Title: Spiders
Post by: pixie on September 09, 2012, 07:57:46 AM
Yikes massive spider in the bathroom last night - had to shut all the doors, dam up all the cracks, shut the  windows  :hotflash: and sleep with the light on (live on my own)  still there this morning in the sink.  Managed to give it a bath and remove with a tea towel out of the window :o

Much easier to deal with the cool light of day  ;) ....... I moved a loo roll holder last week and screamed when a large beastie scurried out, normally once I know which way they are running I can cope .......... it's that time of year!

Walking down our garden paths means I get webs face on  :o ...........

Web face is not at all nice!! There are loads of webs and what I call autumn spiders, all amongst the plants bushes

I would not have coped well with the spider and the tea towel!!!!!!!!! Well done. Did the towel go out as well  ;D (http://;D) mine would have!

Pixie - as well as damming up the cracks you need to put the plugs in the plug holes and stuff loo paper into the overflow in the bath and basin as these are their usual entry and exit points from a bathroom.

I love spiders of course, being an "insecty" sort of person, but I know that lots of people don't like the thought of them scurrying around and you have my sympathy!

I've had a couple of big ones recently.  I don't 'like' them but I wouldn't hurt one and tend to feel sorry for them when they're stuck in the sink/bath and can't get out.  If they're small and it won't bother me to have them running around, I tear off some loo roll and hang it over the sink/bath so they can grip onto something and crawl out.  If it's a monster spider (eek!) I open a window (you must be prepared!!), get a tall plastic beaker and put it over it, slide a piece of cardboard underneath, being careful not to chop off a leg, and let it go out of the window.

There's a saying that spiders don't reside in damp houses, so I suppose I should be pleased to see them!!

Not sure about the damp house thing. Our house has bits which are 1700s and some which are 1970s, however, it is damp everywhere. Sadly the spiders are everywhere as well.

Himself ran to the rescue but I had sorted it - it's lurking under a piece of furniture in the hall and it's not likely to be disturbed in the near future  ;D

Remember that large beastie of above: well a few moments ago I was having a quiet 5 mins.: NOT!  :o when it crawled rather than scuttled across the floor.  I have now removed said critter which seemed to be stuck in it's own web, she is now outdoors in the sunshine  ;)

I used to be very tolerant with spiders, carrying them outside etc.

However, one night when dozing off, in bed, I felt something rustling on my head. Threw back covers, turned lights on, (startled OH, who was asleep), only to see a MASSIVE daddy long legs sprinting over the pillow. This changed my outlook.

Web face and spider earrings!  What a glorious look for the garden

Purplenanny - its the first time I have ever removed such a large beast with the tea towel and not throw the towel out too!!  Must say I was somewhat chuffed. I had to paralyse it first by giving a little shower, but legs still moving aaaarrrgh, panic.  I've hoovered everywhere today, and now that has broken down.
Taz, yes I did put all the plugs in and thanks for the tip about loo roll will dam up all the holes in the bathroom to stop the creature from comming back in.

I'm chief spider remover in our ancient house :poke2:  My OH is not keen on the large hairy variety.......I use the glass and cardboard technique, but also the Dyson handheld works well, they are sucked up into the see through container and can then be released into the garden......a little dusty but unharmed  8)

Good luck Ellie! Spiders aren't attracted to light Limpy - apart from flying daddy longlegs of course which arent spiders anyway but I suppose they can be just as scary if you don't like spiders.

I lost one this morning up my dressing gown sleeve - this is always happening when I try to move one from the bath to outside. It emerged about ten minutes later looking very bemused - must have been the dreadful sights it saw under my dressing gown  ;D

Daddy longlegs aren't as scarey, because they don't move so fast in different directions  x
I have to get undressed before I tackle a spider, just incase it goes up the sleeve!  You deserve a medal Taz!

Is that what's scary about spiders then? I always wondered what it was that people found upsetting!  Daddy longlegs do tend to get tangled up in your hair though which is a strange feeling....

I have just been upstairs to unpack overnight bag,!!! There is no bedside table, but right next to the bed is an old fashioned OPEN fireplace. The room feels creepy and I just know I won't get a wink of sleep, and hubby will go out like a light. I can feel the hairs on my arms standing up now  :'(
Most people don't understand the fear of spiders, and I truly wish I didn't have it......especially tonight  :(

We also stay on the edge of the countryside and we get some BIG spiders here.

Its funny though, when we stayed in our last house which was a very very old 1st floor flat we hardly ever saw a spider. Maybe they dont like heights  ;D I would have thought that a really old place with nooks and crannies would appeal more to a spider than a bungalow.

No matter how much I tell myself I am so much bigger than them they still scare the **** out of me.

Its all those legs. Its just unnatural.

We are cutting back and shredding our garden and there are some fat 'autumn' spiders in thick webs ALL OVER THE PLACE  ;D

Spider phobia is real and common.  It's not unusual to be afraid of something that scuttles because when we lived in the cave  ;)

Neither OH or I like spiders but we have learnt to tolerate them.  :) However, he hates moths and daddy-long-legs, neither of which I mind. I'm used to be called to remove moths - he can just about cope with opening the window once I have caught them!  ;D
This morning I was driving to town when a daddy-long-legs suddenly started fluttering around in the car. I managed to wait till I parked up to get rid of it, although I must admit that I was pleased when it settled on the dashboard where I could see it. Goodness knows how OH would have coped.  :o

I think for me, it's how fast spiders can move that is the most frightening 'cos if you do manage to pin it down, it can get away again before you're ready to do anything with it!   :o  I don't mind daddy long legs so much, at least it's quite easy to grab a leg and put them outside.   ;D

Get yourselves a 'Spider Catcher', ladies (you should find one at the online 'jungle' store).

It really works, is humane as it's 'bristles' don't crush the spider and you don't have to get right up close and personal to catch it.

I've got one and it's brilliant.

<wave Skylark> - several mail order catalogues do varying designs of spider catcher - we used to have a cat  ::)  :cat88: who would pin them down under her paw, then lift her foot to allow them to run so that she could chase them .......

A spider catcher would be no use to me  :-\ I couldn't possible get that close to the spider  :(. I cannot even touch a fake spider, or even a picture of one.

Ellie, I'm glad you survived the night! I'm the same, even the top of a tomato (the leaf that looks like one) has  freaked me out before!  Will get a spider catcher but the fear is the critter might escape and quickly run up into my hair aarrrh :o

One time, my hubby was working a late shift and wasn't due home until one in the morning. At eight o'clock I decided to go up and have a shower, but I saw a big spider half way up the stairs......I don't like harming them but had no choice. So I sprayed it with fly spray and it curled up and fell over. I waited and watched for a good half hour.I finally plucked up courage and dashed past it  :o  :o  :o .The ##### thing ran as got past it >:(.....so then I was stuck upstairs till hubby came home. I'm happy to have spiders in my house, though I don't like their webs which hold the dust, and I wouldn't touch a very big spider. I never kill anything if I can avoid it, though I have killed mice as I can't have them running around the house!

You can de-sensitise yourself. I used to be scared of daddy-long-legs but when my kids were born I decided that I didn't want to pass my irrational fears onto them, so I gradually forced myself to stay in the same room as one, and now I can pick one up. My kids, I'm pleased to say, aren't frightened of anything, even if they may not be overkeen on handling a creepy-crawly. My daughter is better than my son actually!

When I was about 10 a spider ran up the leg of my jeans - I remember it ran right up to my knee, and I had both hands round the knee of my jeans and could see it wriggling around underneath - suffice to say I sat on the floor and screamed blue murder.  My big sister helpfully grabbed a big book and slammed it on my knee.  Talk about traumatised - now when I see one, it brings it all back!!!!

I am having my bathroom ripped out and a new one put in - since the builders have been in, the whole house seems to be crawling with those huge, hunter spiders   :o - it's horrific!

How do spiders come up a plughole or overflow.

Hubby and I have been having a heated discussion  ::)  over this one. He says its not possible as there is always water in the u bend and spiders cant swim under water. He also says that there are very few houses these days that dont have this kind of plumbing.

So who is right......I hate to say it but I dont think its me  ;D....unless there are scuba diving spiders.

There is an air gap in the U bend in which they can shelter from the 'flush' of water - then they crawl up again in the night when the house is quiet - this was shown on Blue Peter or Tomorrow's World or some such programme many years ago  ;)

I hate the thought of creepy crawlies coming in at night through the window so I bought an insect screen from Lidl. You stick strips of velcro type stuff around the window frame and then cut to size a piece of fine mesh netting. Place over the velcro strips and ta da you can have the window open at night! One of my best purchases this year (only cost about £3 if that).  :)

I love my spiders - there is a very patient one in the downstairs cloakroom at the minute. He has spun his web close to the floor in order to catch the occasional silverfish which wanders out from the skirting board. How does it know they are there? The cloakroom hasn't got a window so is dark most of the time but still the spiders seem to sense where to go. I am torn - I rather like my silverfish.

Definition of hedge apples

"The fruits of the Maclura pomifera tree are called Osage oranges or hedge apples. These large, green, bumpy fruits are inedible, but contain certain chemicals believed to have repellent powers. Many promote the use of these hedge balls to repel spiders."

I have been reading all of these posts and feel so sorry for those of you who are petrified of spiders. It must be really horrible when you never know when you might see one. Tremendous results can be had by hypnotherapy and desensitisation and I wondered whether anyone has actually been for this? I can't imagine spending so much time being scared of something which is all around us and so much part of everyday life.  There is a course at London Zoo - although it is booked up again this year. Apparently it is really popular http://www.zsl.org/zsl-london-zoo/whats-on/friendly-spider-programme,320,EV.html

My husband is terrified of them by the way - he reckons that was one of the reasons he married me. He watched me pick one of the large house spiders out of the bath one morning and then watched, from a safe distance, as it disappeared up my dressing gown sleeve and decided that I would be a great asset!

Taz - thanks for the link,  ;D ;D  maybe worth a try, but all courses full for this autumn, when spiders at their largest!  I haven't had any in this flat, since closing the windows and plugging up the bathroom.

Ellie, I know how you feel, I jump out of my skin when I catch sight of a tomato leaf!! :o

Just as well Mrs P isn't putting smiley spiders on here!  P xx

I tried hypnotherapy for my creepy crawlie phobia. Didn't work as I am still afraid of insects in general. Stupid I know but can't help it. I'm a nightmare abroad with frequent jumping and screaming and flapping of arms.

It does work for some people. Either I'm resistant to hypnosis or he was just a rubbish hypnotherapist.

I'd even be tempted to use it as a body spray as well if I thought it was safe to do so!
I'm sure the damned things wait till I'm in the house myself before they make their presence known. Think they sense the fear and they are just torturing me for the sheer hell of it.

I couldn't find the lemon pledge anywhere either, so wondering if it has been discontinued? Had a dreadful night, looking out for 8 legged beasties  in the bedroom and then my smoke alarm started bleeping all night, so have had the fire service here this morning!  :hotflash: X
The flat is spotless now cleaned around with  some pledge I've had for years, called classic pledge which has a limone perfume in the ingredients.  May spray on sides of bed, Anne! Apparently if you spray in on your window sill and frames, they won't cross the barrier.  Luckily the fireman didn't start looking around at the loo roll stuffed in the sink drainage holes and plugs in everywhere   ;D ;D
By the way the lemon pledge is on their website and do wipes too.
I have some eucalyptus essential oil, will put a few drops of that around tonight, because they don't like it either

Last night, just before getting into bed I was dimly aware of a largish brown lump on the floor, I thought it was a leaf. But, I didn't have my lenses in and couldn't really see,  so popped the emergency glasses on.  I was confronted with a massive spider (3" across the legs, 1/2" body)

I am sure it was taunting me, doing the spider version of the New Zealand Haka.  I remained calm and grabbed a piece of kitchen roll which was handy and covered the offending beast. Then grabbed the whole thing and sprinted outside, to dump the whole handful. Can't comment on the state of the spider, as I didn't look.

The bad news is, the bedroom windows and patio doors have been open all day because of painting. Goodness knows what will be in here tonight. :o

Honeyb, did you know spiders can bite? I think Pixie has a well balanced approach.  ;D

I was bitten several years ago in our garden.  We have 2 large beasties around the house this week.  So long as I know where they are headed  ::) - I can deal.

Our quail eat them.   :o  ........... using Pledge is cruel, better to stamp on them or use rolled up newspaper if you must kill them.

Spiders' web is the strongest material made - and is used in some countries to bind wounds.

The running over the face sensation .....story to tell.

Years ago both of my kids had hamsters. One little blighter kept escaping. One peaceful night both of us sound asleep. Suddenly hubby lunged out of the side of the bed. He gave me such a fright. He was saying ...turn the light on, turn the light on. I did and he sat up in bed holding.....a hamster.  ;D
It had run over me, covered up to my ears and then across hubbies bare chest.

At least it was not a spider. I have had one on my dressing gown too. I have had quite a few biggies in the house over the last few weeks. They make me shudder.

Give me a hamster any time.

I love them but really feel for those who are scared by them.  My husband is terrified of them which is difficult when he's gardening and also difficult because I like them around but he makes me get rid of them all when they come in. He woke me up at 3 this morning because he needed to use the bathroom and there was a really large female scrabbling around in the bath.

Have you tried any of the therapies groundhog? It seems daft to put yourself through all of this worry and fear if there is a way to combat it.

This isn't about spiders, but cockroaches - I once heard of a cellist who was taking part in a concert with her string quartet.   They were up on stage, playing away, when the cellist spotted a cockroach on the stage floor and it was coming towards her.  She couldn't do anything about it and she just had to keep on playing.   Unfortunately, it wasn't put off by her long skirt and just crawled underneath the hem and up her leg!!!!   And as the show had to go on, she still just had to keep on playing!!  (This was told me by someone who knew her.)

In the early days of our relationship OH was driving me to play in a concert.

Just think of it like this honeyb. They have spent all that time underground grubbing about and now they have their wings they just want a bit of freedom (and mating of course) before they die off. They don't mean to invade your space - they just haven't quite got the hang of being above ground yet.

Oh I had one of those last night, he took a few steps and then dropped about 3 inches. He did this half a dozen times.
I was reading in bed, with one eye on him , telling myself it was ok as he wasn't near the bed. So, what did he do? Yep, he made his way to directly over the bed and continued his little show!!  :o (http://:o)

He didn't live to long after that! and I suffered a massive hot flush  :sweatdrop: (http://:sweatdrop:)

I really do not like spiders. It stems from when we moved into our first house and lived out of the packing boxes for some time while waiting for cupboards and storage. When we eventually emptied them, masses, yes masses  :o (http://:o) of spiders came running out all over the place. They must have nested in there. I had a massive panic attack, frozen to the spot. It was absolutely horrendous.

Ever since, spiders and me are a no no!

I might get one of those catchy things, but would be worried it would run out and up my arm! Oh heck!

I hate them - when I was a child I seem to be able to hear them!  My parents had polystyrene tiles on some ceilings and I could here the big ones scampering across them.  Terrified of them 😢🔨🔨

My mother has a neat little sucky them up thing. She seems to manage ok with it and no running up her arm incidents   ;D

I hate them too and they are getting bigger....I'm sure of it ...either that or I'm getting scareder.

;D ……….. our cat used to put her paw over one, then lift carefully and peer underneath to see if it was still there ; my terrier would chase spiders across the room, then sit whimpering if they ran up the wall  ;D.

I LOVE spiders, they're especially good on toast. Uuurgh, kidding of course, I've made myself want to throw up!

My worst one was last summer when I felt something tickling my face in bed, snapped the light on and there's a behemoth Shelob fresh out of it's cave, sitting on my pillow - huge, thick and hairy (oi that's rude!), it saw me and scuttled down the back of the bed, I had to move the whole bed to catch it before I could sleep, even then I had trouble.

Also last summer, I got out of the bath, grabbed the towel and started drying off, only to find I had rubbed a huge spider all over me where it had settled in the folds of my towel. Strewth!

I don't mind mice that much....but I have been known to scream and bring neighbours running.

Always seems to happen to me.

We had a very big dog years ago and I bought her dry food in bulk. I kept it in the garage in a swing bin. I went out to get food from the bin. Got the scoop, leaned in up to my armpit and a mouse ran up my arm. I ended up half way down the drive screaming my head off  ;D.

Second occasion with mice. We kept rabbits and guinea pigs in a big run in the garden. Hubby built them a great home. I went in to clean out the hutches with my son holding the bag for all the dirty stuff. Opened the sleeping hatch to clean it out and out comes two mice....my son was in knots as I hurdled the fence that enclosed the run. He reckoned he had never seen his mother move so fast or jump so high.

Between that and wandering hamsters in the night I have done my time with furry things  ;D

I have decided it could only happen to me  ;D

I really quite like spiders, in fact I may get a tarantula as a pet one day.

It appears I'm a bit scared of mice though, as I discovered when one ran past me one day so I put traps down. All was fine until we caught it and I just couldn't bring myself to approach it, never mind pick it up. That said we rented a holiday cottage a few years ago and the laundry stuff was in the basement and there was at least one mouse which used to come and watch me so I used to joke about heading down to see Mickey.

Well.....me and birds  ;D

By this point ...I'm the mad woman of the forum.  ;D

I reckon I was traumatised as a child by being taken through a free flying aviary. They all tried to land on my head.
So birds for me are best viewed at a distance.....except I live by the seaside and we having dive bombing free flying rats...,ie seagulls.

Oh they like me....they crap on me from a great height, they pinch my ice cream, they come far too close and I don't like them at all.

My hubby laughs because if we have an ice cream cone in the summer, I cower in a doorway licking mine because I just know they are....waiting ....and watching  ::)

As for having chips  ;D

They are not protected up here. We now have hawks being flown along the sea front. They are evil buggers to be honest and getting bolder by the year.
It's also an offence to feed them from the prom in an effort to send them back to sea. Seems to be working quite well.

All very humane but if one comes near me I clout it with my handbag  ;D

I doubt any of our gulls have ever seen the sea! Don't reckon they'd know what to do with a fish unless it was in batter  ;D

I meant to post this a few weeks ago  ::) - meno-brain strikes again!

RSPB web-site -

"All species of gull are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 and the Wildlife (Northern Ireland) Order 1985.

"This makes it illegal to intentionally or, in Scotland and Northern Ireland, recklessly injure or kill any gull or damage or destroy an active nest or its contents. In Scotland and Northern Ireland, it is also illegal to prevent birds from accessing their nest, and in Northern Ireland, it is illegal to disturb any nesting bird. In addition, the Mediterranean gull is protected under Schedule 1 of both Acts making it illegal to intentionally or recklessly disturb the birds at or close to their nest or to disturb their dependent young.  … "

Spiders are appearing - must be Autumn then: anyone scared?

They are still flying Hawks around the seafront.
The gulls really are a menace so anything to send them off is good by me.

They should be out at sea and not raiding bins and pinching ice creams.

My daughter is phobic about spiders. Many a time I have had to go to her rescue, yet she has just send me a picture of her holding a tarantula! Now I couldn't do that. My response was that it was a plastic one or it wasn't her, but apparently it was her and it was a real one. I'm waiting to hear how she managed to hold it.

We are being over run by wood pigeons at home and they are a menace in such large numbers. Plenty of poop! Yuck! :( And very noisy early in the morning.

Why not raid bins and pinch human food, they are opportunists  ;D ……… humans do the same  ;)

We are beginning to see those lovely Autumn spiders in the garden …….

May I giggle  ;) ………. there are several desensitisation programmes, I believe that London Zoo hold tarantula days  :-\ where people pay to get close up and personal with large spiders.  Not my idea of fun though I don't mind those in our garden or house.  I helped one out of the bath this evening, silly critter decided to fall in as I began running the water  ::) ……. no idea where she is now though ……..

Are spiders insects ?

"Pest management consultant Clive Boase said conditions are ideal for the spiders over the coming weeks, but says their numbers are unknown.

Clive said: “Nobody has any idea how many false widows there are – they are a small insect, so there potentially could be hundreds of thousands or even millions. . "

I thought that insects have six legs?
