Mammogram this afternoon
« on: October 25, 2016, 08:02:40 AM »

I'm having my Mammogram this afternoon my last one was over 3 years ago where I was referred by my dr it turned out I had a cyst in my breast and others under my right arm they weren't drained. I've felt them off and on over the 3 years but all is ok. Then I got the dreaded letter for this mammogram a couple of weeks ago I'm so panicky today but know I need to go I think it's because they will probs refer me to have a scan after I've heard they measure the size of the cysts to see if they've grown or not. I've just got over been tested for ovarian cancer they found a 10cm cyst in my ovary turned out it was a simple cyst it has since shrunk to 2 cm so I've been discharged and I'm not sure I feel ready for another round of waiting. 😞

Did you get told how long the result will be B4 it's sent to you?  My breast lump was found on palpation and not on film  ::).  I go along when called, it doesn't worry me.

Bambam45, I know it's easy to say but don't worry about breast cysts, they are nothing whatsoever to do with cancer, they are sacs of liquid that change in size sometimes, that's all.  This is a post I wrote recently:

"Regarding breast cysts, they are extremely common and women can have them for years without knowing about them and many didn't show up well on old fashioned mammogram equipment - some have only become easy to detect more recently with more modern ultrasound equipment.  I have had them in the past and always have an ultrasound straight after a mammogram and the specialist said that in his entire career, he has never seen a breast cyst turn into a malignancy.  He said there are benign breast lumps that can turn malignant but they are not breast cysts (they have another name which I can't remember) and as CLKD says, if lumps are at all suspicious, they should always be removed immediately."

Apparently up to 1 in 3 women between 30 and 50 have breast cysts.

I hope this reaches you before your appointment - while you are there, why not speak to someone about your concerns so that they can put your mind at rest.

Good luck!

Here is some information about breast cysts:
https://www.breastcancercare.org.uk/publications/benign-breast-conditions/breast-cysts-bcc73

I have had benign breast lumps - I had a fibroadenoma, as well as a galactocele (milk lump) - neither of which were removed. I had quite lumpy breasts and regularly got mastitis when breast-feeding as a consequence, I think. I also had a recall once because the results weren't clear. I've now had 4 mammograms (well 5 counting the recall) and  always attend when called.

I hope your mammogram went well this afternoon - and try not to worry! :)

Hi everyone thank you so much. It didn't hurt at all. She said the results where about 2-3 weeks. I asked about the cysts. She said they will compare my last mammogram and they will know if there's been a lot of change or not she also said cysts fill with fluid from time to time and that's what causes the soreness. So fingers crossed. I over heard the lady ahead of me. After taking one exray she was asked how long have you had that lump the lady replied about 1.5 years she was going to be referred straight away. I said a prayer for her bless I hope she's ok. Thank you all again what a wonderful forum filled with lovely ladies. 💖💖💖

If they do need to recall you, it may well be quicker than 2 to 3 weeks. I was contacted after about 6 days.

Fingers crossed for you.   I can sympathise with the worrying.   My husband says he wishes I worried about the credit card bill as much as I do about my 'imaginary' illnesses!
