How/when to take utrogestan
« on: October 28, 2017, 11:24:43 AM »

Hello I've just got a question yet again sorry..I'm due to start on oestrogel utrogestan regime this week coming whenever my period decides to arrive.  I know there's a whole section on here but I couldn't find my answer.
I'm sadly having to start on the dreaded nhs rules so I'll be taking one pump of oestrogel daily and 200mg utrogestan orally days 15 to 26. My question is I'll be taking the oestrogel when I get up and utro last thing at night but is it empty stomach or  with food and how soon before bed. I don't go to sleep til 4am so I can't take befire my bedtime it'd be too late so what would people recommend.  ( I might not even make it to the utrogestan stage though as the oestrigen part of femoston sent me so low I wanted to end my life so came off it day 11 before I even got to progesterone stage) thank you

Hi peroxidebladder
I've just started on this regime
due to take my first utrogestan on Monday night. I've read a lot of ladies find it sedating so hopefully will have a good night's sleep.
I was on femseven and the only problem I had was they wouldn't stay on so doc prescribed me oestrogel 2 pumps

Thanks for your reply..I'm dreading starting afyer such a terrible time on femoston and I know the 200mg utrogestan for 12 days is not advised on here due to bad side effects but I'll try and if I need to reduce the dose I'll have to see a private menopause specialist.  Are you taking utro orally too?
Im mainly starting hrt for the inability to get to sleep before 4am every night it's been 4 years now and I'm at my wits end.  Fingers crossed it helps please let me know how you get on

Too tell you the truth im honestly thinking of going back on the femseven. I'm really struggling on the oestrogel anxiety wise and my mind is racing. I already have anxiety and depression so I'm not feeling very optimistic at the mo :-\ I've felt a dip for a few days now
I used to have sleep problems but mine was normally maintaining sleep, I was averaging 3-4 hours a night and about 5 hours with zoplicone.
I know one thing I really don't like this peri malarkey it's blooming exhausting ...

Sorry to hear about your anxiety worse that's what I was like on femoston but made me feel suicidal.  I'm the same I already take AD for depression but the panic  attacks started 4 years ago same time as my inability to sleep. You've got the common one in peri the waking up early which hrt really helps. I'm doubtful it'll help me at all. How did your other hrt work the one you said wouldn't stay on was it a oestrigen patch and what progesterone did you take with it. Did you find it helped with the drpression and anxiety and sleep?
I've only chosen the oestrogel as it seems the most popular hrt that works and is safest

I wish I had known about the anxiety side of peri 2 years ago things may of worked out differently for me but not one person or should I say health care professional even suggested it. I did tell them my periods where closer together and heavier but they said it was just my anxiety causing it and I took their word for it. I've had anxiety before but this just felt different and the mornings were hideous
I tried femseven sequi for a month and had no side effects but because of the sticking problems decided to change. I sleep better now but that's helped by all the other meds I take which were prescribed by a psychiatrist during that time when this all kicked off
So if your not getting to sleep till 4 how many hours are you getting ? After 4 years you must of tried everything under the sun . I really hope this regime works for you

No one ever said the sleep issue panic attacks anxiety disinterest in life totally could be peri just depression I really thought I was losing my mind. My periods are coming every 35 +days then last month a week early...Last gp was lovely but still only associates erratic periods with peri she doesn't believe any other issues are related.
I get zopiclone now but only enough for a sleep every 4 nights which gets me to sleep by 2am which is fantastic for me. Luckily this last year I've been able to start work later so I get up at 9am which allows 4 to 5 hours a night just isn't enough and seeing as I was always an early bird I feel lazy a failure and useless getting up so late. Sadly people who comment and judge don't realise I'm not asleep til 4am ish I live in an OAP area average age 90 so they're in bed for 730pm up at 6am so think I'm a lazy cow !!
You're right I have tried everuthing there's literally only hrt left and from the reading up and research it doesn't help hardly for delayed sleep disorder I have just for early onset waking like you. So I really hope afyer Monday you feel much better in the progesterone part..fingers and toes crossed xx ( can I ask how many zopiclone you are prescribed)

I don't get the zoplicone now but i had 7.5 took them every night for 4 weeks. I was also on 3.75 for odd nights here and there and now my pregablin and mirtazapine help me to nod off ok.
I'm off sick from work and have been since end of August. I have also just been diagnosed a type 2 diabetic so that hasn't been helping having blood sugars all over the place. I was working full time but I think I will struggle to go back to that so that is another concern.
I've decided to go back on the femseven and see if I can conquer this sticking problem with some transpore tape. I may attempt the oestrogel again in the future but when im feeling a bit stronger in myself. It did help stop a lot of the flushes I just struggled mentally . It's strange how it had that affect on me I thought estrogel was the feel good hormone

Sorry to hear about your job I lost my job 8 years ago when I had a breakdown then luckily we set up our own business but I'm not very useful as I'm permanently tired I'll or too depressed some days to do much. I tried mirtazapine at low dose but didn't help with getting to sleep and on the higher dose it helped slightly but I piled the weight on which as I have been in recovery from an eating disorder for almost 20 years I couldn't risk a relapse with such huge weight gain. A couple of pounds yeh not a stone in 4 weeks!! I was gutted as it did help a bit.
I'm surprised at oestrigel too I couldn't believe when I started femoston it's a good low dose hrt with friendly hormones but the oestrogen part like I said literally made me suicidal so hearing what you're like on oestrigel worries me and confirms my fears. Did your patch work well mood wise etc..I don't get hot flushes I get general overheating I can cope with all the nastiness of peri just not the anxiety low moods and insomnia x

I know I'm very surprised how the oestrogen made me feel unless the dose was too high, my mood was ok on the femseven but not significantly better but then again it may have needed more time. Like you I had to give up my previous job when I had my breakdown I was so unwell  keep saying if it had been last century I would of been locked up in the attic or in an asylum  :o
My weight has really increased from the mirtazapine which i hate I did try to come off it but I felt myself slipping backwards again so was advised to start taking it again. I'm hoping that once the hrt kicks in I can slowly start tapering it again. I know hrt is not a magic fix and all my issues won't disappear but it might make them a bit more manageable.
I'm so pleased I found this site cos since this peri started my world seems to have shrunk and my life is at a standstill.

Hello Nasil41
I never feel I'm in a position to offer much advice on this site  (still learning loads) but I DO know how to get Femseven Sequi to stick!
I used to put them on my lower abdomen below naval and swap sides weekly. My top sticking tip was to shower so my skin was warm, crack open the patch and carefully peel off one half. Do not touch the sticky side but put it straight on to your warm skin. Hold for a bit with your hand over the stuck side then unpeel and stick the other side. Hold again  covered by your hand then use a warm hairdryer on it for a minute or so. Sounds like a lot of faff but it's only once a week.
They stuck! Never lost one!
Hopefully this will work for you too  xx

Nasil...I had to laugh at your comment but you're right I'd have been a permanent resident at the asylum ..worryingly my maternal grandma went offor the rails during what we think would be menopsuse she stabbed my grandad thinking he was cheating she set fire to his clothes car and did very irrational things ending up with her being sectioned on and off for about 10 years I haven't spoken to my mum for years so can't ask further.  My mum sailed through her meno didn't know she'd even been through it til she realised she's not had a period fir a year..typically I'm following the path of my grandma which scares me. I read so many good stories of celebs too taking hrt to great success but my track record with meds is not good.  After all when I asked on here who had felt very low on the oestrogen part of hrt pit of the thousands of posts only 2 people had struggled. Me and you seem to have the shi**y end of the stick having bad sude effects on the supposed feel good hormone@@ typical eh.
Were you OK on both parts of the hrt on your patch no lower mood or negatives on the progesterone it's just if I get really down on the oestrogel I've got another option to try.

Thanks roadrunner for them tips I shall try it but I'm not sure about abdomen since I've put so much weight on I've developed a rather large overhang lol I think you call it an apron  :o at present i have it on the side of my thigh with transpore over the top.
Your poor grandma and your poor grandad having to go through that these blooming hormones have a lot to answer for. I went into hospital voluntarily 2 years ago as I was suicidal I never want to feel that desperate again. I feel like a freak now lol with the oestrogel making me worse instead of better, surely there must be more than just me and you ! We should do a poll on it we might be surprised.
I was fine on both of the patches, I was expecting the sky to fall in on phase 2 part but it didn't I just felt a bit bloated but I can live with that. I'm confused wether during peri you need a low or high dose of oestrogen due to having fluctuations and if it depends where abouts in peri you are ? I don't know about you but I'm getting a bit obsessed about this menopause and keep looking for answers.
We need to stick together safety in numbers so they say

Well there's just me and you plus 2 others I think that were affected by the oestrogen and both of them stopped any form of hrt because of it I think..I'm driven to find a solution t9 my delayed sleep onset problem and after trying EVERYTHING to cure it there's hrt but like you I expected to feel good on the oestrogen but dodgy on the progesterone not really ill on it..I will try  your patch if this gel utrogestan doesn't agree as I'd prefer a simple method and the dose if utrogestan nhs advise is notoriously horrid for adverse sude effects. I honestly think I'll end up divorced alone and more insane than I already am with zero friends and 50 cats hahaha..
Also like you said I thought the bad effects from oestrogen were maybe as I'm not lacking in it but you can't take progesterone on its own so what's the solution ???

Trust me to be different from everyone else lol and I am alone but only have 1 cat up to now  :catscratch:
I'm looking for answers and as I've got nowt better to do it helps pass the time maybe I'm awkward and do better on progesterone cos I'm on the phase 2 patch now and feel better than I did on oestrogen alone. I will get on the case and report back on any findings
Keep in touch
