Title: Embarrassing Bodies
Post by: Jillymoo on March 20, 2011, 05:32:45 PM
Just seen in the TV Guide that this week's programme features women talking about and gauging how much menstrual blood they lose each month......should be interesting, as I think it's a subject we've touched on on here if I remember right?

I think the percieved, medical 'norm' is supposed to be around two tablespoons.
Yeah right.....during a bad month,I could probably fill the average hand basin (or so it feels  :-\ )

Anyhoos,think it's at 9pm Friday....CH4/5?

Sorry I wont watch this programme.  Why go on national TV to discuss something they too embarrassed to speak to a GP about.

You can report back to all of us who dont like this kind of TV.

Let us know.  I don't watch it either.  Can't understand why they can't go to their own GP.  I'd much rather do that than have my bits aired in public.

Thank goodness for that Eddie, ;D
no seriously I definitely will not be watching...when I have caught glimpses of it it leaves me feeling sick yuk.
If its called embarrassing bodies,,,why on earth do they go on national TV and show it all off :o it doesn't make sense.
At least Eddie does it in the privacy of her own home, isn't that right Eddie? ;) ;D

I don't understand how these people can be embarrassed and go on television but, on the other hand, this sort of programme may just help others who are embarrassed to talk to their doc or who just want to know if they are normal or not. So, I won't be watching it but there may be others out there who will benefit.

(I have got my clothes on by the way)  ;D

I'm dressed but not washed  ;) and I think that the programme is to help others who won't go to their doctors and also those that have but have been unable to get treatment which helps until they find these particular Doctors who actually listen.  I saw the trailer for this and thought I could fill a bucket at times  >:( the programme wasn't on last Friday  ??? .........

I do watch it when i remember or have not fell asleep. I also don't understand why they go on national TV and flash their bits, some people will do anything to get on the telly.
It can be an interesting program though.

If it guides people with problems to their own GPs and health can be improved then anything that helps must be a positive!

Should be interesting.

A few years ago when I was having terrible dysfunctional bleeding my Dr told me how to work out my blood loss by weighing sanitary wear and convering the grammes to mls :o  I can't remember the exact conversion I think it was 50 g equalled 80mls or something but I remember anything over 80mls is considered excessive bleeding.  It was hilarious having to remember to leave my kitchen scales in the bathroom ( and coming up with explanation to any visitor who used the loo ;D) and weighing the pad before using it then weighing it again after and believe me every one weighed different before use!
It did stop me panicking a bit but of coure could not weigh what went down the loo (sorry tmi!).

I have enough probs discussing that type of thing with my own GP as i am a private person suppose it was my upbringing loved my parents to bits but you didn't discuss that sort of thing only in whispers and the fact that i had 5 brothers so defo would not go on tv to talk about it. Must be a bit prudish but if others feel comfortable doing it up to them at least it educates us. 8)

I suppose it is educating, but how can they call it "Embarrassing Bodies" if they are willing to display it to the nation?  :-\

I have to agree.  The programme is embarrassing!!! ... These people must be paid rediculous amounts of money to air these problems. :-\

I was approached to go on the latest series as they are doing an article on early menopause.  I refused as I also would never flash my ladybits on tv.  They did however do a telephone with me to ask me set questions about how early menopause affects you so they could put my comments on the website etc.

They contacted More to Life a charity for childless women who knew I was going through early menopause.  The media co-ordinator gave them my details.

Did the Media Co-ordinator ask you first?

As for EB, if by people talking about their problems which may seem 'way out' to others it encourages sufferers to come forwards, then it has to be a 'good' programme.  Maybe the title could be better but if it means that people have a sneaky look-see  ;)

Yes as I have agreed to help with articles on infertility/health issues but they still check with me too.

Open Clinic Live was on this evening.  Two men with penis problems and a very young Surgeon who can help!  Another lady with vaginal problems and pain after sex which she has suffered for about a year  :-\ ....... she is being referred to a Gynaecologist.  I hadn't watched the Live programme before so found it interesting.  The 2 men had seen various GPs and Consultants but only this particular guy was offering hope ........

Nor me  ;) - but many people go there because their GPs or Consultants have reached the end of the road treatment wise.  One man has been told to live with his condition but the Consultant tonight told him that help is available.  In the same way as we have to fish around for info. this programme enables people to make more informed choices about their conditions.  It should also enlighten the medical world that help is out there, knowing where to find it for patients is often hard work!  I know that they attend Conferences but .........

On a slighly more embarrassing note: a man was complaining of an itchy 'bottom' and I note that before these flare ups (bladder problems) I itch high up in the back passage .......... could there be a connection  :-\

Emb Teens they dont show their bits boys or girls
I watched that the teen one and it gives them so much more knowledge
One girls labias were massive she was 18 and allowed it to be shown poor wee thing
She was standing and they were hanging down about 1inch She had the op they showed that but only that bit
She was thrilled after wards shed spent 5 years hiding and they didnt ask her to show them they just talked
As to payment I think I read some where that if an appt is needed they get Private treetment as in a few weeks wait
Same for any operation  it is paid for and the teeth ones but thats it NO money changes hands Wish i could remember?
I find it interesting and I saw the period one the small amount we actually loose when we think we are heavy was !
The girls weed in to a bottle funny shape one everytime they needed to go to see then how much blood is lost
They also had to keep a record over 3 or 4 days as to how many STS they wors none were allowed to use Tampons
It was amazing the results the girl who thought she bled like a stuck pig actually lost the least amount
But diff things for diff people interesting though and you can always look away xxx

I can see both points of view - on the one hand celebrity culture has a lot to answer for.  Everybody wants their 5 minutes of fame, even if it's just to flash their manky bits  ;D.  On the other hand, as CLKD says, if it helps somebody who has been too embarrassed to see their GP then it is a positive thing.

A mention on another topic here reminded me:

3 men had their poo examined.  One was told to increase his intake of pro-biotic as there wasn't enough bacteria in the sample he had provided.  Apparently the poo sample requires to show a lot more bacteria than initially thought .......... then our systems are 'topped up' enough.  Off to find the Actimel pot  ;)

I saw that too CLKD - although my GP advises that it is better to take the acidopholus capsules rather than the drinks - they contain far more of the probiotic.

Yes it does although I only take it if I have to use antibiotics in order to prevent thrush developing. I am sending you a link via pm which gives details of what it does etc.

I have diverticulosis and IBS. The capsules just help with good bacteria in your stomach.

It keeps the gut healthy which is really important for me.

It also keeps your bowels regular.....Sorry if TMI.

I usually have a compare on line to see if there are any good offers on.

Certainly without drinking at least 3 pots of Actimel daily my bowels slow up  >:(
Title: Re: Embarrassing Bodies
Post by: honeybun on April 25, 2013, 08:37:48 PM
There are very few active bacteria in Actimel although I guess it's better than nothing. Yogurt is much the same unfortunately.

You really need something quite strong to feel the true benefit.

It is probably the refined sugars - I find if I have junk days, i.e. cakes, biscuits, crisps - rather than 'proper' food - I feel bloated, as I do if I have too many canned soups during the week  :-\

Just going back to the original post, I personally love this programme, in fact I love all things medical. Plus it's how I learn not just for me but one day I may be able to help anther person.
I think really the name is wrong now as it I no longer just people with an embarrassing problem. Many many have been through the NHS mill for years and got nowhere but this programme gets results in return for a person agreeing to appear.
I remember well the case of a child with masses of varrucas who docs had given up on, the doc on the show diagnosed a rare disorder and she needed chemotherapy to save her. Left to the NHS she was likely to have died.
Title: Re: Embarrassing Bodies
Post by: CLKD on April 28, 2013, 03:51:56 PM
I can never understand why consultants don't follow up their patients via the NHS - i.e. people who have lost HUGE amoutns of weight but can't get the flabby remaining skin removed: that they need to go onto a programme in order to get the treatment 'finished' as it were  ::).  There are various conditions where the NHS seems to have given up on patients  >:(
Title: Re: Embarrassing Bodies
Post by: honeybun on April 28, 2013, 07:00:35 PM
A friend of mine went privately for stomach banding.
She then had a tummy tuck and a boon job on the NHS to get rid of excess skin. She had at that point kept the weight off for 3years.

We kind of lost touch.....Just recently I heard she had thyroid cancer but is doing ok.

Wonder if there is a link to obesity.
