Flooding & then cramps in Perimenopause
« on: January 24, 2017, 01:56:19 PM »

Hi, I wonder if anyone else has experienced similar symptoms please.

I am 50 years old who after regular periods had a 51 day cycle. I then had an extremely heavy period (3 days) and as the period lightened very bad cramping which is still continuing even though there is very little bleeding now.  I went to the GP yesterday who gave me antispasmodics but this has made very little difference when it was really bad yesterday.  It is not as painful as it was yesterday but is this the perimenopause??

Would love to hear you views.

Hi Stargazer :welcomemm:

It could be the start of peri...have a look through these symptoms and see if you recognise any of them.

My periods which were always quite light and rarely painful got heavier and more painful in peri.

Hi Stargazer,
I agree this sounds like hormones playing up or being in disbalance hence heavy bleed/cramps. I only begun to get cramps in peri as well, some days so awful that I couldn't get out of bed !
A few things I can recommend that worked for me:
-applying warm/hot pad on my belly would ease the cramping
- taking one nurophen at the start of the cramp
- taking regular magnesium supplements , throughout the month and not just before a period. Magnesuim relaxes the muscles and eases spasms of the uterus.

I would say if you still continue to have heavy bleeds and cramps to ask to be referred to a specialist.

I hope this is helpful

Thank you for your suggestions and ideas.

I have spoken to my GP today and have asked for a scan just to check everything is in order!!  Most probably is my peri starting but best to rule out uterine problems I guess.  I happen to be on leave from last Friday for a week or else I would have been off work this past 4 days.

Milamam can I ask when you started getting heavy bleeding/cramps was that the beginning of the end of this peri stage?  or could missing periods followed by heavy periods/pain go on for years?

I've had heavy periods for 2 plus years now, missed a few periods last year, going 3 months without one recently. Periods got closer together about 4 years ago, think I've a wee while to go yet though. Keep a diary so as you can track what's happening. Document I read said 'normal' for final period to be 1.5 - 2.3 years after going 90 days between periods, which marks late stage perimenopause.

Hi guys.
I'm new to all of this, I'm 50 yrs old, started over a year ago missing
The odd period, then march 2016 had a very heavy period which lasted 3weeks.
End of July 2016 was a regular period, then from then till the end of December nothing. I had the burning sensation, vaginal dryness and went to see the dr
He prescribed vagifem 10mg that was in october. Since using the vagifem I have felt ok again but since the end of Dec I have had 2 periods, my last 1 ended a week ago I continue to use vagifem but now only a week after finishing my last period have the sore breasts again as I have always had prior to the start of my period.
Has anyone experienced the same ?   😕

Hi Tinab,

Welcome to the forum!

Yes what you've described sounds very familiar. If it only started a year ago, you seem to have moved very quickly, having such lengthy gaps between bleeds. Saying that, we're all very different: no two women seem to experience peri in exactly the same way. Mine's a long one!

There are lots of threads on here regarding peri symptoms, have a browse through. If you have specific questions just start a new thread and you'll find that there is always someone around to advise and reassure. In fact if you introduce yourself on the new members thread, (use the start a new thread link in new members) you'll receive a welcome, you could also add any info or questions you may have.

All good wishes to you x
