Think my Gyno is an idiot - RANT!!!
« on: August 25, 2016, 07:21:38 AM »

Ok, so I had my appointment today, first one with Gyno.

Think he is an idiot. He has been our towns Gyno for over 20 years, so thought he would be good - HE IS NOT!

Firstly went to my appointment, got there 10 minutes early, to be told "oh he isn't here yet and there is a few before you....ok...so I wait and wait, another lady turns up and we both wait....and wait....I ask her what time was her appointment, only for her to tell me the exact time that my appointment was - apparently they booked 3 of us for the same time. He only comes here once a fortnight and is meant to get here at 2 pm.

55 minutes AFTER my appointment he finally turns up...eventually 1 hour and 20 minutes AFTER my appointment I finally get in.

No apology or any thing.

Asked my age - 42 "oh you look so much younger"....well that was good, gave me a boost before it all went to crap.

Gave me a hard time due to the fact i only have one child - well excuse me for having a sick child and not wanting any more kids, especially since my daughters father left us due to her being ill and not being a boy.

Asked why I was there, "extremely heavy periods, regular dr was concerned about 4 mm endometrial stripe and perimenapuse queries"

He asked me to "define heavy" in a stuck up tone, like I couldn't tell the difference between light and heavy - I answered "Changing 1 super tampon every hour" to which he replies, in that voice again "oh ok, I won't need to ask you any more questions" and he didn't  >:(

Well he stated - heavy periods will be fixed with tranexamic acid that was prescribed by regular doctor, 4 mm stripe is nothing and was just because I had just had my withdrawal bleed from b/c the week before, as for perimenopausal queries, tried to tell him of my symptoms - when I could get a word in - his response "bull crap, you are too young for that" and he blamed ALL my symptoms on b/c.

Told me

**** To stay on Tranexamic acid at period time for heavy bleeding.
**** Go off b/c, as I have no need for it.
**** Go off iron tablets and get an iron transfusion due to low iron and hemoaglobin levels - that ain't gonna happen. I am right with my tablets and fell better since I started taking them. I don't need an "instant iron fix".

**** Go back and see him in 3 months and he will fit a  Mirena IUD - again that AIN'T gonna happen - heard too many horro stories there.

10 minutes (if that) after I went in, it was all over.

He is the only Gyno for about 250 km.

Do I really need one? I mean if this is really perimenopause, is it a must to have one?

All I want to do now is cry, I feel so useless and I have no idea what to do. I don't feel I got any answeres at all.

I hate small towns, god I hate being a woman!!!

Sorry for the rant.

You're certainly not too young. What an idiot.

Definitely not to young , just do your research and show him the evidence.

Our hormones fall off a cliff form 35 onwards , most of us don't notice but by your age you are well on the peri merry go round.

If I knew then what I know now , I am sure my vaginal strop would never have got so bad. 😡😡😡

You shouldn't have corrected it, Maryjane - there was I thinking what a BRILLIANT description 'vaginal strop' was!

Strop: a bad mood, especially one in which a person will not do as they are asked and is unpleasant to other people:

From now on, I don't have vaginal atrophy - instead, my vagina is having a strop  ;D

Sending huge hugs to you Aussiewoman42.

Not surprised you needed to rant.  Your gyno is a chump who doesn't know what he is talking about.  If 42 is too young for peri, ask him why there is a charity (Daisy Network) set up specifically to help women who are menopausal pre-40!!!  And it is absolutely NONE of his business how many kids you have!  Grrrrrrr!!!

What symptoms do you have?  Is there any way you can get what you need via your doctor or does it have to be a gyno?   I'm on the birth control pill for early meno (I'm 41, started at 35 but couldn't get a diagnosis till 39) and it has worked well for me, but sounds like it isn't helping you.  What bc are you taking?

You do need some form of hormone replacement at your age to protect against long-term health problems.  Keep an eye out for the early signs of VA too, as you may need some local treatment to deal with that too.  If you are able to get a prescription from your regular doctor (who sounds more switched on about peri than the gyno does, to be honest!) then you have no need to see a gyno.  I've found some of the 'specialists' can be worse than useless - when I first had symptoms, I went to see a doc specialising in women's health who told me I was 'normal' and didn't need any treatment.  By the time I found an ordinary GP who would listen, my VA was really bad - she admits she doesn't know much about menopause, but is willing to listen and to look for answers, and I've had much more help from her than from the 'experts'!

Rant away!

I realise you have read some negative things about the Mirena but it is a really good choice to control and often stop heavy bleeding. I have friends who are using it and they find it brilliant so it may be worth trying it? You could always have it removed again if it doesn't suit you.

Ask your doc about HRT options - it is more necessary for younger women and there is no increased risk at your age, since you would merely be replacing what your body would normally be producing by itself.  It may be worth trying Mirena, but make yourself aware of the various options available so you will be in a better place to make an informed decision next time you see your doctor.

OK so the Gynae ain't worried so back to your GP and discuss.  Have a look-see at the UK Daisy web-site so that you have info to discuss with your Doctor.

Some ladies find that B/C (Birth Control Pill?) helpful.  Some use the Mirena with success, it can be removed if necessary so it ain't the B all and End all [whatever that means  ::)].

Keeping a mood/food/symptom diary might be useful too.

What 'experts' don't realise is that rarely a girl can have 1 period and no more  :'(  :-\ and other girls can start menopause 'earlier' than expected.  I think that the 'mean' age is 55 but I was younger.  What bothers me is that so many 'experts' simply do NOT listen to what they are being told  :cuss:

Sorry you have had such a negative experience.  This medic sounds very arrogant to me.

I have never seen a gynae about any of my menopause from start to finish as my GP has been sufficient, along wth this forum so I don't think you have to see one.

You don't really have to see a gyne, my gp is handling everything much better than my small town gyne group was. However, I would be slightly concerned about the 4mm endometrium, if that's why you were referred to the gyne to begin with. I just have a hard time trusting his opinion since he blew off every single question you presented. Perhaps schedule another appointment with your gp and see if you can get further information on what concerns, tests, and possible actions relate to thickened endometrium. Or have you asked on here about other women's experiences? I don't even know what is a normal or acceptable measurement. Aside from when I had to have biopsy and ultrasound because of bleeding issues, which I went to the gyne for, I am sticking with my gp. I pray I never have issues that require me to go back to the gyne office.

Hello Aussiewoman42

I agree with the other ladies and I'm sorry to see that you've had such a frustrating experience.

I thought I would add that I am post menopause and when I had a scan a year ago I was told that a thickening of 4mm or less was okay. My lining was slightly above this so I had a hysteroscopy and all was fine.

Hope this helps you and wishing you well.
