I don't what the programme is called but it was on BBC 2 ( I think ) last night at 7pm and the family live in a house decorated in the style of the period and live each year of the decade.
Last night was the 1970s youngest DS was here and amazed at the clothes furniture cars days out and holidays etc of the decade while all DH and I could say was gosh rember that/them.
The son in program had school dinners and DS was appalled at the chocolate sponge and pink custard but DH and I both loved school dinners including the pink custard.
Happy days .
Next week is the 80s so it should be good.

Ps just realised the programme is on again tonight.

I loved pink custard ;D but I wasn't a fan of school dinners, my mum used to ask "what did you have for dinner" my favourite was "grey meat pie" :o I've no idea what it was so I used to describe how it looked and I liked it :)

I didn't stay for school dinners, I went home as I only lived
down the hill,
BUT, sometimes, I used to sneak in the dinner hall, and take the chocolate crunch
and custard, and I had the cheek to sit down and eat it in there, no one EVER noticed.
I know....I know.....I was a little thief,.....but in my defence, they shouldn't have made
it sooo nice......
I really miss that chocolate crunch, I've tried others over the years , but nothing comes close.....maybe that's my punishment.........lol

I HATED school dinners. I only suffered them for a couple of years before my parents started sending me in with sandwiches, but I remember the grey meat and soggy veg and how the potatoes had that horrible taste they get from being reheated. And the puddings...I've never been able to look at sago, semolina, tapioca, warm jam or sponge with custard again!

I hated school full stop!,!
The quicker I got outa there, the better....
Even hated it when my sons were at school, just the smell turned my stomach.
Ended up being a school cleaner for 12 months......lol

I HATED Infant school :'(. Senior school was OK as we did drama, swimming, music and singing. I don't remember much about senior dinners but at infants they did chocolate semolina one week and vanilla I suppose another one day a week; wasn't allowed 2nds of chocolate 'cos I didn't eat the vanilla ::)

I loved that Toffee Cream Tart!!! Also crumble with the big doughy bits of crumble :D
One of my school 'horror' memories is sitting across from a boy called Julian who sneezed his banana custard out of his nose - that put me off having that ever again.
I also enjoy watching the 'Back in Time' series on TV Lanzalover :)

Not much on here is TMI but that certainly is :sigh: :sick02:

Toffee cream tart sounds lovely but it wasn't on the menu in my school :-\ one of the odd things we were served that I haven't come across since school was vegetable soup with a blob of mashed potato dolloped in it :o

I remember having a winter salad at school. Big metal trays full of shredded cabbage, vegetables in rows. We used to have fried potato skins with it. This was in the days before we got chips at school so we thought them a great treat.

Spam fritters anyone??

Spam fritters anyone??
Now that really is a trip down memory lane!
I actually quite liked them :D

Well thats the last time I eat Toffee Cream Tart! I had the night from hell. It was boiling hot here. All the windows were wide open upstairs and I had the bedroom ceiling fan on. I nodded off then woke up with a sick taste in my mouth. Had some water, mouthful of sick again, loo visit, more water, etc until about 4 am.
Its my own stupid fault as I normally never eat pastry as it gives me heartburn. My excuse was it was just a very thin pastry case! I then went down onto the sofa with towels to lay on as I was boiling hot and put another fan on down there. I saw 5 am come and go and then hubby woke me at 7.30 with a cup of tea. I still feel terrible. :'(

No more toffee cream tart for you then PF...
It's such a shame when something we really fancy makes us ill.
Onions and garlic do it to me now, and I love them, (amongst other stuff)
/but I have to tread so careful now with them. I'm finding other things have started
to upset me as well, by the time I'm finished, there'll be only bread n water left...lol
Take care pf, hope you feel better soon.

I hate waking up in the night with reflux like that. Makes you feel horrible. Did you take anything such as Gaviscon or Rennies to settle it? Hope you feel better soon.

We used to have Gypsy Tart, which could be similar. It's very much a Kent thing and I don't think you can get it anywhere else
Made with dark brown sugar and evaporated milk. We get very excited when we spot it in a bakers window.
Naughty but nice.

My primary school dinners were really nice - the ones I remember liking were the sausage hotpot, liver/bacon casserole, macaroni cheese, Swedish apple charlotte and sponge with jam sauce (sounds horrible, but it wasn't!) and I have them to thank for my love of coffee because whenever imagination failed them, they gave us each a mug of milky coffee and an apple for pud!
But I also remember one of the lunch prefects who told us to "eat what you can and eat what you can't"! (Think she got her wires crossed there!)
