Title: How fit are you
Post by: honeybun on April 14, 2014, 12:57:21 PM
I realised this morning that I am not fit at all.

I can walk a couple if miles without any problem but that's about it. This morning because the weather is nice we decided to make a start painting the garden fence. It's wooden and about seven foot tall. There was a bit of clearing up to do first, pulling ivy off it and cutting back a very large plant. Started about 10am and by lunch time I was exhausted. So much so I had wobbly legs.
I did this fence three years ago and I'm sure I was not so tired then. My arm aches and my knees ache and we have miles of the thing left to do   :(

I am shocked at my general fitness or lack of and have not got a clue how to improve it. I think of myself as quite active but oh dear my stamina is just terrible.

I know I am not as fit as I was, the reason I am sure is that I have stopped walking as much as I did, I keep saying to myself I must start again, another reason is that at this time of year when the trees start getting leaves and blossom my allergies start and I get a heavy chest  if I forget my Beconase when I go out.

HB I think you are doing OK, what you did this morning would exhaust anyone. Don't forget we are emerging from Winter, once you build up your vitamin D from the sun, you will have more stamina.

I can relate to you both  ::)

I am the same. I have no energy or stamina any more. I did 3 hours in the garden today, most of it kneeling down and could probably have done the same amount of work in an hour a few years ago. I blame it on the beta blockers I am taking but to be honest, I think it has more to do with how little I do these days compared to in the past. Use it or lose it is bang on the nail I think. I do intend to be more active this coming summer but.................

A few years ago I would have spent 2 long days in the garden getting it tidied up for spring but this year I did a week doing 2-3 hours every day..........

I can do a lot more if I have a decent nights sleep. I am always on the go as I do for mum as well so maybe I expect too much.
I love my garden but just the thought of how much more fence there is to paint makes my heart sink. I only have two days at home together in a week and one of those is shopping day. What I really need is an extra day somewhere in the week.
 ;D

I think your idea of spreading it out is a good one bramble. I always forget that there is another day.

It is probably too late now that you have started but I always use Butinox paint on my fences - it does not need repainted for 5-8 years! Expensive but worth it.

We've got our fence to do this year. Kinda hoping hubby will do it this time. I loathe it with a passion. As for energy, what's that? I have no enthusiasm or energy for things nowadays.

Oh so glad to be sat down now. Down to mum's tomorrow. Not much chance of a rest there. Back to cooking for three now that daughter is home. Also back to cooking for mum  ::). Knew that would happen.

Perhaps it's not surprising I am tired when I am constantly trotting between two houses.

Wish I had known about that paint. We are using Ronseal which is good but does not last that long. It's all the trees and bushes that have to be cut back and I have a huge rambling rose. Hubby thinks we can just bend it back. Guess who will be holding it  ;D

Oh dear, I am so dreadfully unfit and a little too chubby for my liking! I am currently trying to feed my son up, unfortunately, I am the one putting the weight on!!

y husband recently repainted our garden fencing too. I didn't have to help because he's a decorator  ;) But we have loads of things climbing up the fencing and he thought I could just pull them off and put them back  ::) I spent some time fighting with climbing roses, honeysuckle, wigelia etc.

I love walking and can walk for ever as long as its flat. But the slightest hint of a hill or steps  and I'm done for. I just can't get up them without puffing and panting and my legs hurt too.

I am not fit. I don't enjoy formal exercise - it has to be something I like such as walking or gardening. But of course that's not  regular daily exercise which is what I really need.

I do rather like the feeling of tiredness after a good day on the garden or allotment as it feels like "good tiredness" if you know what I mean. I don't like the aching knees the next day though!

I wasn't aware of a connection between Vitamin D and stamina - but what is he evidence for this?  I'm interested as I take Vit D tablets to help with absorption of supplementary calcium.

Shame about your mum's food HB. Thought M&S would have done the trick. What's not to like about it?

We used to use Cuprinol on our fence until neighbour, who was a painter & decorator, told us not to waste our money! He recommended B&Q creosote. Been using it ever since. Mind you it needs redoing every 3 years or so. Must look out for Butinox though.

Vitamin D3 is what you should be taking, I take 2,000 IU daily. I don't take it with calcium but do take magnesium.

My sister had her Vitamin D levels tested ordered by her GP and they were very low, she was prescribed Calci Chew Forte D3. she is not on HRT.

Of cause its a personal decision, I do my research come to my own conclusions and do what I think best for me, others may think differently.

Google vitamin D3 stamina.

Nothing works better then healthy sun exposure though, I cut down on my D3 in the summer months.

Hi

Thanks for the links.  I'm prescribed Calchichew-D3 Forte too (because I'm on an aromatase inhibitor) and I also take extra Vitamin D.  2800IU per day total.  My stamina levels have deteriorated in the past 4 years or so despite trying various strategies suggested by consultants, nurses and other health professionals.  Perhaps my stamina would be even worse if I weren't dosing up on Vit D, might mention it to my oncologist at my upcoming check-up.

Good weather here today for healthy sun exposure  :)

(Sorry I can't add to the discussion about fence painting, we have a hedge around our garden  ;))
