Title: Pop Concerts - who have you seen/would still like to see
Post by: Joyce on March 05, 2013, 01:13:57 PM
I was running through these in my head this morning as I walked home from my swim. Realised I'd been to more than I thought.  Who have you seen in concert over the years? We all have quite a varied taste in music on here so could be interesting or not as the case may be.  ::)
Here's my list.

Cliff x 2
Gilbert O'Sullivan - skived off school to get tickets to find half the school in the queue. Well it was nearing the end of exams and most teachers didn't check to see where we were.  ;)
Don McLean
Gordon Giltrap
Brian Adams x 3
Chris Rea x 2
Neil Young
Jason Donovan - queued from 5.30 in the morning so that daughter wouldn't be disappointed.
All Saints - stood at back with 100's of parents whilst kids were down the front. My son fancied one of the band!
M People
Travis
Take That - with daughter in the 90's
Simple Minds x 2
Stranglers x 2
Cold play
REM
Ian Anderson
Ray Davies
Gary Glitter - not my proudest moment. It was Christmas and hubby thought it would be good for a laugh. He was rubbish!
Paco Pena

Would love to see the following

Fleetwood Mac but prices are prohibitive!
Tom Jones
I'm sure I'll think of more.  ;)

I've never really had much of an urge to go to concerts (certainly not 'pop' concerts!).  I saw Tammy Wynette (she was amazing) and I've seen Don Williams 3 times (beyond words - such a huge shame he's not playing the UK anymore, but he's not a spring chicken, so I'll forgive him).  I have been to 2 Bryan Adams concerts - thoroughly enjoyed both, although my friend persuaded me to go standing for the first one (it was only about 5 years ago!), so we arrived early to be as close to the front as possible - 3 hours of sitting on the floor outside the entrance to the MEN saw us on the second row!  But after standing there for a further 3 hours, I could hardly move!  So last time I insisted on a seat!

So... what bands are you going to see... I just wondered how many of us still go to watch live concerts and whether they are all the "golden oldies" or how many of us like new music too? There is a wealth of talent performing every night across the country in our pubs and clubs.

I used to get Concert tickets from my parents and grandparent to see anyone I wanted (guilt on parents side)
My family was always musical My Gag joined up the RAF at 29 married with 2 children in 1939 one 10 one 13
Now he didnt have to go but he did He was a Warrant officer  transfered and joined ENSA
Before the war he had his own band he was a drummer it was  called  The Jack Curphey Band you can google it

My friend wanted me to go and see the Who in July.   Its more her era than mine, but I can't go because I will be away. I would like to have gone to the Isle of Wight festival in 1970, because a lot of people went locally and there was a great line up that year.  What was Jim the lead singer like in the Doors Suzi?  Wasn't he hot before he grew the beard and became overweight?. :-*

I have seen Groove Armada, who are fairly recent, compared to the others ;D  Also Steve Knightly who is in House of ...something or other...can't remember.  The bands locally in pubs are good, but they seem to play the oldies e.g.. Hi Ho Silver Lining!!!
Mumford and Sons are popular and good and also I like some of the hip hop I recently heard in Barbados (not sure the correct terminology these days). I also like Jake Bugg

It's a bit strange the first time you go to see younger bands as it can seem that you are the oldest one there but I much prefer watching young men than old men!  ;D  As I said before I am putting Biffy Clyro on my "to do" list but only if they play a smaller venue.

Tickets for Fleetwood Mac start at around £56 for the London gig although you are a long way back but the atmosphere will still be good I would think.

I know what you mean CLKD. Can you do theatres? It's not like you will be standing in a crowd or in the mosh pit. You will be seated.

Hurdity, I know the Larmar tree festival! because of living very near there, but haven't been. A colleague of mine goes to the Womad festival every year. Its somewhere near Malmesbury. Last year Robert Plant's new bluegrass band was on there.  Van Morrisson used to be on at the Larmar tree  - just remembered I've seen him too.  :D

I'd love to see Fleetwood Mac but prices for the Rolling Stones were ridiculous!

When we went to The Monsters of Rock concert at Castle Donnington in 1984, my mate Rosie insisted we pushed our way to the front by the stage, presumably in the throng of the mosh pit?? ;D It was a nightmare because we were staring at Dave Lee Roths tight leopard skin crotched leggings being squashed to death, whilst people were throwing plastic bottles of urine around the crowds!!

I ended back stage completely by accident, because I had wandered out of the festival.   I remember asking the bouncers where the toilet were, and they asked me if I had an invitation, and I was busy looking for my ticket in my pockets of my tight faded jeans with the zips up the side they let me in! Everyone was clambering the walls trying to sneak in, yet, I got in without trying because I was too sloshed to realise what I was doing. All the stars and Picadilly radio were there, queueing up for the toilet. This festival in 1984 is actually on u-tube!

It's hard to track down any appearances at Granada Studios Suzi but they did play four gigs at The Roundhouse which was filmed by Granada Studios for a documentary film - The Doors are Open. That footage is online. That was in 1968 and they were supported by Jefferson Airplane.

Don't like Van Morrison's songs  ::)

Can't do theatres either these days.  The feeling of being trapped remains.  We ordered end of row seats to see Black Mambazo 5 years ago but I was trapped against a wall - wrong end of row  >:(  ::) and I had to leave half way through the first half.  The deep voices reverberated through my chest and made me queasy  :-\ and I had wanted to see them for years ........

So I no longer look at the 'what's on' programme when it arrives ......... <sign>

Hey pixie - fancy living near there. I dont live that far away - well about an hour and a half. Last year it was a mud bath - literally paddling - stall-holders had to build mud dams as it flowed downhill. Had a great time though - didn't mind plodging! Just great to see lots of small bands in small venues - even the main stage area is small. Yes I've seen van Morrison too many years ago.
Haven't been to Womad - lots of people talk about it though - I missed out on lots of good festivals but hoping to make up for it in my old age...!!

I've been to quite a few over the years, not all pop - mostly here in London but saw Sting, Gloria Estefan and U2 ( don't like them except for my theme song "still haven't found what I'm looking for!) in Cape Town as well as local musicians like Louis Mhlanga and Vusi Mahlasela.

Van Morrison (he was in a bad mood), Keith Jarrett in San Sebastián, near where we used to live (ipad did that accent, not me!)

London: Oscar Peterson
Alison Krauss and Union Station
Ali Farka Toure
David Gray
Prince (top deck of the O2 so couldn't see or hear)
Bob Dylan ( cheaper seats at wembley arena so as Prince  >:()
Jan Gabarek & the Hilliard Ensemble in St Paul's Cathedral

Walked out of some Canadian wailer at the Barbican, along with many others. Have forgotten her name, if not her out of tune voice!
Going to see the Boss in June

Would really love to have gone to see REM and would paddle a canoe across the Atlantic to see JJ Cale.
I mostly go to concerts I can get to, so north or west London don't feature and they often get the best concerts.
Years ago when young and healthy I went to Womad, when it was in Bracknell. I've never forgotten Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. I went into a sort of trance, which embarrassed OH so he jabbed me in the ribs to snap me out of it!!

;D Just watching a programme about bands from 1971 on BBC4 - some of those you have all mentioned on here. Family,- sounds like he has a bad case of laryngitis, Humble pie, Badfinger, Stone the Crows, Babe Ruth and Rod Sterwart with the faces and a very young looking Ronnie Wood, They all had that same haircut, which was popular at the time.

Think Van Morrison is well known for his moods. He did a show here a few years ago in the grounds of a castle. He stomped on, sang, no audience interaction, then stomped off again.   Hubby saw him as he was policing the event. Said he was very ill tempered.

Yes, he was like that in Spain when we went. I was so irritated with him. I'd not go again.

I'd also love to see Led Zeppelin. I love what they did when they played the O2 (not that I got a ticket), where no ticket agencies or touts got their hands on any tickets.

We went to see Van Morrison at Glasgow SECC , he mostly stood with his back to the audience , quite rude I thought , wouldnt pay to see him again ,
Saw Westlife , The Eagles , Paul McCartney , Dusty Springfield (years ago ) , Hermans Hermits (again yrs ago ) , they were all very good .

I'm more into Country is that OK.

Went to see Dolly Parton, excellent. ;D ;D

Willy Nelson, absolute rubbish, people were walking out in middle.

And Glen Campbell's farewell tour, he has altzhimers . Sorry can't spell it. It was great too. He had 3 of his kids in the band, and got a standing ovation when he completley forgot words and started again.

I would have loved to seen John Denver when he came to Aberdeen, but I couldn't afford the tickets. No chance now  :'( :'(

We seldom get the really big names in Aberdeen these days despite having exhibition centre.  Venue isn't big enough apparently. Have to travel to Glasgow SECC to see really big names which makes it a tad expensive. Concert tickets, plus travel, plus overnight stay. Only two concerts we did that for were REM and Coldplay.

Thank you Rowan.

I have a John Denver playlist on my phone and i listen to it when I'm working ;D ;D

I know CB its a shame isn't it. We were lucky enough to be invited by friend to SERC to see Dolly.
Dread to think what it cost.

Glen Campbell was in the Music Hall.

Apparently the Glastonbury Team have been fined due to human waste being allowed to seep into the local water course in 2014.   :-[.  It would seem that no one contacted the Environment Agency when it was noted during the Festival that the acceptable discharge rates from the site had risen above what was expected.  Many fish including protected UK Species died  :'(

It was a shame but an accident. The tank sprung/sprang a leak. 42 fish died https://www.theguardian.com/music/2016/may/24/glastonbury-festival-fined-over-sewage-leak

The Judge didn't think so Taz, to the sum of several £ths.  There is absolutely NO excuse, the tanks should have been double bunded and although the Enviroment Agency had done their Risk Assesment and passed the tanks …….. the buck stops with the organisers.

Personally, the tanks should not have been so close to a water course anyway  >:(

The judge seems more amused I think

"The district judge Simon Cooper said the Somerset festival could have contacted the authorities more quickly following the problem in June 2014, but said it had largely dealt with it well.

He expressed amusement at the level of detail he had heard over how the festival handled the situation.

Bristol magistrates court heard that sewage found its way into Whitelake river, harming water quality and leading to the death of 42 fish including brown trout.

Glastonbury Festivals Ltd admitted a single charge of breaching environmental regulations. The judge fined the festival £12,000 and ordered it to pay £19,000 towards prosecution costs.

He found that Glastonbury had “low culpability” for the incident and praised its response and systems. He said: “I am still slightly amused that it has been necessary to go to this level of detail.

“I am satisfied that there was proper planning for the festival and no criticism is made of that. There was a waste management plan, there was a rivers and streams management plan. I am impressed by how responsive Glastonbury Festivals Ltd have been.

“I am bemused at the vigour and energy that has been put into this detailed analysis of what happened, much after the event. I am sure lessons will be learned. I shall say no more about it, save to say that cooperation is clearly essential and I hope that this hearing has done nothing to affect that"

My first concert on my own was Tubeway Army/Gary Numan in 1979 I think - my grandad's delivery driver worked as a bouncer at City Hall in Newcastle and got me in on front row. I was 13 and amazed. Saw him on his 50th birthday in Manchester few years back when he toured Replicas. Great gig.

In recent years I've been to lots of outdoor concerts and I've seen The Proclaimers and that was a wonderful hot night in a woodland setting, Tom Jones who I was never a fan of but he was superb in a lakeside setting and Status Quo in the grounds of a stately home in August and it was absolutely freezing cold but a great night.

Well of course people talk at festivals CLKD!!! Why would that stop you going - the bands are in big fields with PA so the music is much louder than the talking?  I love them (fields ones and room ones!) and would go to more of them if my husband would - we do Glastonbury as volunteers and usually one other (site based one that is - and perhaps I go off to the odd arts festival to see daughter. I wouldn't go on my own because I wouldn't want to do all the van stuff and put up the awning etc on my own, although would happily see the bands on my own.

No Hurdity - the music was NOT louder than the talking  :bang: :bang: :bang: which is why we stopped paying huge amounts of money to hear people talking.  I paid to hear the music and see the performers.

Which festival was it? Must admit I've never been at a festival where the talkers have drowned out the sound but, then again, I am usually down the front  ;D

Cropredy, 1990 and 1991.  It became unbearable - we would sit on the edge of the field and find people all around us, it was obvious from conversations that they were continuing where they had left off  >:(.  I threatened to make a sign saying "I've paid to hear the music not your Life Story" but Himself wouldn't paint if for me …...

You can get t-shirts saying that sort of thing nowadays but usually for room gigs. I've never seen one at a festival I must admit. It's probably because you were on the edge of the field I think. Not that this excuses it but I must admit to sitting on the edges when it's a band that I'm not too keen on to have a natter rather than watch the band. Festivals are a great place to meet up with friends not seen in a while so it does get difficult, sometimes, to remember that the music is the prime reason for being there. I think festivals are a mix of listening, dancing, drinking and having fun - it's hard to do that quietly sometimes. Are you on here anywhere https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PgYL-KNdMmQ   :D

;D Now that list contains music from bands that used to echo down the stairs from various sons over the years all of which were into heavy metal at some point - but seem to be less so now. Of that list I've only seen Metallica ( at Glastonbury a couple of years ago - brilliant!), and must have seen Dave Gilmour as saw Pink Floyd at Knebworth festival in 1975!!!

Can't remember all the bands I've seen over the years and while bringing up four children hardly went to any. Also went to lots of folk clubs back in the day so saw acts that people won't have heard of!!!

Going to End of the Road festival in a couple of weeks - a very small festival with mainly not mainstream bands so looking forward to that :)

PS also might have posted on this thread already - can't remember !!!

Gary Moore
Quite an eclectic mix there haha

Hi there Tempest!  :)

A fellow lover of good music here  ;) !  ;)

Am loving your list! Seen a lot of them myself.  :)

Would love to see Scorpions, not seen those yet, always seem to miss their tours!  ;D

We used to live within striking distance of the Midlands so managed to see a lot of good rock and metal bands but have recently moved to Scotland and the pickings are fewer up here! (although we did see Thunder, Magnum, and the Whitesnake Def Leppard gigs earlier this year)

So anyway, hello!  :)

I love going to gigs but most have been in the last ten years. In no particular order, I've seen:

Simple Minds (3 times)
Texas (twice)
Manic Street Preachers (5 times)
Take That (twice)
Jason Donovan
Keane
Wednesday 13 (twice)
Paul McCartney
Kaiser Chiefs (4 times)
Duran Duran (twice)
The Fratellis (twice)
My Chemical Romance
Kasabian (3 times)
Arctic Monkeys
Oasis
Airbourne (twice)
Heaven's Basement (3 times)
Olivia Newton John
Muse
Elton John
Girls Aloud
Ugly Kid Joe
Skid Row
Kylie Minogue
Level 42
Human League
Bryan Adams
Royal Blood
Frankie Valli
Brotherhood of Man  :D

Currently enjoying seeing tribute bands - great night out for a fraction of the price.
I've seen Bjorn Again loads and if there was one gig I'd go to regardless of the price, it would be to see ABBA.

I was told recently when visiting a National Trust properly to leave any backpacks in the car. I was ok with a handbag it would seem.

I suspect more to stop people stealing the silver than the fact we were carrying anything dangerous.

I've been to see, David Bowie, at the NEC. Just fabulous, grew up listening to him from my brothers.
They even had his hair cut at one point, lol will never forget that....I actually went with one of my brothers, my OH, bought us the tickets..

Also been to see, Simply Red = twice.  That was really good. Had a great time.
Saw,  Stylistics,

          The real thing
          Oddessey
           George Macrea
           Shalama
           Four Tops
           Boney M

The ones I would really like to see are The Ojays.

I'd like to see, Elton John,

                     Queen
                      Neil Diamond
Nickleback, think I'd be the oldest swinger in town for that one...lol
                    & maroon 5,

The list goes on, & on,.....what I don't like is all this rap stuff that's around now, I'm not saying it's not creative, or interesting, it's just not for me....bring back glam rock , love it...lol the kids today wouldn't know what's hit em......lol
