Title: Has Anyone used Ancestry.co.uk?
Post by: KaraShannon on June 13, 2020, 09:35:18 PM
Hi everyone

I've just signed up for ancestry, and then paid another ?50 on top for further records....now I've got a headache.  So many lists of people and when you click on them you get the same info as when you're scrolling, plus you lose your place.

That's been my experience anyway, I can't find much info on deaths or anything else.

Anyone really good at using the site can make any suggestions?  Currently it just seems a lot of random births and deaths lol (life eh!)

I use ancestry.  It takes a bit of detective work sometimes.

my advice is start with your parents, then move further back as you get more information.  Researching can become quite expensive when you start buying birth, death and marriage certificates and I pay for an annual subscription, as it works out cheaper for searches.  I dip in and out when I have the time but have hit wall now as 75% of my ancestors are Irish.

Good luck, I have found people looking for the same ancestors and had my DNA results done.

Start local i.e. with your parents as suggested.  Remember what you were told and jot it down against any photos.  Apparently some Church records which should be free to view are now held in their nearest City  >:( ......... which means driving there, making an appt. to view what should be ours to access  >:(  >:(

How exciting!  What do you expect to find  ;)

Thanks Donnadoobie and CLKD

The part of my family I'm searching are all Irish, I've found a great, great, great, grandfather, or what I think he is, but there doesn't seem to be a lot of information on there, just guessing from dates and spouse names.

And I found a death certificate and it said "Co Home......" and something else which I've no idea what it says, seems to begin with F,  ;D  "furnishings?"  It's as long as that but no idea what it's saying.

I don't think scrolling and clicking on stuff merely to find that it says the same thing as what I saw scrolling is good for my residual labyrinthitis  ;D.

Sure I'll get used to it in time......but not sure there's much on there somehow.

Hi KS,
I've used Ancestry for years and it can take a while to get your head round it.  There are tutorials, on the site, which you may find useful.

As for birth, marriage and death certificates I would advise you to get them direct from the Records office as Ancestry charge a huge premium. It's a total rip off.  The Records office now also do emailed PDF copies that are even cheaper.

Don't dispare as it will get easier as you get used to it.

I haven't used it but I wanted to find some old family wills and went on the Gov site " find a will" or something like that. Provided you know their name and roughly when & where they died you can search and then if you find them it was ?10 for a copy ( 2 years ago) may not be useful to you, but it was what I was looking for. ;)

Interesting discussion, I'm supposed to be taking out a subscription to Ancestry, when we were in lockdown but never got round to it. My mum sent me the family tree for my dad's side of the family - which is the one I did in school for a project, so actually mum it's mine! ;D
Must get round to registering.

KaraShannon.  Irish ancestry is a pain to research as many of the documents have been lost.

my Irish families moved to Scotland and Staffordshire ( Fathers side and Mothers side). census results only show place of birth as Ireland, but where?

I know through talking to my oldest cousins that my Fathers family came from    County Monaghan and I found another person searching the same line on my mother's side and they came from Roscommon, although may have another link to Galway.  so hard as spellings have change so much and many anglesised their names to sound less Irish  :'(

I have had much more luck researching my one Norfolk route, where I live today, my Maternal grandfather.  I found a group of fellow relations from around the world and their research goes back to 15th century, for one. ranch if my tree.

It does not help that I never knew my Scottish family, as in those days it was too far to travel to without a car and my Mother's father left the family home when she was 12 and she never saw him again after she was 17, so I really don't have much anecdotal information.

Good luck, you may find it raises more questions than answers but I love it!

Penguin99, I've just gone there, I had no idea, I've just looked up both grandparents and now it says I will have the wills delivered on 1st July.  Now I'm not sure if they will deliver them to my home or to my email.  Hoping it's my email, my partner will wonder why I'm having wills sent to the house.  ;D

I have my paternal grandparents' photos of them on their engagement day, I believe Gran was 21.  I have their Birth and Death Certs. and would like to frame them as a group ......... social history.  My Mum is great at remembering her side.  I have photos of her Grandad and Gran and her Dad in Uniform .......... I really should Get On with This!

Anyone that has photos that they don't have names for, I believe that costume depts in Colleges can date them due to the dresses and how they posed for photographers?  Also some people collect wedding photos even if they don't know the names, again as social fashion history.

Hi Kara

Just a suggestion about navigating your way round the Ancestry site, as I see that you mentioned losing your place. I use Ancestry a lot (I have an - interesting (!) - family history) and if I want to look at something which isn't on the page I'm on, I right click on the options at the top of the page and open another tab. So, for example, if you're on your family tree page and want to do a Search, right click on Search and 'Open link in new tab' is the first option' Left click on that and away you go. You can actually right click and open a new tab from any link, pretty much anywhere, I think.

I always end up with loads of tabs open. It's still quite easy to get lost, but if you're strict about keeping your main pages visible, I find it does help a lot.

Thanks for that Eviepf!  Any help I can get is welcome  ;D

And yes, do tell, or let us know when the book is out.  ;)

CLKD, another great tip, thanks.

I have been giving myself ten mins at a time to 'work' on something, just ten mins, even if that's just getting some papers or whatever into a pile, etc.  I've found I get into tasks really well by 'not' doing them (ie just setting myself ten mins)  ;D

Haha! Not sure my saga is book-worthy, but it involves being adopted as a baby, later finding my birth mother and half-siblings (didn't end well, sadly - the relationship limped on for about 5 years before ending with a huge row.. :() Only very recently I've 'met' (virtually, due to lockdown) another half-brother via my mother who was also adopted at birth and who I knew nothing about at all, although he knew about me.

The strangest part is to do with my birth father, who was a US serviceman but not, as it turns out, the one named in my adoption file (whose family I had got to know, my 'father' having died at a young age). Ancestry DNA has recently revealed a completely different family of origin, from a different part of the US. I had wondered why none of the people I had expected, from the area I had expected had ever appeared as DNA matches, but when the 'new' people turned up, all became clear...

This is a very potted history and leaves out quite a lot of weirdness along the way!
