Title: Varicose Vein Surgery & being on HRT
Post by: Bring me Sunshine on April 25, 2019, 06:43:07 PM
Hi girls

Please may I ask if anyone has had laser surgery for varicose veins and been told to stop hrt for 4 weeks before the surgery and 2 weeks after the surgery.  Panicking as having been ill with depression and anxiety for almost a year back in 2017  I was only well again once I started hrt particulary oestrogel 3 pumps a day.  Scared to come off but the veins in one place are classed as severe and wont get better without surgery.  The reason they want you off the hrt is due to the risk of Deep Vein Thrombosis. Has anyone had to have this surgery?  I saw there was a post on this topic back in 2017 by "wagon" but there was no update as to what happened.  Appreciate any advice.  Thank you.

Hi,

the Nice guidline are here :  https://bnf.nice.org.uk/treatment-summary/sex-hormones.html.  I would have a conversation with your GP/ consultant perhaps about your worries. Someone may come along and post that has been in the same situation.

Thanks so much for your replies girls.  The veins dont look bad but are so itchy and I work as a gardener and get bitten on them all the time!! My late dad had them too!  The information you sent through pepperminty was really informative and I have taken a copy of it to mention to the Dr who is ringing me tomorrow.  Bit scary to come off hrt albeit for 6 weeks when it has worked so well but its all a balancing act this health thing isnt it.  Thanks again!

Hi if you are on transdermal hrt then I don't think you have to stop it. X

It doesn't make any difference which method of delivery you are on I'm afraid. The risk of a blood clot is still raised.

Hi there

Just an update....

The doctor rang this morning and said on NO ACCOUNT must I come off the hrt for the surgery to my varicose veins, before or after.  He said a small dose of heparin would alleviate any risk of DVT and if the vascular consultant wasnt happy he must do a bit of homework and speak to a hrt specialist first before he tells women to come off hrt.  The doctor was adamant that I must not come off the hrt.

So I shall take that information to the consultant when I ring on Monday and will keep you updated on this one......thanks again!
