Utrogestan and painful jaw
« on: May 11, 2024, 08:56:00 PM »

I've seen an old post on this but am struggling to find much information at all about Utrogestan and jaw pain - is it quite a common side effect? The Utrogestan has been a game changer in improving my sleep but the trade-off seems to have been a very painful jaw, I guess I must be clenching it in my sleep.  :(  Are there any alternatives? (other than a Mirena coil). Thanks!

Hi HRicardo

 :welcomemm:

Never heard of that one! Very doubtful that Utrogestan can cause this but with some women including me, it gives rise to very vivid dreams which disturb sleep ( along with increased bladder frequency) so maybe something like this is causing you to clench your jaw.

Do tell us a bit more about yourself, where you are in menopause, how old you are, what your HRT regime is etc.

Yes Mirena coil is very effective in protecting the endometrium when taking oestrogen as part of HRT and depdning on your age is a contraceptive too, though I doubt it has the same sedative effects as progesterone, which is one if its properties (like pregnancy fatigue).

I have just gone onto these 2 things and am having very bad jaw pain. I think I want to go back to my lower dose patches.

Do you take an antidepressant at all? I have bruxism caused by the ssri i take. There's not much you can do about it except wear a night guard to protect your teeth from damage. Can't say I ever noticed teeth clenching when on utrogestan though and it doesn't come up as a side effect.

Penguin!

What does the bruxism feel like??? My teeth have been very sore and sensitive since upping AD. I'm not aware of clenching or grinding. But the sensitivity is immense. And my teeth can throb all day.

Bruxism is a condition where a person grinds, clenches, or gnashes their teeth, often without realizing it. It can occur during the day or while sleeping, but is more common at night.

I can't find any reference to this being caused by SSRIs ....... [yet]

It's a known side effect with srri meds unfortunately. I wake up with really aching top teeth / jaw and a crinkling / rustling sound in my ears when I open my mouth really wide (to yawn for example). I do notice myself clenching the day and I stop myself and consciously relax, but at night it must happen in my sleep. Apparently it can make your teeth really sensitive too. I was reading that clenching can be at the strength of 250 lbs pressure which is huge! I am seeing my psychiatrist tomorrow so will ask him. I took half a diazepam on Friday as a test and it relaxed my whole face and didn't happen that night, but obvs I can't do that on a regular basis. However it did show that the issue is muscular tightening and the diazepam worked by relaxing the muscles as online research had indicated it would. I am not sure what to do as the fluoxetine is so beneficial for me and I don't want to go back to how I was before with the anxiety and ocd, you know what a long road that has been for me. I do have a night guard from the dentist which I've never used so will try that but I think all that does is protect the teeth from damage rather than stop the clenching. I dont grind tho, or at least I don't think I do!

There are lots of examples online

tnx for that Penguin - is it snowing where you R ;-).  DH has been busy researching 'tannins'  ::)

Anxiety/tension/stress can cause teeth grinding.  If U can tolerate it then stick with the ADs.  I don't think I would consider a mouth guard at night  :o and wonder how those sports people use them other than 4 safety.  [MotoGP riders for example]

Not yet, it is raining though

The mouth guard isn't like the ones sports players wear, it is small and fits neatly over the top teeth. I have yet to try sleeping in it though, I didn't start using it at the time as I was getting silent reflux and didn't want to make it worse. I might try wearing around the house today and see if it makes any difference. I really don't notice clenching at night but I must do.

Thanks penguin.

So frustrating. So typical - I've never experienced this before on escit.

Yes. I agree. I think mouth guard does stop the grinding impact, not the clenching itself.

So, is this new to you on Fluxetine? You never had it before on citalopram?

I have read a couple of options. NHS suggest buspirone. I'm not really sure what it is, but it's for anxiety. And seems you can add if in with ssri. Perhaps ask your phsyc.

Also Botox relaxes thx jaw muscles - apparently.

Did ir start immediately for you? Or after a few weeks/months? .

Apologies SD25. Although it could be the same thing you are suffering from. X

And I defo don't notice clenching at night as I sleep with my mouth open!!!!

But I would say my jaw feels like it has tension in it all day.

I did have it mildly on citalopram,  it was why I got the mouth guard but it was very very minor (i was on a very lose dose) and I didn't make the link then. It is a lot more noticeable on fluoxetine and seems to have worsened recently despite me being on the higher dose for months, or rather the effect has worsened. I didn't see it as that much of an issue until I noticed that my top teeth (which I had braces on as a teenager because they stuck out) seemed to be moving forward again. Upon researching that I found that bruxism can lead to an overbite, especially in someone who had had one previously. I do notice that when my jaw is relaxed, my bottom jaw and both lower and upper front teeth sit more comfortably together. Tensing seems to push my lower jaw back and jut my upper jaw forward. So that is how I became aware of how bad the clenching was. I may end up needing braces again which is distressing!

Funny side story is that i stopped using my braces before I was supposed to (so didnt complete thw course of treatment), as I was 15 when I took them out to kiss my boyfriend, lost them and was too embarrassed to tell my mum 🤣
