Title: Palm oil
Post by: CLKD on November 19, 2018, 03:06:18 PM
On the back of the withdrawn advert regarding orang utans and the devastation over-all of habitation, I wonder how many products contain palm oil of any type?

We are rethinking our quick home 'fish and chip' night since reading palm oil on the back of Youn*s frozen battered cod fillets box.

There is a difference between 'dirty' palm oil and 'sustainable' palm oil. There's a list somewhere showing which companies are achieving what. The problem seems to be that alternatives are also not kind to the environment. So difficult.

I have! I've had 3... lol.
Now, where's that cake?   ;D

Taz, I think Iceland is giving up on palm oil.
Is dirty oil the oil they get from a source where they don't care where it's come from?
And sustainable oil is sourced from a place where they ‘farm' it.....?

I think so. There's a woman in our local pub who's been boycotting anything that uses palm oil for years now so I've heard a bit about it. Her husband, though, yearns for a 'proper' bar of soap, shower gel etc etc. Will try to find out more re dirty and sustainable palm oil.

Tnx so much.  I wonder whether 'palm oil' is called something else, i.e. SLS ......... because I can't find evidence on anhythig recently purchased, i.e. bubble bath.

This is great - I just found this list independently and suddenly remembered there was a thread about it!

Do read about the Chester Zoo campaign https://www.actforwildlife.org.uk/ which tells you all about Palm Oil and then you can try to shop using brands found on Taz's list.

We intend to do so as from now :)

CLKD I'm not sure about non-food products- the list says this about food products:

Thanks to recent changes in EU legislation every food product sold to the public in the UK that contains palm oil must have ‘palm oil' listed on the packaging. Some will state that their palm oil is certified sustainable but others don't.

ALso here is some more info from WWF about products that contain it and yes you could be right about SLS although looking into it further it doesn;t necessarily come from palm-oil - it's a minefield once you start looking!!!:

Many products that use palm oil aren't clearly labeled. Palm oil and its derivatives can appear under many names, including:

INGREDIENTS: Vegetable Oil, Vegetable Fat, Palm Kernel, Palm Kernel Oil, Palm Fruit Oil, Palmate, Palmitate, Palmolein, Glyceryl, Stearate, Stearic Acid, Elaeis Guineensis, Palmitic Acid, Palm Stearine, Palmitoyl Oxostearamide, Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-3, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Sodium Kernelate, Sodium Palm Kernelate, Sodium Lauryl Lactylate/Sulphate, Hyrated Palm Glycerides, Etyl Palmitate, Octyl Palmitate, Palmityl Alcohol

Title: Re: Palm oil - Chester announcement
Post by: CLKD on March 14, 2019, 05:50:55 PM
In September 2017 we launched an ambitious, major new conservation campaign to make Chester the first city in the world to source its palm oil from entirely sustainable sources. We wanted to do something innovative; something game-changing; something that could have a significant impact on shaping the future of our planet.

We wanted Chester to lead the way on an issue that's vitally important to the long-term survival of many iconic species.

Now, 18 months later, we've achieved our goal!

I am going to source some old fashioned soap flakes, make my own cleaning detergent. Made from vegetable oil but no palm oil.

My Meridian Almond butter I love has no palm oil in it, it really is very hard to avoid but I do try.

Yes, I think what health food shops sell, is more likely to be palm free. Unfortunately the price is usually higher.

I have purchased some soap flakes, which are totally palm oil free. They can be diluted in water to make a cleaning fluid.  I will let you know how effective it is.

Modern cleaning products do contain a lot of toxic chemicals so I am hoping that this will be better for my health as well as the environment.

Let us know how it goes. I tried similar but found it just didn't work on getting clothes clean. Not sure which brand it was now.

My eyes aren't good enough to read the labels anyway.  SLS is in many products: shampoo, toothpaste ........ did anyone see Gregg Wallace in the week talking to a baker who is trying to substitute palm oil?  He mentioned lard and Gregg's eyes rolled  ;D well it didn't do any of us any harm and Gran lived until she was 84.  'trex' anyone ?

Trex is a solid vegetable fat brand sold in the UK, it is available in most major supermarkets. You can also use Flora White as an alternative, or lard if you don't mind animal fats.

Yeah a nice bit of lard spread onto toast and liberally sprinkled with salt - poor man's dripping! Bread and scrape my grandmother used to call it.

Its a wonder our parents actually made it to adulthood.

Is Trex still around? Funnily enough I was thinking about it the other day.

I think the sedentary lives we now lead make the difference between their apparent long lives despite lard and the horror with which it's talked about nowadays? My dad was a lorry driver and driving a lorry in the forties, fifties and sixties was a proper work out. Same as my mum doing the housework. No automatic washing machines or vacuum cleaners in the early days. Gardening too was much more physical. Kept the heart healthier I'm sure.

I agree.  When I remember what my grandparents ate but they also walked or cycled, worked on the land, walked cows 2 and from the fields often several miles between farm and pasture.  So energy was burned off every day.

I can remember having bread and dripping for breakfast made from pork leaf(whatever that was) covered in salt, was lovely.  Going back to this palm oil, I've not heard anything before about this and just googled it, why on earth dont we just use rapeseed or sunflower instead?

Because World Wide we don't grow enough.  Because World Wide we don't have the space which is why huge areas of forest are grubbed out  :'(

Well if that carrys on well have plenty of empty space, are they not replanting? How awful!! We never learn  :(
Title: Re: Palm oil

Nope.  Orang utans are in grave danger due to deforestation which also has a knock on effect allowing water to put off, causing mud slides and drownings.  Trees really do breath air as well as slowing down flooding.

Humans will destroy everything,we've raped and pillaged the earths resources we cause the extinction of beautiful creatures but like Deirdre says,we never learn.
I remember some halfwit decided to re introduced hedgehogs on Stornaway, was it?keep me right clkd 😊 then the hedgehogs do what they do and started eating all the eggs of ground laying birds,so then what happened? They then had to go and kill the hedgehogs, omg,it makes no sense, these people should be hung drawn and quartered.
Rant over🤨
