Title: TMJ - I've Found a Fantastic Book (inexpensive) for TMJ - by Physical Therapist
Post by: Trey on December 01, 2011, 04:22:07 PM
Please PM me if you want info - it's on Amazon.

I've learned that the TMJ (temporal mandibular joint) is 1/16th from the brain, causes vertigo, blurred vision, migraine-some types, and so many things, oh choking, hoarseness, neck and shoulder pain.

Much is caused by head forward posture (ears not centered over shoulders if looking at the patient from the side).

Anyhow, I've had incredible improvement with easy to do things such as where the tongue is supposed to be placed in mouth when not eating.

I'm soooooo mad at my dentists - so many out there haven't a clue - they do crowns, re-alignment and on and on and the bottom line is teeth are not supposed to touch (except when chewing in the back molars) so all that changing of bite is a rip off for TMJ, that is.

Much is caused by head forward posture (ears not centered over shoulders if looking at the patient from the side) This is exactly what I was told by a physio who specialised in musicians' pain problems. She gave me exercises to help correct it.

Spooky you should mention the placement of the tongue as a dentist told me a couple of days ago that I've got "atypical tongue placement".  Apparently my tongue doesn't do what it should do when at rest.  Made me feel like a freak - but he was very reassuring when he saw how shocked I was.  I'm so aware of it now I keep trying to put it somewhere else rather than let it do what it wants.  Just what I need right now!  Apparently it pushes against my bottom teeth instead of just sitting there.  I can't say it's ever been a problem so I know I should just ignore his comments.  Very strange.

Jenny, let me answer you publicly (did pm and left this out because hadn't read the posts).  Your tongue should rest (the first third of it) against the little ridge just in front of your front teeth and against the roof of your mouth.  Your lips should be closed (creates a 'suction' effect that keeps your tongue (the first 1/3rd) against the roof of your mouth - easier than it sounds, but I have to break habit of tongue just like yours, I fear.  And your teeth should never touch, unless chewing, and then only the back molars.

Off to pm now.  Wish I knew if I could put title here - it is so, so worthwhile.

I have read some of these posts before I actually properly read the title - my mind was doing overtime!

Trey - I think that because the book is on Amazon then it is ok to post a link?

I have a wierd jaw and teeth arrangement. My teeth sit touching together when my mouth is closed, I think I look like Bruce Forsyth  ;) My teeth slope inwards and there's not enough room to lay my tongue flat so it sits slightly raised and pushed up against my bottom front teeth.

I did go to see a maxillofacial specialist once because both my dentist and I thought it could be the cause of my headaches. He said if I'd been younger they would have broken and reset my jaw but he made me a bite riser to wear at night in case I was clenching my teeth. It didn't really help but he hadn't suggested making any further appointments and I didn't follow it up.

Stuck with this jaw forever now - wish I'd done something about it when I was younger.

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_2_4?url=search-alias%3Dstripbooks&field-keywords=tmj+healing+plan&sprefix=TMJ+

You guys - put 1/3 of the tongue - the front third of course on the roof of your mouth with the tip against a little ridge just in front of your front teeth on the roof- the book describes this much better than I.  Keep your lips closed (relaxed) and this creates a suction to keep your lovely tongue on the lovely roof of your mouth.  In two days it became natural to me (when I think of it - I mean, I regress).

The tmj joint is right next to the trigeminal nerve  - a real nasty nerve if it gets irritated - one branch affects eyes, one upper jaw/ear and other well I don't really know - but the tmj (joint) is 1/16th of an inch from your brain.

This blasted affliction affects hearing, balance, tinnitus, blurry vision, swallowing, hoarseness, neck pain, shoulder pain and on and on.

I kid you not - knowledge is power and when you read her book it all starts to make sense and I want to go out and @!#$%^&* my dentists who have messed up my mouth and they are all so stupid.

Her endorsements are from top, top people.

All I know is her suggestions have already made a huge difference for me.  I am now a wonderful person.

After getting very "aware" of my tongue when reading this yesterday ( as others said) I just read your last post, Trey, thinking about whether you'd posted the link and so "forgetting" my tongue. I was able to check without altering anything and yay - that's how mine feels.  :)
I will check out the book though as I have neck and shoulder issues and do get referred pain in the flesh of my ear sometimes.

Hi Ladies
About 10 years ago i started experiencing extreme pain on the left side of my face ,after several visits to the doctors who kept telling me there was nothing wrong with me and feeling like a hypochondriac i went to visit the dentist and before i had even spoke, which was painful to do :'(   he told me i had TMJ, fitted me with a mouth guard to stop me grinding my teeth in my sleep and hey presto pain free , But two weeks ago i  had a wisdom tooth removed and have developed a dry socket and no kidding the pain had been horrendous ,similar to TMJ which is why i went back to the dentist to see if he had knocked my jaw out of line whilst removing the tooth. Researching dry socket it was mentioned that ladies on the pill could develop this and i was wondering if HRT would have the same effect? as i didnt develop this when i had last wisdom tooth out pre HRT , Thanks for letting me moan on and look forward to your replies. Tina :thankyou:

I'm sorry - I pm ed some with the title and author.  It is the TMJ Healing Plan by Cynthia Petersen PT.

Another symptom I hate is when my scalp feels tight and I can almost feel the roots of my hair.  Ear ache is another and that crackling sound and stuffed feeling.  I don't have any of that after one week.

I am such a cynic that, for me, this book has just been so helpful and made me more positive.

Thank you Trey,
I also suffer with TMJ. The scalp feeling, earache, head, neck/shoulder ache and ringing in my ears are all things I suffer with. I have wear & tear in my jaw also. My son & daughter also suffer with TMJ. Both my son and I sleep with a night guard. Will try the tongue thing.

Hi Tina, I've also suffered from a dry socket.    Awful, awful pain!

I found a copy of this on Amazon for a very reasonable price so thanks, Trey.  Your advice about where to put my tongue (!) is so clear - thanks.  I Googled it and couldn't really understand what they were telling me to do.  Since the dentist mentioned my tongue to me I'm obsessed with it too, had no idea I did anything differently to other people.  I find it tends to sit in all sorts of different parts of my mouth so how could he sum up what it did in one examination?  Very strange.  Anyway, I'm trying to get into the habit of putting it exactly where you describe so hope to unlearn any bad habits.

As usual you lovely ladies on this forum are the font of all knowledge.

I wondered how he could see the 'correct' position with your lips closed like they are supposed to be.  I guess if it were really 'weird' positioning than maybe.  Hmm, hard to visualize.

The dentist was examining my teeth and said he noticed it then.  The thing is my mouth was wide open and I was struggling against my natural reflex to swallow, we all know what that feels like.  The more I think about it the more confused I get.

I just read her chapter on breathing correctly and how incorrect breathing is thought to lead to migraine, neck and shoulder issues, but the most interesting - irritated nerve endings due to the carbon dioxide/oxygen ratio in the blood.  Fibro??

She makes such good sense and her methods work immediately - for me, anyhow.

Jazza, I'm still so excited - my tinnitus of 10 years or more is becoming less loud - ahhhhhhhhh, there's hope.  How can something so simple be so effective.  Also, helping my OH with occasional swallowing/choking problems and me with large pills.

Who knew? ::)

PS: Jazza, any adjustments to posture regarding neck should be extremely gentle.  A super PT told me the saying is re: the neck, "if you can feel it, it is too much".  As CLKD would say, Baby Steps.

Hi Trey,
Well i best mention again i have Fibro too and from the minute i read your post and went on Amazon and read inside the book you mentions (have bought the book now) i have been aware of how i am holding my face/mouth/tongue etc.
I spent most of last night and afternoon attempting to keep my tongue in the correct place and was doing some very very gentle exercises and have to say the nerve pain eased a little. I also know my posture isn't right at all and have spent time trying to keep my head up more.

I also can be sat in the chair when all of a sudden  my mouth just clamped on its own and i almost break my teeth.
I used to wear a mouth guard at night but it made me gagg so stopped it.

Will keep following this thread as i am going to stick with this and thank you once again.
Take care J x :) :) :) :)

Hi Jazza
Have you considered trying Alexander Technique to help with your posture? The lessons can be a little expensive but once you've learnt how to do it, you just apply it yourself. I can't recommend it enough.  :)

I'm getting further into the book and continue to be amazed at the connections with tmj, fibro and such. Probably the best purchase I've even made.  At good PT is wonderful.  A bad one is awful.
She refers to Janet Travell - I've had her books for probably 20+ years and they have helped me avoid a wheel chair and live a fairly normal life given some congenital issues.  So her sources are the best.  She says Travell's two volumes are called the 'Red Bibles' and I can see why.  So much good info.  Travell's now cost about $500.00 USD so $11 or 12 seems wonderful.

It's so nice to know we can improve even at this age.

I used to suffer from appauling neck and shoulder pain, solved after starting yoga.  My friend (still not had her confirmation email after a few days) has had jaw problems for many years and the DH has the jaw clicking thing and neck and shoulder probs.  Added to wish list due to my recent financial cock up - again.

Oh yes, I have an anterior open bite and I have all of your listed things sparky. If I just my lower jaw forward my tinnitus and buzzing stop for a moment.   Unless I get my jaw aligned things will not improve but I don't have about £4,000 for orthodontic treatment so my chiropractor does his best and the rest makes me depressed.

This is from the British Tinnitus association and is about the relationship between TMJ and Tinnitus

mine too especially if I have something chewy to eat or I put too much food in my mouth at one time.   I am sure my recent salivary gland stone was also connected due to my tendency not to chew too much, which means not so much saliva is being produced.
I have recently started chewing a small piece of gum for 10 minutes once a day to stimulate saliva production and I have noticed less dry mouth since doing this  :).

I have tinnitus but mine has been caused by recurrent ear infections. I'm now slightly deaf in that ear. I also have jaw pain but I'm aware of clenching especially when I'm stressed. I often waken up with a stiff jaw but my dentist says there is no evidence of tooth grinding.

When I have a sore jaw I rub on a little ibuprofen gel night and morning and it helps as does a hot bag.
