long term HRT

(1/1)

chrismonkhouse:
I had a total hysterectomy 34 years ago, and have been on Premarin ever since.  I am now 74, but don't either look it or feel it.  When I went to the chemist to collect my next prescription I was handed a note which said "Premarin stopped" - no explanation.  I am seeing the doctor about it, but cannot find ANY information on risks or benefits for those over 70.  I am hoping to persuade her to continue it.

I do not want to stop - I do not believe the risks are very great - and I do believe it's been really helpful to me.  Can anyone supply any data from trials for long term use?

Rowan:
So sorry to read that you found out your Premarin has been stopped in such an abrupt and rude manner! A lot of women do very well on Premarin well into their seventies.

Here is some comments from gransnet about other ladies on HRT or who have come off it, its interesting reading.

If you are well and healthy and want to continue Premarin I can't see why you cant continue with it.

I have read that some ladies come off Premarin and start bioidentical estrogen and don't do half so well. It could be a case of if its not broke then don't fix it !!!

Tell your GP that you want it to be your choice what you decide to do, not guidelines.

I found this  http://www.drugs.com/answers/support-group/premarin/blog/  there is a group you can join.

Thanks for this - I think my GP quite enjoys me going in and arguing about things!  We agreed I could continue if I wished - I said I'd go on lower strength (0.625 instead of 1.25), she gave me a print-out from Patient UK, I said I'd do some more research on trials and ages, so we'll see how it goes!

I was on thyroid until recently, which she wanted me to stop, but I'm not arguing with that unless I get symptoms again.
