Title: Hay fever
Post by: shrosphirelass on July 03, 2019, 08:04:34 PM
Has anyone else developed hayfever since they have been peri / menopausal or is it just another coincidence?

Most definitely!  :(

I've gone from getting occasional sniffles in summer, to terrible hayfever / allergy symptoms most of the year but its much worse at the moment (constant sneezing, sore eyes, itchy red skin).

Recommended by NHS allergy clinic to take 4 fenofexedine per day, eye drops and nasal spray.
After surgical menopause, so many things seem to set off quite bad allergy symptoms for me, washing powder, perfumes, cats, none of which bothered me before.

Worse is that just 1 glass of wine can give me really bad hayfever symptoms  :( :(

I used to get a few sniffles and itchy eyes very occasionally, and some years nothing at all.   This year it has been horrific!  Constant crippling headaches/sinus problems and eyes so itchy I struggle to focus (and this is in spite of the fact that I am on a daily antihistamine, steroid nasal spray and eye drops!).   I've never had hayfever so bad!!

Since menopause I am now also suddenly allergic to everything - have to buy everything fragrance free.

Me too. Hayfever as a child had to take inhaler as it made me wheezy, grew out of it by my teens. About 4 years ago out the blue started with really bad hay fever & it has continued, using a few different antihistamine treatments to try & keep it at bay. It's awful cause having to make a choice between sleeping with the windows open for cool air or shutting them & tossing/turning all night cause of heat even with fan on. >:(

I think hayfever is just generally terrible this year.  I haven't taken daily antihistamines in like forever, but every day it's as if my eyes are on fire.  Was in a motorbike shop last weekend chatting to the young chaps, and they're also massively suffering this year.  Strangely, or perhaps not, swimming seems to really help, I think the chlorine must strip all the allergens out.

I think these allergies are becoming more common - nowt like that when I was a child.  Until the 1970s when a Consultant told me to go to Oz  ::).  Dusting throughly is important, I noted last week that I get symptoms at Mum's 'cos we haven't hoovered for months ....... whereas I never had them there.  So going to buy an industrial hoovery-thingy 2 take there ........

Oil seed rape triggers my dry throat and wheeziness - a plant grown in recent years.  I am very aware of that in particular.  A little Vaseline beneath the nostrils helps. Apparently.

I use this too. My sinus type headaches are always worse in the summer, never equated them with hayfever (my headaches generally have been cyclic and hormone related) until a friend suggested it may be a contributor.

This year has been bad. Apart from the headache and sore eyes Ive had a really sore throat, not scratchy just sore, but I'm sure it's hayfever as it goes away and then comes back when the pollen levels are very high.

Hormones seem to heighten everything!

Hi,
Just wondering if anyone takes any non pharmaceutical products for their Hayfever.  I think I had my first experience of Hayfever yesterday and, although I have antihistamines in the house, I am open to more natural remedies.

Many thanks 🙂

My daughter tried Vaseline up her nose but that didn't work but she got one of those air purifiers, switches it on at night with the window shut and she's fine, obviously doesn't help if you go outdoors mind you

My gosh, in lockdown and indoors.  Phew I don't think my sanity would last.

Might have to resort to the tablets but so far okay today.

Pirineze nasal spray works for me,if my nose would stop running for 5 minutes I'd be happy

So far I've been OK.  It's the itch on the roof of my mouth that wakes me with tongue scratching  >:( as well as the cleft in my chin which is where it all begins.  Now how is that relative to allergies?  :-\

I was just going to start a thread myself as wondered if peoples symptoms have ramped up. I started to feel it last week, tell tale signs of sore eyes, but this week everytime I go out it gets the back of my throat and the last two days I have had a bad one sided headache, which I'm guessing is related as it feels like Im blocked up. Im taking mild one a days and a steroid nasal spray. Doesn't seem to make a lot of difference, except for drying me out generally. I'm going for a long walk this afternoon so am going to try the vaseleine up my nose, can't do any harm!

I found 'beconase' really useful but didn't use it daily as it dried the nostrils = soreness  ::).

Maybe this is what masks were designed for  ::)

Thing with some nasal sprays is that you can only use them for a max of 7 days at a time because they will start having the opposite effect  ???

You've still got a nose then? ;D

I think the rebound is from the decongestant sprays. The steroid ones, like beconaise don'e have the same effect, you can take for months. StellaJane is there a good technique for spraying  as I sometimes get bleeding and I know the ear nose and throat guy said it was because I wasn't doing it correctly.

I didn't get allergic rhinitis until I married, it was thought that I was allergic to my husband  :D.  I moved from a dry area to one that had 100s' " rain per year  ::) ......

Hi ladies,

I've had hay fever bad lately after a windy day. I can use my nose spray for up to 6 months at a time, my doctor is happy for me to use it longer.

Another great natural product is a neti pot. It looks like a little kettle, you can buy them from the health food shop. I boil water and mix in 1/2 teaspoon of salt, cool down to room temperature. Lean over the sink tilt head forwards and pore through one nostril, stop do other nose, give your nose a good blow.
Works really well, google for information.

A couple tips always use boiled water, you can't use the neti pot for more then three weeks at a time. When I'm at a bad time of year I have to use spray from the chemist. But usually I can manage with the neti pot for 6 to 9 months a year.

Plus another positive once you got your pot it's very cheap to use. I've had my pot now for 10 years.

When my DD was younger she had lots of problems with ear and sinus infections and her ENT consultant recommended we use a neti pot on her. Very tricky to use on a little one, but we all got used to using it and it really helped her. He also recommended Sterimar spray and we all use that, even now.

There's definitely something with the salt water, when I lived in Aberdeen, never once had I drippy nose syndrome (medical term ;D) moved to Wiltshire and that's when it all started, the salty sea air of Aberdeen worked wonders, you could all move there if you like  ;D

Interesting - I've never though of hayfever being linked to the menopause before, but I started suffering from hayfever for the first time ever when I was 40 - a couple of years after menopausal symptoms kicked in really badly.  I'd never had so much as a sniffle until then - I remember not being able to understand why this 'head cold' kept coming and going!

Bugga - nearly all year my rhinitis has been quiet  :-\ ....... no stuffy nose, no snuffling or sniffing: air is cooler and I feel as though I have a r-sided polyp and nose is running almost constantly  >:(.  I hadn't realised until this morning when I began sneezing, that I've been symptom free for months!

I don't show allergens to anything.  I do have sensitivity to cat dander, didn't find out until my cats had died.  However, the allergic rhinitis didn't begin until we moved from the Fens [25" rain annually] to Wales [100s of inches  ;D].  If DH keeps the bedroom hoovered regularly I don't get symptoms.  A sudden change of temperature will start runny nose and sneezing, i.e. when I walk into a restaurant from cool air.  Very embarrassing.
