Title: White mark on tongue
Post by: Losingtheplot on February 20, 2024, 02:41:36 PM
Hi

So I went for a check up at dentist today and he mentioned the white patch to the side of my tongue - he thinks it be caused by me biting the side of the tongue which I am not aware of doing, or the tongue catching on my teeth.  Its has been there a few weeks now I said I had thought it was an ulcer and feels sore.  The dentist said it could also be that.  I am to have a check up in 2 weeks and if it is still there be referred to dental hospital for a biospy.
I am in a bit of a daze as I hadn't expected any of this and quite honestly have just lived with the pain as it is always there especially when I eat.
I am now very worried! The dentist tried to assure me that it is quite possibly nothing serious but what if it doesn't clear up?

Your dentist is trained to check for anything untoward in the mouth.  He is following the correct procedure.  Did he suggest using 'bonjela' to ease any soreness?  Have U been eating kiwi fruits, I tried these in the New Year and my mouth took on lots of tiny very sore pimples.  Took 2 weeks B4 they eased.  'bonjela' helped.

If it doesn't clear then you will be referred for a biopsy to see if anything more needs to be done.  It is a worry.  Make a note of any concerns to discuss at your next visit.

Probably good that it hurts, it usually means it isn't sinister. I put salt on ulcers.

He didn't suggest me trying anything to help it which I find odd. Yes I've used Cosodyl in past thanks will try it again

You might not even need a biopsy Losingtheplot. The oral surgeon might just take one look at it and know straight away what it is.

I usually soak a bit of cotton wool with corsodyl and hold it on the sore bit for a minute or so. Works wonders.

Hi

It could be oral lichen planus.
I have a touch of it on my cheek on the inside of my mouth.
I had a biopsy years ago to confirm it.
I'm actually under the specialist division at my local dental hospital.  They keep check of it. Once every 12 months.
My only irritating thing about it is, is that, that side of my mouth can get quite dry and sore, so I use bonjela on it occasionally,  or a salt water rinse, the dentist is quite happy with that.
Xx

My dentist seemed to put my white lines inside my cheeks as me biting them??! Which I know I don't do and told him that

I have the lines on side of my inner cheek too. Didn't think i bite but do it in my sleep. Also got a couple of white lumps I've had for years from chewing and dentist said it's scar tissue.

Well. My white lines on my inner cheek was picked up by my old dentist years ago.
He said he thought it was lichen planus. But to make sure he'd do a biopsy.
Results came back. He was right.

Mine aren't white just the same colour as my inner cheek and raised. Think mine are from chewing. They're not there all the time.

Same as you Deirdre. I have some that are there permanently, and then new ones which come and go. Soem ate flrsh coloured,  some are white. Mouth tissue, like everywhere else, becomes thinner and more sensitive to damage than when we were younger. Particularly in meno when things dry out!

So the white mark is still on my tongue and my whole mouth is so sore and has been for months and months possibly a year!  Looked like the white mark was going but it is as bad as before.  Getting my check up at dentist for it today so see what he says.  Maybe peri related.  I know I eat food such as pickles then my mouth gets even worse.  I have ordered some vit b12 supplements so hope these help

Perhaps the vinegar from the pickles is drying your mouth out? It sounds like dry mouth to me. Mine was like that a big chunk of last year while I was trying to get settled on hrt. I'd wake up with dryness and a burning feeling. It coincided with getting a number of mouth injuries that I panicked about, white mark under my tongue etc. Looking back, I think it was all due to sore, dry, burning mouth.

Morning.  My mouth burns immediately with bananas, chocolate, if I use toothpaste containing sodium laurel sulphate.

Let us know how you get on.

If you've had this for months and it's no better the dentist should be referring you now to a specialist to sort out for you. You shouldn't have been suffering this long when it could have been resolved a long while ago.
