldier ...........
-
The first albums I bought were half shares with my sister as we pooled our pocket money. Carol King's Tapestry, David Bowie's Aladdin Sane, Best of Bread, Neil Young's Harvest were among them. When she moved out to get married she took them with her and only left me the ones she didn't like anymore. Despite this we are still the best of friends.

Embarrassing....
Rolf Harris......Two Little Boys.
When I heard it recently it made me cry ::)
I inherited a lot of 45's from an older girl so I had a lot of the Beatles which I loved. Then it was the Osmonds who I saw live at the Apolo in Glasgow and from there it was Bowie and Fleetwood Mack who I also loved and saw live. Bowie was amazing and my kids will not believe I actually saw him. (I was not born this age) ;D ;D ;D
Its changed a lot over the years and have ended up the biggest Queen fan and now a Buble fan.

Mine was Morningtown Ride, by the Seekers. I also loved Gilbert O'Sullivan!
-
Oh such memories :-* ;D
-
David Essex - Hold me Close.
Happy days seeing him in Eastenders  He's still got gorgeous eyes :D
-
He hasn't worn that well though :-X
-
True but I'm a eyes girl so as long as he has them I'm hooked ;)
-
Oh I think David Essex is still a bit dishy. I went to see him in 1975 in Manchester -wonderful memories...
HB I know exactly what you mean, my kids are the same.
When I tell them of all the artists I have seen perform live in my youth, I'm sure they think I'm making it up! ;D
-
I think it must have been earlier than that as I was only about 14ish, so it must have been more like 1972/3. :o
-
Memories Morwenna!
I liked Jealous Guy too.
Those black leather gloves!
-
Oh I shared an album with my brother, the best of Marmalade. I got the duff side though with all the songs I'd never heard of. I took it to a friends one night & her needle jumped and scratched one on his side! Justice! :) I had to fess up though. When he left home he left it for me. Anyone remember the MFP (music for pleasure albums) think that was one of my first albums it was Cliff & the Shadows, which brother pinched!!! :o
-
yeah I remember them and the old top of the pops ones too.
Those were the days! Mary Hopkins wasn't it? ;D
-
It is obvious that we are all about the same age. Everyone of these songs brings back huge memories for me. I think the first record I ever bought was Sugar Sugar by the Archies. My first LP was Bridge Over Troubled Water by Simon and Garfunkel. I have seen both Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel live in recent years but not together. That would be my absolute dream come true, I live in hope!!
-
Sugar Sugar was my favourite at the time Honey!
I had it played at my 50th birthday party along with others from
over the years.
-
A Cliff Richard single called Goodbye Sam hello Samantha.
Most embarassing album: Bay City Rollers; yes I used to wear tarten trousers & tied a scarf on my wrist. Thought I was the bees knees!
:parti:

We used to see loads of good acts back in the early 70s as ticket prices were so reasonable we could buy them with our pocket money. The groups used to play smaller venues too. Among others we saw David Bowie like you, T Rex, Genesis when they were supporting Lindisfarne. All at our local Odeon too. Those were the days to be young.

-
Concerts on pocket money. Lucky you. I had to wait until I was working before I could afford to go anywhere. My mum kept a tight hold on the purse strings and wouldn't allow me any extras like concerts, even though my brother offered to be my chaperone!
-
My first record was the Beatles "hard days night " I loved the Beatles especially as I come from Liverpool , but I have moved to Scotland now . Been here 7 yrs and love it ,

I was a bit of a wierd mixture in my teens. First I was a mod and my first boyfriend had a scooter. Then I loved Motown but also was a bit of a hippy with long skirts, Afghan coat and loons! Then I went to Uni and loved Cream, Free, Deep Purple etc. (Still loved Motown though and still do) Sigh... such good times. All about growing up and learning all about life, love and responsibility.

I went to see David Essex in Godspell in London, in about 1973. I thought he was fabulous then, and I still think he is now. He just has "something"!
-
My first LP was Bridge Over Troubled Water by Simon and Garfunkel.
I've got this on my iPhone. My dad use to call them The Lodgers because I always had this album playing ;D
I have seen both Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel live in recent years but not together. That would be my absolute dream come true, I live in hope!!
I'll come ;)
-
Our pocket money was very low so the tickets really were cheap. My sister and I used to save up and sometimes walk part of the way to the venue to save money. We really were hard up when we were young coming from a big family and all that. Please don't think I was spoilt - nothing could be further from the truth.

-
;D Freddy & the Dreamers
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=So9gS4LGwF8
My brother used to dance about like them. He would also pose as Gerry Marsden from Gerry & the Pacemakers with his guitar high across his chest. Think my brother fancied himself a bit! ;D I hasten to add he was in his late teens early twenties at the time. He would do it to amuse me!
-
First record was Crazy Horses by the Osmonds but went on to be fans of Donny Osmond, David Essex, David Cassidy and The Sweet. I don't think there was a spare inch on my bedroom wall that wasn't covered in posters. Oh yes, and Mud, Bay City Rollers and Bryan Ferry - *swoon*
-
This was the record I bought myself with my first $5 Singapore dollars pocket money, it felt like a fortune.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dL9Go8rG6zs&feature=related
I bought so many SP, EP and LP's they would make a fortune on ebay today, but my first husband kept them for himself and would not give them to me, I had them all before I knew him too, one LP I particularly prized was an original "Platters " and another unusual one an LP of the whole NASA recordings of the first flight and landing on the moon, can you imagine what that would be worth today.
I wasn't into The Beatles and the British groups and never really knew who they were until we returned to England then I was not very impressed.

The Sweet Greyhoundgirl!
I liked the lead singer Brian Conley or Conelly was it? Can you remember?
The New Seekers too.Had posters of these and sweet plus loads of Donny Osmond and a big one of David Cassidy.I remember saving golden wonder crisp packets to get 3 posters one of Donny Osmond,David Cassidy and I think the other one was,a bit random,Steve McQueen which I gave away.
Those were the days!
-
Great memories! Wish hubby had held onto his old albums as some of them would have been worth a bit now. He did sell some many years ago & got a decent price back then, but they would probably have been worth an awful lot more nowadays. We were so broke at the time though and were thankful for anything we could get! Fortunately that spell didn't last for long.
-
Any Moody Blues fans lurking behind their computer. I loved them in my late teens. Got a few albums now on CD.
Larky how cool to know Marc Bolans family like that.
My claim to fame is my mum worked with David Essex's mum for a while. My mum was the wages clerk for s company. Think he's mum worked in Admin too.
-
San I liked the Moody Blues, much to hubby's dismay! ;D However, my tastes have changed over the years. Hubby still doesn't appreciate my musical taste but I don't care.
-
We love the Moody Blues! In fact, Nights in White Satin is "our" song!
-
My mum loved Go Now from way back in the 60's she loved the Seekers too, the original band. Her song was "I'll never find another you" we'd lost my dad around that time.
-
What about "The Carnival is over"? Mum loved it and bought the record for us all to enjoy, [except for one of my brothers] who was only into Elvis and Roy Orbison. 8)
-
Didn't the lead singer with the Seekers have a beautiful voice? Judith Durham, I think. I recently bought their greatest hits CD (I still like my CDs although I've got some music on-line as well).

The seekers. My dad was mad on Judith Durham,Jenny.
The carnival is over is lovely,my fave of theirs CM.
Go now by the moody blues is one of my fave 60s song Cubagirl.
-
Oh your so right Morwenna,
I have always loved music and associated it with different events, times in my life, but since I lost my lovely mum last year I just cannot listen to it now. There seems to be a memory in every song I hear, and I just can't hold back the tears. :'(
-
San I was a Moody Blues fan back in the day, but since breaking up with a 'bad boyfriend' in 1978 who was also a big fan (my first ever 'proper' relationship too >:( ) I can no longer listen to them
Made me smile, it was my first "proper" boyfriend who introduced me to some of their album stuff. We split too. I've never listened to them since either.
-
It's so true that music can prompt memories. The reason I still listen to them is they take me back to a time which has a lot of happy memories for me.
Best of Bread has a similar effect. Some nice mellow tunes to chill to on that album too.
I also like light classical music. Got that love from my days at school and playing in the orchestra. Bach, Mozart and Schubert to name a few.
That with a bath and glass of something go together like cheese & crackers :D
-
I had that one too San. Used to listen to it as I was going to bed at night, very relaxing.
-
I can't listen to Stevie Wonders song "Lately".
It was playing the day my then boyfriend( now my Hubby ) was going away to London to work for 18 mths leaving me in Norfolk. :'(
Another one is "In Dreams" by Roy Orbison my dads favourite which I had played
at his funeral 18 yrs ago. :'(
-
Michael Jackson - One Day In YOur Life
always gets me teary...
Happy song for me is, Carpenters - Only Just Begun
-
I still can't listen to the music from "Out of Africa" it was my mums favourite film and we had it played at her funeral.
Music is very powerful.

Hi Silverlady
I agree, it can make you lower listening to sad stuff or ones that bring back memories.
I choose my radio station each morning depending on my mood.
Stumpy xx
-
So true Stumpy "Wind beneath my wings" "The Power of Love" and "I want to know what love is" were amongst the songs that my OH put
onto a cassette for me when we first met, they still have the power to stir me when I hear them.
silverlady x
-
My fave of Michael Jacksons Stumpy.
My happy song is also a carpenters one "Those Good Old Dreams".
It was one I kept hearing on the radio when my then boyfriend, now Hubby, said he was coming home from London 6 months early :)
-
Hi
Cant beat the Carpenters..they were a 'bit' before my time, but I love them.
Silverlady..Wind Beneath My Wings...fabulous.

Silverlady..Wind Beneath My Wings...fabulous.
Makes me cry every time and so does the film it came from!
-
"Love never dies" by Katherine Jenkins. I will never be able to listen to that song again. Had it played at mums funeral, very powerful.
-
Happy song for me is, Carpenters - Only Just Begun
We played this at our wedding while we signed the register.
Merry Christmas Darling is another lovely song. My mum bought it for my dad as a Christmas card one year.
-
I can't remember the title but the words are..."knock three times on the ceiling if you want me...twice on the door..." do you think my memories going ;D omg!
-
Erm, let me think timtam. Do you mean "Knock three times"? ;D
I remember dancing to it at our school end of year party. The groups name was "Dawn" think his name was Tony Orlando.
-
Oh yes Morwenna I remember that. At no.1 for weeks wasn't it. I loved it! My mum used to shout out "not again!" It would be played all day on the radio, then all night on my old record player! [course it wasn't old then] but then again neither was I ;)
-
So different nowadays. Records are lucky if they stay at number one for more than 2/3 weeks. If you don't get a number 1 single now, it's not worth having. Some of my favourites never reached number 1 years ago. I only buy albums nowadays. Just bought the new Coldplay one, it may well be number 1 in the album charts but not sure.
-
Coldplay are doing a gig at my local university in Norwich soon cubagirl.
Sold out though.
I have an LP of Dawn's greatest hits in my loft.
Bought the CD cheap in HMV a while back.
-
I went to see them at the SECC 3 years ago. They were absolutely superb! Was going to order tickets for this tour, but nobody would go with me! :'( Daughter went with me last time, but she lives too far away now.

Not at £72.25 a ticket. Can't justify spending that for two hours of entertainment! Plus I'd have to pay train fares too. Wasn't nearly so expensive 3 years ago.
-
you mean that you would have paid it if your daughter was with you but not if you are on your own? Sounds cheaper on your own!! I thought you posted that you wanted to go but because there was nobody to go with you couldn't go. :-\

Ist record I bought was Carpenters album. Also bought The Planets Suit by Holtz.
I'd saved up £50 from my first wages, I got the record player for £35 from Boots and I had £15 to spend on albums. I'm too mean to buy singles!!! tho I did buy Telstar, by the Tornadoes have it on my phone now.
I still have all the records and the player, which was still working when it went up into loft, that's now 40 years old.
Going to see Glen Campbell's final tour in a few weeks. Saw Dolly Parten in Glasgow last month.
-
Sorry Taz I have misled you and possibly others, not intentionally. I actually hadn't even looked at the prices until you mentioned going on my own. I'd thought well why not indeed, but last time I think we were £40 each or thereabouts. I'd asked my relatives first before even checking the prices. When they said no I didn't even check it out, but having seen them there's no way I or they, for that matter, would have forked out that kind of money. I expect it's probably "normal" prices nowadays. Last concert we were at was the Stranglers in a small venue and we were just over £20 each.
-
Bits and pieces by the Dave Clark five :)
-
Just goes to show the age range we have on here. I used to fancy Dave Clark when I was about 10. What was I thinking? ::)
-
My first album was Led Zeppelin - the one with the zeppelin on the front and my first single was Ice in the Sun by Status Quo. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vFhSpRgeIEE Check out the shirts!!

I love Led Zeppelin. My first single was Puppy Love by Donny Osmond and my first LP, was 24 Carat Purple by Deep Purple! :D
-
:-[ Mine was - Chirpy, chirpy, cheep, cheep - Where's your mama gone? How embarrassing! And I also bought Puppy Love :-[
-
I remember that, was it sung by 'Middle of the Road'? The singer wore hot pants, did she not? I still have my "Puppy Love "single, the label is plastered with hearts and arrows drawn all over it with "I love Donny" and 'DONNY FOREVER'!. How embarrassing is that! I actually preferred David Cassidy :P
-
;D ;D
I remember my hubby giving me such a hard time over some of my music when he met me. Of course his music was much cooler than mine. ELP, Pink Floyd etc. I was into listening to this ;)
