Did any of your schools have 2 mins. silence at 3.00 p.m.?
I sat quietly in the camper listening to the silence on Radio 2.
-
I don't know about the silence, but I know a couple of schools which had a special day commemorating it.
-
Many schools close earlier up here on a Friday, so not sure if they did anything or not.

I watched it on BBC1 & cried - as I always do when I hear The Last Post - reminds me of my Dad :'(

I know what you mean Cazikins
I remember my mum telling me of her mixed emotions over VE Day where everyone was so happy and relieved but she knew her husband wouldn't be coming home as he had been killed in Singapore and she felt almost guilty that she was celebrating.

My mum & dad married Victory in Europe week. Mum used heaps of coupons to get lace for her dress. Bridesmaids wore hand me down dresses, altered to fit. My mum's matron of honour's dress couldn't zip up as she was a larger lady, so wore bolero jacket to cover up the gape. :)

We were asking my mum what she did on VE day.
Sadly she just can't remember.

Think my mum & sisters headed into town centre to join the celebrations.

Anyone watching TV tonight?
Did anyone hear the celebratory bells at 11.00 a.m. ?
-
Nope and nope! ;D

I don't know if anyone watched the documentary on the dark side of Hitler's personality, the other evening. When you think of the VE celebrations in the context of what had come to an end, it's hard to put it into words. The thought that one little man can cause a tragedy on that scale is just about beyond description. :'(

I tried to watch the programme about Himmler a couple of weeks ago but it was old film reel in German with over-titles.
Remember though that Hitler dragged Germany out of the mire following the 1st WW. He organised housing, jobs etc., brought hope to the people of Germany at that time. However, power can make people lose humanity :'(.
I was really disappointed in the BBC last night - I began listening to Radio2 coverage of the Event in Horse Guards then switched over, to find that it was a recording - about 20 mins. behind what I had been listening to >:( …….
