We went at the end of June and had beautiful weather from start to finish.I agree about Freedom Dining - we always do this and have a table for two which suits us perfectly x

Someone I know (she's in her 70s) went with Fred Olson I think to see the northern lights last February. She loved it. No-one got sick on the cruise ship either!

I would agree with freedom dining as well as it is your first cruise. Please check out the new P&O ship, it looks amazing. There is still something so traditional about P&O, just small things, there is always silver service in the restaurants in the evening and every lunchtime there is always a curry for lunch (amongst lots of other things), a bit like the days of The Raj  :)

I have a friend whose mum and dad would never go abroad any other way. Her dad is a bit poorly off and on and the availability of medical treatment on board reassures him. He has never had to use it but just the thought that it's there and available is enough for him.

CLKD.....you can get an injection onboard to stop sea sickness or so I have been told....so no worries there.

Would anyone like me to dive into our recycling bin to retrieve last weeks' Cruise Tour info., before the bin goes 'out'?

I have just booked to go on the new P&O ship Britannia for a 7 day cruise in August from Southampton. I have chronic bladder/pelvic pain issues at the moment but I'm hoping it will be 'do-able' as it doesn't involve any flights or long journeys. Normally, I would be feeling so excited but I can't help feeling a bit nervous, I had to cancel a trip that I had booked to the South of France last year because of this wretched pelvic pain but I really don't want it to get the better of me!!

Just bumping this old thread.

We're thinking of visiting Norway this year but not sure the best way to do it. Hubby is all for flying and driving but I'm wondering whether the fjords are best accessed via a ship i.e. a cruise. However, we've always considered cruising our worst sort of nightmare not that either of us have ever experienced it!

We'd loathe the big glitzy shebang with singing and dancing entertainment etc but the mention of lectures and the informality of the smaller ships sounds more appealing. I've read some recommendations on this old thread can anyone add some up to date info or experiences?

Is there a best time to visit? I am seriously tasty to mosquitoes and midges and normally eaten alive, which is one of the reasons that puts me off the self managed wandering that my husband would prefer.

Thank you, all advice appreciated ladies! x

Hi Elizabeth Rose- flying and driving would be terribly expensive. I do believe that a cruise would be your best option. Not sure who's doing Norwegian Fjords? I've been cruising with P&O  ( very British ) Azamara (  American, smaller ships, more informal and very good but expensive although all inclusive ) Royal Caribbean and Princess ( big ships, very American, some drinks packages available on RCI - not a big fan of Princess although they were ok ) . My favourite is Celebrity ( RCI , Azamara are part of same group ) We've had some lovely holidays on Celebrity. If you're willing to spend a wee bit more and would like a balcony, try Aqua Class- you have unlimited access to the Persian Gardens ( spa suite ) and access to Blu which is a smaller restaurant serving lighter food. We always ask for a table for 2 as we are anti social but you can speak to the tables either side so it's up to you if you want to engage or not. We usually have room service breakfast and then toddle off to the coffee shop for a nice cappuccino before heading out , lolling in the adult solarium or reading a book on the balcony Sometimes we go to the shows, sometimes not. You can be as active or sociable as you want to be. I also like Celebrity as they operate an informal dress policy. I'm always smart for dinner but if I don't want to get the ballgown out, no one is going to be sniffy about it!

Depends what floats your boat but given the prices in that part of the world, you would be better off with a cruise. The crucial thing is to choose the right ship!

Have your tried Avon Skin so soft ( green bottle ) dry oil spray for the mossies.? Works on their tough cousins, the dreaded Scottish midges x

My first priority would be to make sure that I don't get a windowless cabin!  Did you watch Jane Macdonald recently ?   Small ships to 4 different locations.

The Telegraph have celebrate-led cruises, however, I know of one couple of went on one but the 'celebraty' appeared, did his talk, then went so no opportunity of Q&A sessions after.  They felt they was robbed  :D

Himself wants to see the Northern Lights and as we don't fly - but he thought that he would be bored on a cruise  ::)

CLKD- Celeb led cruises and Celebrity are different. Celebrity sits between the rather expensive Azamara brand and Royal Caribbean. It's really nice and I'm a fussy so and so. I can't afford Silver Seas and Crystal so it's a really nice compromise and the ships never feel too big or busy. I went P & O to the Caribbean a few years ago and thought it was Butlins by the sea. However, went on one of their smaller ships to the med and really enjoyed it. It all depends what you're looking for... I love cruises but for me the optimum time on board is around 10-12 days. Any less doesn't seem enough, any more I go stir crazy. Also went Transatlantic to New York on the Queen Mary. Really enjoyed it but it was quite stuffy and formal for my liking. Point is, there's a cruise line/ ship for everyone. Your hubby won't be bored. You can do as much or as little as you think. One of my friends husband was very anti cruise a few years back but she persuaded him. He raved about it and she came in from work one night after work to him watching the TV. The cruise channel. Now that is sad! BUT he booked his second cruise within days and now he says you can't beat them for quality, food, things to do etc etc. Thing is, you'll either love them or hate them but important thing is to find a line and ship and itinerary that suits. But there's a lot of choice out there! I've also done one river cruise and loved it but pretty full on so it's not the most relaxing! Go on girl, tell him you've booked one and watch him turn white!
