Return of symptoms
« on: October 03, 2025, 02:08:15 PM »

I haven’t posted for a while because I’ve been fairly settled on HRT, but I have recently had a return of my worst symptom of the perimenopause-anxiety with the odd panic attack thrown in just for fun.
I have a mirena coil and use a 75 patch and 1 pump of oestrogel. I’m 55 and had assumed I was post menopause or close to it.
Just spoke to a youngish GP over the phone, who told me there wasn’t much point checking my hormone levels as I am on such a MASSIVE dose that they won’t show whether I’m post menopausal as ‘we’re currently pretending I’m not’ with the ‘large’ amount of estrogen I’m taking. I said that I’m not convinced I absorb very well and so she agreed to check.
I would really appreciate the excellent advice that is given here-is it worth me slightly tweaking the HRT maybe to a 100 patch if my levels aren’t very high (which I suspect they won’t be) and dropping the pump of gel? And any other advice please 🙏
Also, I currently have an awful cold that won’t seem to go away-does anyone have any experience of this affecting menopause symptoms?

Peri are the years [10+in some cases] when we begin to notice changes.

The last monthly bleed ever is menopause proper. Thought Mother Nature can throw in the Curved ball  ::).  On an HRT regime it would be difficult to know how far along the journey you might B and although some do stop treatments to find out, they often develop new/old symptoms.

Sometimes the amount of oestrogen needs a hike as the ovaries may still pump out more/less hormone - who is overseeing your regime?

Blood tests are reliably un-reliable particularly for those on HRT.  I would suggest that a hike would be in order hopefully some1 with knowledge of your regime will be along to advise.

Have U done a Covid-19 test as there's a 'lot of it about'.  Again  >:(.  Sometimes colds can run into each other, depending on which virus has been caught.

Stress can affect symptoms.  And I would consider a virus to be stressful.

Thanks for replying-I thought the blood test might be useful to gauge how well I’m absorbing from the patch, but I couldn’t get an appointment for that for a few more weeks so I will have to wait and then speak to the nurse practitioner who is really helpful.
I really couldn’t contemplate stopping HRT at the moment-I can’t go back to the way I was, waking up with dread every morning with my legs shaking.
My Covid test was negative and I am hoping this is just a blip caused by the stress of a virus as you say 🤞🏻

It's normal for your own production to drop as you approach meno and afterwards as the overies continue to produce a bit for some years before they die completely, so the return of symptoms isn't unexpected. The nhs guidelines are that 100mcg is the maximum so unless you have an enlightened gp you may have to go private and fund an increase yourself. They also think 250-300 is sufficient whilst private prescribers usually think 400 and up to 1000 is OK as some women need more than 400 to feel well. Unless you absorb the products differently which you might well do 1 pump gel is equivalent to a 25mcg patch anyway

Thank you-my GP surgery definitely won’t let me go higher than 100mcg. I will see what happens over the next few weeks in the hope things will settle down again. You are all amazing 🤩
