Title: Going grey
Post by: Pennyfarthing on March 06, 2018, 02:55:49 PM
I have been thinking of not dyeing my hair for ages and havent done so now for a couple of months.  This is the longest Ive gone although I have been stood in shops with the packet  in my hand but returned it to the shelf!  ;D

My natural hair colour is dark brown with a bit of red tones and I have quite pale skin.  My hair is long and I usually  twist it up on top of my head somehow so I can kind of disguise white roots.  My hair grows very quickly so I'm hoping the transition to grey wont take too long.

I've been salt and pepper for years  ::).  I have used over-the-bath, looks-like-murder-has-been-commited packets of self dye  ;D ;D.  I've also had hi and low lights by a professional who used to visit us at home.  That stung a bit.

See how it goes.  Sometimes grey lightens in the summer.  When I have mine cut it takes most of the grey away.   You could of course go to a saloon with wigs to see how you look with different colours ;-)

For quite a while I paid about £60 at hairdressers for base colour plus low lights and it looked lovely but as my hair grows quickly it didnt last that long.  Then I had a hairdresser come to the house and she was much cheaper and did a good job.  She had her second baby and stopped for a while so I did it myself which was a mess and a faff.  She came back A few months later and then got pregant again so I kept doing it but all the time wishing that I could give in and go grey gracefully.

My mother has lovely thick pure white hair and everybody comments on it so I hope I go the same as her.  :).       I find it so hard to walk past hair dyes now.

I'm the same. Dark brown and have been letting the grey come through but family and kids kept telling me it was awful so I dyed it again but i really didn't think I looked  any younger or anything with the dye, so I'm letting it go grey again. I like it but it's other people who always comment about it saying I should dye it. I have known a few people who have let the grey come through and they really suit it.

My hair is not like it used to be. I always had very thick hair and lovely condition but I don't think the dye does it much good and now it's a lot thinner and doesn't look as shiny (or is that a meno symptom?). I look at old photos of me and how nice my hair used to look but I really have got sick of dyeing it especially as the grey comes back again so quickly.

My hair has also lost it's shine and fullness - but not everyone is affected it seems. My mum kept her really thick, beautiful hair right up until her death at the age of 84. Sadly I seem to have inherited hair from my dad's side of the family!  ;D

I haven't read all of this but it gives some idea of what happens to our hair as we enter menopause http://life-begins-at.co.uk/hair-changes-menopause/

Mine has been shedding for about 5 years now. I'm so glad I had  thick hair to start with but it couldn't be described as thick anymore. Funny thing is I used to hate how thick it was, now I miss it!

Hello ladies.

I'm 61 and although only a few grey hairs so far I've noticed more arriving of late.  I've vowed not to dye it mainly because I used to colour my hair when I was younger and it ruined the condition. The women I know who have let their hair go grey look very good to me and this may be because their natural colour complements their complection.

Take care all.

My natural colour was mousy brown but I've mostly had it coloured varying shades of blonde for most of my adult life. I've been colouring it myself for years now and was using shade 9.3 but even then white roots would begin to show after 4 weeks. So now I am using shade 10 and although I often think it's so light that it almost looks white, it is a perfect colour for me now as the roots hardly show.

My method is to mix up just half of the packet. Do the roots then immediately comb it through all my hair with a wide tooth comb. Leave for half an hour. I find that this way I don't get those awful lines where you can tell the roots have been done over and over. Then next time the roots need doing, I use the other half of the packet.

After a few root touch ups, I do use a whole packet to brighten up the rest of my hair.

I don't find it a bother, it's cheap and I can do it whenever I decide it needs doing. So for now I'm happy to carry on with it.

Sounds good, I have a friend with mousey hair and she does what you do and it always looks good.  I commented on her hair recently and she said “but its full of grey” and she showed me but it all blended in so nicely.      I guess mine is worse as its dark brown.  Today I went back to using a tinted moisturiser which I havent  worn for about a year - I just thought as I have this grey halo around the front of my hair Maybe my skin needed to look a bit darker!  ;D

I've had a hair cut for the 1st time since October - a lot of grey, now gone  ;)

Grey hair doesn't take up colour as easily as other hair as it's courser.  So beware  ;D

Well I now have quite a nice white halo around my hairline. I dont have a fringe and I always have it swept up into a top knot of some sort. I am rather liking it now and nobody has said anything negative, in fact I dont even think they've noticed.

My hairdresser is coming round next Friday to give it a good trim.  She always says my hair is in lovely condition so I will see what she thinks now.

Well I wish I hadnt done that!  Just googled “how long does it take to go grey.”and it says 10 years!!!! Surely not. My hair grows quickly.

My hairdresser came and cut a couple of inches off it the other day and she examined it and said she thinks I will just go white instead of salt and pepper so that cheered me up a bit. My Mum at nearly 94 has thick, pure white hair.  everywhere we go she gets compliments about it so I hope mine goes the same.

Just had mine cut and coloured, back to almost its natural chestnut-with-red-hints shade.  The hairdresser took it slightly lighter this time and Hubby and I both think it looks better.  Dark-haired people's hair needs to keep up with skintone as it lightens with age, otherwise our faces fade into the background - and we don't want that, do we, girls?    ;)

I agree. Too many women dye their hair a very dark colour and it just looks like they have a hat on.   ;D.  I gradually went lighter when dyeing mine and had lowlights put in.  Now I am no longer dyeing it I quite like the look.  If I am going out anywhere now I do spend a bit longer doing my makeup as I think my skin tone needs a bit more colour.  I use a tinted moisturiser and it just gives a little colour to your skin which I hope looks better against my white halo.  ;D

Yes agree why do some people dye their hair so dark as they age..... black/dark brown hair is so harsh - not to mention a stark contrast for any stray greys on the parting & sides !  Been very lucky having very thickish hair, but unlucky that it grows so quick !!! >:(. My roots show up two weeks after a trip to the hairdressers  :-\ My hair is very light brown and I have a few very subtle highlights in, the aim is  to go dark blonde eventually and onto a lighter blond in the future. My mother had the most beautiful hair despite having it bleached and coloured since she was 21, towards the end of her years she was an ash blonde. Having pale skin and blue eyes it suited her better than her natural dark brown ! Sometimes I see ladies with the most amazing grey hair though and just wonder ...... decisions decisions  :o

I met a woman on Saturday with lovely grey hair in a really nice style. I complimented her on her hair and said I had also decided to go grey. I did feel a fool when she told me she has it dyed grey.  ;D. I know its quite trendy for very young girls to dye their hair grey now but I  Honestly thought she was about my age.  She was 45!

apparently they strip all the colour out of your hair and then colour it grey. She also has to use a purple shampoo she told me.

Has nobody told them that one day they'll have no choice in the matter?  That lovely moment when we realise the "me" hair colour that we've known all our lives suddenly or gradually gets grey-ed out, never to return?  Goodness, they'll be wearing artificial wrinkles next!   :o

I saw a friend recently who has dyed her hair since I have known her. She went cold turkey and stopped dyeing her hair. I hadn't seen her for a long time due to living a long way from each other, so I was shocked, but in a very positive way. Her hair looks lovely. I'm fortunate not to have had spent money on hair colour as I am still blonde in my 60s. Shame my hair won't behave itself in other respects!

The grey is coming through nicely now.  I know theres quite a trend for young women to dye their hair grey and wonder whether this would work for me to hasten the process.

I am hopeless with anything to do with hair (despite having plenty of it!) so if I got it dyed grey and then let THAT grow out would I be grey underneath.

Probably the daftest question ever asked on here!  ;D

The awnser would be yes....but the question is, would you like to go grey overnight so to speak?
How about having some grey streaks added instead?,

actually I think I might now I'm getting used to it.

I bumped into a former colleague this morning in a supermarket.  She went grey years ago when she was about 40.  She is pure white and her hair looks stunning.

I was just thinking about her the other day and told her this.  She said she thought I had had expensive highlights put in my hair!  maybe she was just being kind but it boosted me a bit!  :)

Bottom line Pennyfarthing is that if you had short hair it would take almost no time at all. For those of us with long hair which we've been dyeing dark brown and want to keep the length, it will feel like forever unless we try to meet it halfway by going a little shorter. I've also been advised to use one of these very temporary tints that wash out if I absolutely cannot stand the big grey border but I'm sceptical as I don't think they fade out completely. I took the plunge and went to a shoulder length cut not so much in preparation for going grey but because mine had thinned so much that it had become “not a good look”.  I get about 15mm of grey growth at the roots every 6-8 weeks so even with my shortish long hair I've decided I don't have the balls to get off the dyeing hamster wheel just yet. Im therefore really interested in how it goes for you. I love gorgeous grey so all the best!

In my case, with long hair,  it took three years to completely grow out and, along with menopause and related weight gain, it has only served to make me feel old and frumpy. So I decided to have it dyed again, but the dye wouldn't ‘take' on the fully grey hair! It only showed up on the underlayer where some of my original natural colour remained.

Not sure why it worked when I was only having roots done, but won't stick now...maybe because the rest of it it had been coloured over and over which had changed the texture.

Sorry to be the voice of doom, I do hope everyone else enjoys their grey hair and has better luck.

Thanks to you and Hezzalady.  The  hairdresser came a few weeks ago and I told her I wanted a couple of inches taking off, we started talking and by the time she had packed her things away I looked on the floor and there were a few wispy bits!  next time she comes I am going to insist she takes off 2 or 3 inches.  Its long and I never have it down anyway so as long as I can just twist it up on my head that will do me.

Hezzalady  - i also feel old and frumpy!  I bought some new clothes and shoes last week so maybe I will feel better when I actually get to wear them.

I now have some lovely white streaks in my hair and its all happening quite fast.  I like it!  I bought some shampoo called A Touch of Silver which is supposed to make the grey nice and tone down any dyed hair so it looks less brassy.  I tried it this morning and can report its lovely.  It makes your hair really soft and it feels better than its felt for ages.

The shampoo is purple which is a bit scary but it doesnt colour the hair purple.  Exciting times!  ;D

hairdresser is coming on Friday and I am going to make her cut off at least 2or 3inches.

Hairdresser has just cut off about 3” and washed and conditioned it in my Touch of Silver stuff. She says it is in excellent condition. I said cut as much off as you like, as long as I can twist it up on my head.  She has done a kind of french pleat and twisted the top up. She reckons another couple of months and all the colour will be out and she says I will be a lovely white shade. Something to look forward to.

Flax is amazing for the hair.  I take capsules and my hair has an amazing shine.  Once the grey has grown down to the top of the ears, the rest of the colour wont be as prominent.  I grew out some highlights.  For the first year, I had to keep lowlighting over them and then after a year it wasn't bad.  They're only just gone.  It's taken over 3 years to get them completely out and now I'm noticing a few greys at the front hairline

I've bitten the bullet... again to grow out my colour/dye. Last time I gave in to family's negative  comments.
I have long dark brown hair... well it was!
I stopped colouring it about 6 months ago... it grows slowly so goodness knows how long this will take... really don't want it cut short... I did get a few highlights put in to break up the badger line... I made sure the hairdresser understood that I didn't want them to my roots...
I'm not doing too bad at the minute... just get upset when family tell me I look old and ask me why I want to look old...
I tend to the it up and avoid mirrors and photos 😂

Hey daisydot I'm with you - not a natural blonde bt but the touch up before my cremation!  Going grey in places now but started dying my hair when I was 32 (when my mum died - she didn't approve of that sort of thing and she lived with us so I couldn't take the hassle)  Its been red, blonde and brown stripes - all shades of blonde but that does nothing for hair condition so I stopped, it wouldn't grow past my chin as it kept breaking.   It was short when I hit 40 because "everyone???" says long hair after 40 is a no no but the I got fed up and grew it long because I like it!  Its been red/brown for about 5 years but really it is mousey brown.  My husband helps me with off the shelf dye at a fiver every 6 weeks cos I'm too mean to pay a hairdresser.
We call him Vidal Campbell with his rubber gloves, curl comb for separation and his brush and dye pot!  Have to say he's ace and it works a treat.  I suppose at some point I am gonna have to tone it down a bit in case we go mutton lamb etc  :(

I've got loads grey in my blonde hair,
It's so fly away too.  >:(

I've decided to keep my hair in the ‘natural ‘ way  that it wants to go, and just grow it.
I've always parted my hair on the left side, going against my ‘natural ‘ parting on the right.
I just always thought I looked better with it that way.
But for the last 12 months or so, I'm finding it harder and harder to control it, it just wants to go
where it wants to, and that's from the right side., so I've decided to go along with it. :o
I haven't got the energy anymore to bother about it. So, sod it, it can bloody well go where it likes,
I don't care, but I'll have the last laugh if it continues to get on my nerves, I'll have it shaved off!
That'll show it, won't it? Lmao....  ;D ;D ;D

It's now 9 months since I coloured my hair and I like it.  Its grey from my forehead back to my crown now and I just twist it up and clip it. The clipped up bit is a brown!   My friend who I dont see too often said she loved my hair now. I pointed out the brown bit and she said her daughter has just paid a fortune to get her hair done like that - ombre effect!

I think once you are past the first inch or so its OK.  I am still using the Touch of Silver shampoo and conditioner.

There is a Canadian crime writer called Louise Penny. Look at her hair if you have dark hair and are going steely grey. She has a really neat bob cut and her hair looks super. I think going grey naturally is fab but you must keep it well groomed and cut regularly if possible. If your hair is long, I think it's easier to transition to grey if you take some inches off. Literally takes less time. Google Louise Penny and see what she looks like. Very elegant.

i am still getting nice compliments about my hair.  last week I met a hairdresser who was showing us swatches of hair colours and there was one exactly like mine!  My friend was with me getting her nails done and her hair has been grey for years but the back is still light brown.  The hairdresser was saying she could colour it all a grey shade using plant based dye.
