Constant rectal pressure
« on: December 01, 2025, 08:04:22 PM »

I finished a 7 day course of antibiotics for diverticulitis a few weeks ago. I was then constipated so  gp prescribed laxido sachets. I took 5 sachets over 3 days then stopped as it was giving me stomach ache. Ever since then I've had nonstop rectal pressure and constant urge to have a bowel movement even if there's nothing to come out. I think the condition is called tenesmus. There is no pain just awful discomfort from the pressure and feeling of needing to 'go'. I'm now on day 5 of this sensation and can't focus on anything else. Can anyone relate please?

Yep.  Very often after I 'go' there is a feeling behind my coccyx that I need to go again  >:( OK if I'm home but not when out and about, i.e. shopping  >:( >:(

What's your diet been like in recent days?  MayB drinking a probiotic or eating/drinking kifer will ease the slow transit.  How is the wind?

I have suffered slow transit for many years, very occasionally I feel like I have emptied completely.  I know where every loo is in every town that we visit is, on an in case basis.

What's the cause of the diverticulitis?  Tenesmus is when we feel the need to 'go', can't, get up, walk around then go back with some success.  Very annoying!

What R your periods up 2?

Thanks for reply. I'm 56, postmeno for 4 years. Not had scan for diverticulitis, doctor made a judgment call. I assume it's age and diet related. Since being told about diverticulitis I've had a low fiber soft diet to let the colon heal. This tenesmus seems to have been triggered by either antibiotics or laxido. Been awake all night with it. No pain or blood or discharge, just the nonstop sensation of needing to 'go' which isn't relieved by a bowel movement. Going to try and see doctor today, maybe see if it's internal haemorrhoids or something requiring further investigation.

When I had a loose stomach that wouldn't stop, I fasted for 24 hours.  Tough but it did the trick.

I'm sure diverticulitis has to be confirmed by scan or colonoscopy. I would ask for some further tests if I were you, ask for a FIT test. Blood isn't always visible

Stop the laxido, your poor bowel doesn't know whether it's flying a bike or riding a kite !!! It's a laxative so if the digestive tract is clean throughout the sensation of needing to 'go' will continue.

It would be better to take a LIVE yoghurt after a course of ABs to replace the bacteria in the gut.  Greek is very good for this.

I have slow transit with a feeling of 'need' constantly.  Changing your diet slowly may help, in the last 5 years I've had to alter mine completely in order to accommodate age-related changes.

Well I saw the doctor today, he did a rectal exam. He's pretty sure I'm backed up with constipation but further up so has advised me to go back on laxido and take 4-5 sachets a day until my system is cleared out. Here's hoping!

Was there Poo on the examination finger?

Do U have plenty of reading material in the bathroom?  I usually do crosswords  ;) also you may be sore if the laxative works fast, I have nivea close by. A warm bath will also help.  When do U have to report back to the GP?

He said he could feel poo which he was expecting to be hard but it was soft which made him think the bulk of it was further up (which it feels like to me). The laxido doesn't have an immediate effect, takes a couple of days. Had 4 sachets today, going to try a 5th later and hope for the best over next couple of days. He didn't suggest another appointment unless the rectal pressure doesn't resolve when I'm (hopefully) cleared out.

Hopefully U won't feel dizzy and lightheaded after  :o

MayB gentle massage of your belly too will help but I can't remember which way.  When I had IBS we could C the wind bubble moving down towards and below the belly button as I  lay in the bath ....... it was like having a monster in there  ;D
