I had a very large book about horse breeds, some I had never been aware of.  I gave it to DH's cousin who shows Section B Welsh Cobs.  Some in the book were stunning.  Morgans are at the top 4 me ;-)

That's the 1, I remember it in the book.  Wonder what the temperament is like.

I'd like a Spanish Norman, cross between andalusian and percheron. I bought a couple of andalusian youngsters from a stud that was closing down and she showed me photos of the ones she'd bred. It seems like a good cross with a bit more substance than an andalusian. Sadly not many breeding andalusians in the UK and even fewer percherons.

These breeds show themselves off with arrogance.  Percherons were part of the destirllie [sp] the fighting horses in Meadieval times.

Tournament Stud were going to breed one ....... off 2 find the correct spelling.

Here we R : The most common medieval war horse breeds were the Friesian, Andalusian, Arabian, and Percheron. These horse breeds we're a mixture of heavy breeds ideal for carrying armored knights, and lighter breeds for hit and run or fasting moving warfare.

A collective name for all medieval warhorses was a charger. Within this category, we can distinguish destriers and coursers.

Destriers were generally taller and resembled modern draft horses. They had to be able to carry a fully armored knight, as well as their own armor. Destriers were most often stallions due to their natural aggression and tendency to fight in the heat of battle. However, the preference varied between nations.

Coursers were shorter, lighter, and swifter horses ridden unarmored during sieges and raids. They represented a highly mobile unit that was often preferred to heavy cavalry.

Although war horse breeds weren't as distinct in the Middle Ages as they are today, many modern breeds can be traced back to destriers and coursers

Any1 been to Vienna to see the Spanish Riding School - sometimes the Lippezaners are travelled here for displays.  "The White Stallions" I think was the name of the film about how this breed - foals born black - were taken to Chezolovakia I think for safety in WWII.  That would be a trip: to visit all the European horse studs  ;D - I'll fire up the charabanc?

A few years ago we went to a Game Fair where a display team on Andulusians were performing.  The rain POURED but it didn't detour the performers, the girls were side-saddle  :o

When the girl who won Bake Off - can't remember her name - went on a holiday  :D 2 the US, she met an all girl side-saddle performing riders ..........

You're right there jaypo. I had a Weltmeyer x May Sherif mare. Slightly dodgy temperament but boy could she move. Velcro jods required.
Spanish riding school - another item on my bucket list (I have a long list ;)). The only time I was in Vienna they were closed.

Away on their hols probably?  stallions out with the mares or perhaps travelling Europe with displays ?

Anyone remember the film in the 1960s about the Lippezaners being rescued?   (1963)

End months of WWII: The mares had been moved earlier but history dictates:  During a break in the action, Colonel Reed began to organize transport to get the horses out of Hostau to U.S. lines. Many of the stallions were ridden out by American, German and Cossack officers, while some of the mares were driven on the hoof like some Wild West-style roundup. The others with their foals were loaded onto hastily converted German and American trucks and sent west.

The group made good its escape without a moment to spare; Soviet T-34 tanks arrived on the eastern edge of Hostau just as the Lipizzaners and Stewart’s Foreign Legion rolled out of town. A tense stand-off followed, but the Red Army decided not to risk a clash with Reed’s forces and Operation Cowboy was successfully completed with not a moment to lose.

They close for a time in summer, I think it's to give the horses a break rather than because they're touring. Yes, I saw that film, so lucky they weren't lost.
