I've had Ovestin prescribed and used it for 2 nights running. Still got the burning feeling.
Ok so I know it's only 2 nights use but I am really down as I feel like I will never have sex again.
I have been told by the doctor to bin the applicator and rub the cream in once a day at night for 2 weeks and then every other day.
Is this a normal dose? Shouldn't it be more frequent throughout the day?
Really down today x
-
Did your care provider not explain how to use 'ovestin' correctly? The idea is to insert with the applicator into the vagina, press and release the product. This should be for 2-3 weeks, every night. Then 1 drops down to every 3rd or 4th night and 5th or 6th night. Once the vaginal area is plumped up the feelings of needing to pee and soreness will go.
If you need take a 'nurofen' 3 times a day for 3 days which eases those nippy feelings at the end of the pee. 4 me it was like razor blades :o up there , 'ovestin' worked within days.
-
OH! do read the threads on bladder issues and vaginal atrophy on the forum too ;-)
-
No. She said dont use the applicator and just rub it in. But thats whst I'm confused about.
Why do they give you the applicator if she said notbto use it.
Does anyone use lube as well as using the Ovestin? Should I be using lube when I masturbate?
-
Don't bin the applicator, use as CLKD said every night for 2 or 3 weeks, then drop down to 2 or 3 times a week. Externally you could use a vaginal moisturiser, perhaps one of the Yes products. Two nights is not nearly enough to make a difference. The vaginal and vulval tissues need some time to get plumped up from the oestrogen, and then you should start to feel a difference. Patience is the thing, as VA will have been developing for a while before you ran into trouble, so it takes a while for the products to work.
Incidentally, my GP also told me just to use it externally, but this is b*ll*ocks, GPs often don't know much about VA.
As mentioned, use a decent lube and/or moisturiser. Have a look at the Yes website.

Your GP needs to learn a bit about ladies issues !
She was probably muddled with other products that we use on the outer labia ............ do look at the 'yes' and 'sylc' product websites. You may need a lubricant until the 'ovestin' makes a difference which should be by about 3 weeks ;-)
-
Yes use it internally with the applicator otherwise it will do little for that burning feeling. Good advice from the other posts.
-
Goodness. Thank you all so much. Ifeel so much better now.
I just couldn't get my head around not using the applicator. It just seems obvious that the product goes into the vagina.
You know when you get the feeling that something isn't going to work, that's the hopeless feeling I have had for two days. I will use the applicator tonight.
And I'm just going on the Yes site. Just to double check, can I use a moisturiser that I get from the Yes site in the daytime to relieve the burn? Until the ovestin works?
-
Use the applicator every night to insert the 'ovestin'
Sometimes ladies use 'yes' or similar in the morning to ease dryness. If there is a burning nip at the end of a pee take 'nurofen' or your usual pain relief to relax the bladder.
-
Just seen the yes vm product. Is this ok to use in the daytime for moisturising and then use the ovestin applicator at night?
Obviiously I know there are no guarantees that it will work for me but is this the kind of thing that's the norm?
So glad I asked on the forum. Feel so much better x
-
Vaginal atrophy is 'common' during The Change.
Can be eased by regular treatment.
Yep - moisturiser in the morning and at lunch time if necessary and 'ovestin' with the applicator at night.
-
Thank you x x x all of you.
You've saved my life today x
Been so down. Really been a struggle today x but I feel like there is light at the end of the tunnel today x
Been suffering now for 4 weeks. Been prescribed loads of thrush teatment and I've just had enough of not getting anywhere. Plus started a new job two weeks ago. Been a rubbish time x
Thanks again xxx

Yes vaginal moisturiser is out of stock.
Anything else you can recommend? X
-
which company is out of stock?
-
Yes site. Why can I get it from anywhere else? X
-
'sylc' site? You may get free samples ;-)
I find KY Jelly useful.

Poor you starting a new job 2 weeks ago and this to put up with. For over a year now I use ovestin internally alternate nights and the other nights Boots own brand vaginal moisturising gel. It's on the shelf and comes with an applicator like ovestin. I also use a bit of ovestin externally when needed. It's finding what is right for you. Really hope things improve as it's a miserable time till you get sorted. X
-
Hello Chihuahuachick
My friend gets her YesVM on prescription but I buy mine online. Boots also sell Replens and Sylk vaginal moisturisers so you may want to try one of those until YesVM becomes available.
Take care.
K.

Just ordered from stressnomore. Thanks for letting me know where to get it.
Miserable today. At work, burning.
Put some canesten hc on as it's all I have.
Hopefully it works x
-
Vaseline would be far better than 'caneston' which isn't for the outer area. When I used it for a suspected thrush problem, I spent the next few hours in a cool bath as it burnt so badly.

Canesten HC is a cream, CLKD. It is for external use. As well as the antifungal ingredient it also contains a smidge of hydrocortisone which might help the burning in the short term 🙂.

:thankyou:
I would stay well clear of it, even so ::)
-
My doctor recommended zinc and castor oil cream for babies for your external bits. A bit messy but quite soothing.
-
Can anyone tell me about sex with this burning problem?
An update of where I'm at: ovestin applicator before bed, applying canesten throughout the day and Ive got Yes VM due to be delivered.
But what about sex. How long do I wait, do I wait until I feel no burning or could I have sex with lubricant, not that I feel like having sex with the burning!
Do I always use a lubricant when I have sex even when the burning has gone? What lubricant do I use.
Any advice would be really appreciated. Don't know what I would have done without this forum. I'm so grateful x
-
Have sex when you feel ready, and when it feels comfortable. No harm in using lubricant always with sex, it's what you feel confident with. I like sylk lubricant. I couldn't face sex for ages when atrophy struck, it was just too stressful, but now things are ok and I enjoy making love again.
-
Thanks everyone x
Well. The cream on regularly, the canesten is helping.
Just been to the loo and thrush type discharge.
Cannot get my head around this, it changes day to day and hour to hour sometimes x
-
Really hope you feel better soon. These things just take your life over. X
-
Don't they just. Feel fine now.
Unbelievable though. The way that just started earlier.
So looking forward to getting this moisturiser and using that probably 4 times a day. Anything to get this sorted out.
Again, don't know where I would be without the forum and its members.
Just being able to turn to the forum when I am at work is such a comfort.
Hopefully the moisturiser will be here tomorrow. I don't like tonkeep on using the canesten.
-
Well I think I'm getting this burning under control!!!!
I say think, because everytime I do think I am getting it under control, something changes.
I have used the ovestin religiously, and I have moisturised too.
Still waiting for the Yes moisturiser to be delivered so until then it's the canesten hc.
Thanks again for all of yiur help x
-
As the VA treatment begins to work there may be a discharge ;-) - what goes up etc.. I never have any as I insert at night ........
Keep up with the regime even when the area begins to feel better!!!
-
A good tip I saw on here for if the Ovestin is burning is to mix it in with a little Olive and Bee moisturiser. Maybe this would work as well with the Yes. Lots of women on here swear by Yes but it didn't do much for me. Maybe I had a duff batch.
Good luck 🤞
-
Yes never suited me. I tried a bit on my arm first and my skin came up all red and a bit sore so it never got near my bits!
-
Well last night was the two week mark of ovestin every night. Now its every other night.
I think I am seeing an improvement. But it's slow and unreliable.
But some progress is better than none, so can't complain.
I have noticed that when at work and I'm walking around I have more burning, must be friction. So when that eases, that should be an indication that things are getting better x
-
If you find symptoms creeping back then go back to nightly. If you wear a thong, ditch it ;)
-
Yes, it can take quite a long time to get VA under control. Like CLKD says, go back to nightly if you need to, or just extend the loading period to three weeks, then try every other night. Re the walking around, I always found that to cause extra friction and discomfort and would need a top up of moisturiser. (Thong CLKD? Is that some kind of medieval torture device? ;D)

-
;D. I think that they are .......... they can cause all kinds of feminine hygiene problems :-X. give me a chastity belt any day ;-)
If inner labia feel dry add 'vaseline' or 'KY Jelly' B4 exercise then rinse on return.
-
Thanks for the advice. I think I will keep going for the tbree week period. Just convinced thst it has only just started working.
Know I've said it before and I will say it again, don't know what I would have done without this forum.
I tell you something else, I can really see Doctors being redundant in some form in the future. I've had to wait until 17 August to get a telephone appointment!!!!!
And I wasn't given great advice last time from my Doctor. Just to remind you, she told me to rub the cream in the outer vagina, so why ever does it come with an apllicator. Makes sense it has an applicator as its an internal medication. Thank goodness you set me right on tge forum, otgerwise i doubt I would be this far ahead.
-
Listen to your body, if it's sore continue every night for another 7-10 days. ;-)
-
It really takes perseverance. At times in the past I thought I'd never feel ok down there.
-
It takes months, doesn't it? And in the meantime we develop all kinds of strategies to help :)
-
Well I've carried on and used the ovestin. Into my third week.
I think it was the right thing to do. I feel better for getting advice and giving it a third week.
It will be interesting to see how it goes today at work, that's when the burning starts to get worse, must be the friction from moving around.
-
Well burning at work today.
Put some canesten on its ok now.
Just didsapointing.
-
It does wax and wane initilally. Not sure about 'caneston' though :-\. Don't despair, put plenty up there tonight ''-)
-
Thanks for the reply.
I do appreciate it x
Yes, I have plunged as I call it.
Hopefully tomorrow it will be better. Hopefully is a word that I use a lot regarding this symptom getting better x
-
Definitely friction now that is affecting me.
Friction from walking.
Lets hope I'm on the mend x
-
Well had less soreness today from the friction at work.
So lets hope a corner has been turned x
-
Great news. It's good days and bad days, but after a while the good outweigh the bad.
JP x
-
Thanks for the encouragement.
I need it at the moment x
Can anyone tell.me if they still keep on moisturising after the burning has gone?
Obviously I will still use the ovestin internally.
-
Yes, I generally use moisturiser externally. It's like you'd use moisturiser on your face, you wouldn't just stop. Well, I wouldn't! It all depends how you feel I guess, as everyone's different.
JP x
-
Yes keep as moist as possible all the time. I always drink plenty of water too and that helps. Try to stay positive. It's all really difficult. X
-
Thank you x
Yes I will keep on with the moisturiser. It makes sense. Think I was dreaming thinking I could get away with it!!!!!
Also while I'm here, if I go on the combined pill would it stop the vaginal dryness? Or is it likely too. The doctor wants me to go on it to help with the risk of osteoporosis?
-
Thank you x

Sorry but I don't know anything about the combined pill and its effects on VA. Someone here will know.

Thanks for the replies x
Been better today again. Thank goodness x
-
It's been three weeks since I started with ovestin. So have started to administer the cream every other night now x
Thursday at work was better. No burn from the friction of walking x
So lets hope that this is the beginning of the end of the burn.
Still moisturising, will keep that up.
I'm grateful for the advice given to me to keep using the ovestin every night for a third week. I'm sure it's really helped.
-
Ovestin every other night now.
Still moisturising about 4 times a day.
No burning at work in the day. Not tried sex yet but it would have to be with the lube. Last time I had sex I ended up.bleeding so I'm a bit weary to try it at the moment.
We did try foreplay and I burned afterwards, but it went away after an hour and it was ok from then on.
Just hope that I am ok with sex.
-
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!UPDATE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Still using ovestin. Probably down to once every couple of nights now.
Still use a bit of canesten HC.
So in general day-to-day basis, it's kind of gone all together.
Now been prescribed ridgevidon pill to try and help with the HRT replacement. Taken 3 tablets so far.
Noticed that my indegestion and sick feeling I get with it is back. This was back just before I started the pill so doubt its the pill.
Gone back on my gaviscon tablets and they are helping.
Just so down about the indegestion returning. But trying to remain positive and hopefully when I've been back on the gaviscon for a couple of weeks it will be ok.
Also my histamine levels are up as my eyes are itching a lot.
Hopefully this rigevidon will help.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated and a I feel like I need a bit of input from my friends at the forum xxxx
