Late Menopause Over 55
Machair:
Thank you Carol. I really feel for you with the racing heart and palpitations. I have this issue a lot as I have ME and it is one of the symptoms - I am sure if it starts with the menopause I am going to be in double trouble!
I think the period issues start when the regularly disappears. I was regular until 53/54 and many of my friends of a similar age were nearing the end of 4 years of irregular periods by then, and many were post by this age. Were you regular until your mid fifties too?
I expected to be all finished by 55 but I guess being regular until almost that age meant that was never going to happen!
I am so grateful to you for replying on this thread as there are less of us in this age category here.x
Bluebell:
Sorry to hear you have ME. That's a very debilitating illness.
I was pretty regular in my fifties. Year after year I kept thinking surely they'll stop soon. Friends were already post menopausal and I was still buying sanitary wear. 🤦🏼♀️
Unfortunately I hadn't heard of Menopause Matters at that time. Thank goodness I know about it now, it's so good when you have a problem to just check in and see if anyone else has had it and how they treated it. X
Machair:
Yes Carol that is exactly how I feel! All my friends have stopped years ago and I am still going! Thank goodness for this website forum and for wonderful people like yourself who make it all seem more normal!
I wish I could ask my Mum about her menopause, but she had a hysterectomy in her early forties including ovary removal- so hers was surgically induced, and I have no sisters.I think having a family can help as often experiences can be similar in terms of age of onset. I am keeping records to help my daughters when it is their turn!
Jemp:
I'm another who had a late menopause. I had my last period at about 57. I didn't realise this was unusual. I was a late starter though so I don't know if that is significant. It was only when I came on here for advice re frequent weeing that I realised that a lot of the things I had been experiencing such as depression and anxiety and bladder problems were due to menopause. I thought in my ignorance that having survived the hot flushes that I had got away with it! How wrong I was!
Machair:
Hi Jemp- so lovely to hear from you and welcome to this thread. it is so lovely to have a kindred spirit! Did your periods get lighter in the end. My last one was April but it was really light and only needed panty liners. No hot flushes yet. Are you a few years post now?
