Insomnia on micronised progesterone?
« on: August 27, 2025, 12:35:40 PM »

Hi
I'm on 100 patch and one a night progesterone.
If it keeps me wired is it best to take in the morning? Anyone tried this regime. I know I could take it vaginally off licence. If I do, how do I know it's working. Thanks

I don't really have any advice I'm afraid but I would also like to know this answer as it effects me in the same way.
Feel like I am on flight or fight mode all night when I used Utrogestan.
I use it vaginally though (before bed, haven't tried during the day) I couldn't tolerate the side effects taking it orally.
I was having hot flushes and night sweats when I tried it orally in the beginning

I’m progesterone intolerant, so I’ve been trying alternatives. Before, when I was still using progesterone, it helped to take it earlier in the day. I picked 3 pm, since that was between food (some say side effects are less if you take at least 2 hours after and 1 hour before food). In the beginning I got drowsy from progesterone, so 3 pm was after I’ve picked up my daughter from school and didn’t have to drive for multiple hours after.

I had no problem falling asleep btw, but kept waking up when I took progesterone at night and would be so tired in the morning.

I had the same issue when I started. Switching to taking progesterone in the morning made a big difference for me, I didn’t feel as restless at night anymore. Everyone reacts differently though, so it might be worth trying for a week and seeing how you feel

Thank you all for your replies.  Much appreciated.  I took it vaginally last night and didnt get the wired symptons but I know the gp may be against me doing this.  You have kindly given me a couple of options to think about.  I wonder why the sleepy drug makes some people wired, and others sedated.  Rather odd!

Either option is fine.

Your GP doesn't have a camera in your bedroom - if they do you've got bigger problems.

Regarding how do you know if the progesterone is working, this is the same as how you know if taking it orally - by the absence of endometrial cancer.

Utro gives me insomnia too and makes me dopey all day. Taking it at 10am was best for me but still far from perfect. You could try a sequi regime to give you more time off it or you could try a different progestogen. Norethisterone and a mirena don't have these side effects for me.

Hey bluebird68

How did you get on with the progesterone? My GP thinks Im intolerant too and has referred me to a meno clinic. Also insomnia and increased anxiety. I was fine for 8 weeks after starting aside from insomnia which hit straight away then bam. Im curious to know if you found an answer.

It made me horribly wired too, with dreadful palpitations & waaaay too hot at night, making pre-existing insomnia much worse.  Progesterone increases body temperature & for some that can worsen vasomotor symptoms & seriously mess with sleep.

I respond to micronised progesterone in a similar way. I found that taking it first thing in the morning helped.

I would just like to point out that there are multiple other progestin options and also tibolone, so for anyone feeling wretched on micronised progesterone this is not your only option.

Social media has people thinking that synthetic progestins are the devil but in truth the difference in real world health outcomes is absolutely marginal and there is no point putting up with side effects that aren't going away when there are perfectly good, safe and easily accessible alternatives.
