Title: Ok! Enough! These extra few pounds have to go!
Post by: Blakeygray on November 21, 2016, 07:29:49 AM
So I'm going to do the three day military diet to try and shift them.

Ladies I beg your indulgence.

I'm not expecting miracles but if I can just kick start my metabolism it'll do me the world of good.

I have no allergies, I'm not on any meds bar Tibolone,  I don't suffer from dizzy spells or anything,  hence I think it's ok to give it a punt.

I'm not advocating this to anyone else but I'm more likely to stick to the plan if I make my intentions public. So feel free to ignore me :)

Day 1 weight 12'6.

Wish me luck.

Is it this one?

Day 1 and 2 sound okay, but day 3 would break me. Seems odd to have so much ice cream!

Good Lord no, that'd kill me. It's this one.  I know it says British Heart foundation but also known as the three day military as well.

Loads of my friends have done this and as long as they keep doing it every 2 weeks they keep the weight off but sadly all bar one has now  put whatever they lost back on because its not sustainable long term.  I think if you are doing it for a wedding or something then its great way to drop half a stone very quickly but you cannot stay on the diet as its too extreme.  The 5/2 diet might be a better option long term???

I have lost 3 stones in 2 years but by the slowly slowly method. NEver more than one and half pounds a week and I have found because I have just reduced how much I eat with the occasional treat meal out I can maintain my weight loss.

For me the easiest bit is losing the weight and the hardest is keeping it off!

In my experience, the only way to keep weight under control is to cut out as much sugar as possible and eat a lot less permanently.  Getting enough exercise is also vital  - plenty of brisk walking is great. Short sharp diets can just muck up your metabolism.
The crash diet may be a good kickstart but you can never go back to eating the way you did before.  DG x

Yeah, probably need more than 3 days to make a difference. Walking and avoiding sugar certainly seems the wisest approach, as well as looking at portion sizes. The calories on that diet probably aren't much less than I normally consume to be honest, I just eat more fruit. I think it helps to live alone and not have snacks to tempt me.

It's just a case of input/ output.

We don't need as much food as we age but we need more exercise.

Just cut the carbs and the weight will come off quickly.....I lost over a stone and I can't exercise.  Mine came off slowly but if you can Excercise as well you will be fine.

Have a browse of the various exercise threads here.  We have a treadmill - but don't use it  :sigh: - for me it's lack of enthusiasm.  I do lots of gardening though, so fresh air, VitD and exercise in one go!

The most important meal of the day is breakfast.  Himself eats porridge which maintains him until lunch-time, I have a muesli mix which has made a difference so that I don't snack as much: B4 it was two rounds of toast.

How much home cooking do you do, i.e. meals from scratch?

I don't know anything about this plan, but IMO you need to find something that gives you a slow and steady loss and is sustainable long term. Diets that make claims of huge weight loss very quickly are at worst unhealthy and at best you are just losing water weight that will return almost immediately. You need to aim for roughly 1-2kg (about 2-4 pounds) loss per month.

I've lost 10kg (about 20 pounds) this year on Weight Watchers and it's extremely easy to follow because you still eat all your normal foods, but the points system encourages you to make the right choices of low sugar and low saturated fats. Don't fall into the trap of thinking you need to cut out carbs though. Good carbs are essential.

I still want to lose another 5kg, but I'm just maintaining at the moment because of the Christmas season coming up, but I'll crank things up in the new year.

The advice to it gradually is important. I cut out sugar as much as is possible following advice. The weight loss was too quick 11/2 stones on 2 months. My reward was lower glucose levels, down a dress size and yippeedoda gall stones! So eat healthily, smaller portions and yes cut down sugar, particularly refined, but do it slower than me, not so rigid.

We cook from scratch  90% of the time. A takeaway is a rarity.

Over the next three days I hope to manage my sweet tooth ie  I like sugar in my tea  and cheap  sweet wines like lambrini as opposed to cakes,  biscuits and sweets.

I just want to shift another fee  pounds and then. I'll be able start working out again without my knees feeling like they're going to snap.

Anyway day 2 and the scales say 12'4.

Motivation! It's what will get you there. I still get a pleasant shock when I see myself in the mirror. I do look far better in my clothes now. Pricey though! Had to buy new clothes. Still retail therapy is good!

My motivation was the threat of diabetes. Strong family history and I was warned that being cause there was little difference in measurement between my waist and narrow hips, I was in as great a danger as if I was obese. Difficult when friends thought I didn't need to lose any weight.

My Mother in Law weighed everything.  Each evening she would decide what she wanted to eat and weighed the appropriate amounts of butter, sugar etc. according to Weight Watchers.  The saucers went into the fridge and once they were empty, that was it for the day.  It meant that she could see what she was actually eating.  It worked *and* she kept the weight off.

Ok so after day 2; 12st 3.

I didn't do day 3  the  work's team lunch put paid to that,  so I'm doing it today.

The sugar and all things sweet cravings are going,  I'm down from 2 sugars in my tea to 1.

The sugar cravings do go quite quickly, don't they? I've not eaten any rubbish all month and really don't want to now. Social situations are awkward though - I've found that some people get strangely offended if you refuse cake.

Keep it up Blakeygray. I did think the idea of these diets was to do the 3 days at once so maybe having had a day off the weight loss might not be as much as you hope - but it's still there all the same ie some weight loss :)

Also to add to what has already been said. Yes it is about reducing sugars, but also unnecessary carbs as these are all metabolised into sugars!!! It is important to clarify and distinguish between low carb diets which is used as a blanket term to cover various types of diet. The true "low-carbers" are extreme - the eschew any form of carb whatsoever or drastically limit them - even those found in normal fresh foods like carrots! Instead they eat lashings of fat including fatty bacon, mayonnaise and cream - ugh all that fat - that would really upset my digestion!

What I mean by low carb is firstly eliminating all added sugars (most of the time) and concentrated sugars ie fruit is OK but only a small amount of juice or smoothies. In addition eliminating or drastically reducing most of the time all foods which are mainly carbs - ie bread, potatoes, pasta, rice, pastry, cereal etc but obtaining carbs naturally from foods such as vegetables ( other than spuds) and beans etc. Also drastically reducing fat - so, eating lean meat and fish, not using butter, keeping fried foods to a minimum but using some olive oil, and not avoiding oily fish avocados and coconut like some low fat diets. In others words if you just eat what you need from fresh unprocessed foods ( except for spuds) you can't go wrong. It does go without saying you need to limit alcohol.

I have done so many diets throughout my life and this latest is perfect for menopause as it controls blood sugar as well as helping weight loss. I  have to be on this permanently now in order to keep my weight low and I only have to take my eye off for a couple of days - have a few drinks - and the weight goes back on. However I'm not boring about it - I do have the occasional bit of cake and will defo eat choccies over Christmas and I like my G&T and a glass of wine!

Somewhere on the thread (can't see it now) someone said it's a question of input and output but actually although this is counter-intuitive - it is not! This is why weight-watchers is based on a points system and not total calories. They have even said something about this on their website ( well they did a couple of years ago or so). Different food types are metabolised differently so some foods you can actually eat to a higher calorific value than others if you see what I mean. I have never counted calories with any weight loss regime I have ever been on (I've never joined any slimming programme though) - and as long as you understand the principles and know when to stop eating ( when you've had enough!) you should not need to go hungry.

Hurdity x

I'm the same as you Hurdity, I have to stick to my regime all year round to keep my weight down, I just can't take my eye off the ball at all. Still, I'm happier and weigh less now that I did in my teens, 20s and early 30s.

Just adding to this discussion. I've lost 6 lbs in a month following the 5.2 diet (intermittent fasting) and eating a quality high protein/balanced good carbs diet... I've even been able to have wine (11% prosecco mainly)

My energy levels are increasing and I do feel as if I'm turning a corner....

hoping to get to my goal weigh of 57kg (down from 61 presently) safely and easily by January...

As always Hurdity yours is a  concise informative reply.

Yes this will have to be a permanent change. Thankfully most carbs bloat me to buggery so I only eat wholewheat pasta,  rice and bread but there's room for improvement in other areas.

 :-\ not white bread though ?  :-\

I had a worrying evening  :sigh: - I decided that I have put on weight because I could feel that my belt wasn't comfy, felt too tight …… however, having been to a facility in total darkness I had in fact tightened the belt to 3 notches instead of the usual 2  ::) >phew< travelling over an hour always makes me feel uncomfy around the waist so I was pondering on how to shed 'weight' - I will however, step on the scales this weekend, in case ……...

I tried the 3 day diet and by midday on the 2nd day I felt awful.Really bad headache, weakness, just awful. Didn't continue with it.
Perhaps I shouldn't have started it as I have an underactive thyroid. Learnt my lesson now :sigh: won't do it again.
